After getting cancelled with bluesky studios closing and getting revived by Annapurna and distributed by Netflix, I was able to see the highly anticipated Nimona early. Does it shapeshift the game? Watch and find out. #nimona #netflix #nimonamovie

I *really* liked it. There are actually some pretty substantial changes from the graphic novel but they all felt like they served the story well and more specifically served the movie format. Despite the changes this is the best adaptation of a story I've seen in a while. It kept the spirit of the book while elaborating on it's themes and making it all fit together in a much more focused way. Also glad Nimona still got to be her dark, fanged self without getting sanitized too much.

Really did need to be a good bit longer. A Mini-series would have been perfect for this as it would have given it the time it needed for the relationships to be shown and built. Would have also loved to have seen more of the world inside, and out, of the city.

@dagazrune6453
@dagazrune6453 Жыл бұрын
The fact that the story has LGBT characters in it is not why Disney dropped it. They have made it very clear that they intend to cram LGBT propaganda into any and everything they can. They ham-fisted it into the Willow series, they placed a token character in Elemental and Light Beer.. I mean Light Year, and Disney has no issue with virtue signaling unless it is in a country that matters like those in the Middle East, Central Europe or China. Thankfully Disney did drop this because in Disney's hands with the current crop of propagandist they have cranking out scripts they would not have done this story justice. Ballister and Goldenloin would have just become Gay stereotypes with their sexuality being their only defining characteristic or worse their relationship would have been greatly diminished and passed on to a secondary character. The subtilty of the story / messages regarding the acceptance of people's differences, not trusting everything your Government or the Mainstream Media say, and embracing your personal uniqueness would have all been lost. Instead Disney would've just shoved in propaganda telling us what to believe and how to believe it. This will be a film we own in physical form and I will enjoy watching with my kids multiple times.

@dagazrune6453
@dagazrune6453 Жыл бұрын
@@mr.icannot5641 Well... my first point would be that Nimona is not a children's movie. Just because it is an animated film doesn't mean it is for children. I would say that Nimona is at best for Tweens (10 year olds +). My daughter for reference is a 13-yr-old. Now my 4-yr-old did watch some of it with us because it wasn't his bed time yet but it didn't hold his attention as much as Paw Patrol so he was in and out of the living room. In both cases I was not concerned because unlike films like Strange World the LGBT characters in Nimona weren't LGBT characters. They were two kick butt Knights that had goals, drive, and personality. Being gay was just one aspect of their personality. They weren't dressed in stereotypical "LGBT" clothes, styles, they didn't speak like stereotypical "LGBT" folks. In short they were actual characters that you could not simply describe as "Gay". Look at the "Gender Fluid" throw away character from Elemental. It was a waste and a stereotype clearly put in the film for propaganda. Name one motivation of that character other than Gay.... you can't because being Gender Fluid is all that character is. The same could be said of Kit from the Willow Series. Kit was just Lesbian GirlBoss. That was all to her. A very hallow waste of a role

One very specific change that I really appreciated (not really a spoiler, since it's backstory) was eliminating the backstory of Ambrosius and Ballister growing up together in an orphanage (as affecting as some details of that story were). I thought ND later found a way to make that idea work much better (Catra and Adora), and this story benefitted from dropping that and deciding instead that they came from very different worlds.

This might be a spoiler I like how we don’t get to know Nimonas origin or how old she actually is. From the flashback we know she’s at least 1000 years old. But then the question is, was what she said on the train true, or was that just what she heard from other people. Is her human forms just like her other forms. Is that giant form more like her original form. It’s a giant shining bright light covered in darkness. But it’s not important what she is, because we know who, she is.
@dagazrune6453
@dagazrune6453 Жыл бұрын
Very well stated. "... it's not important what she is, because we know who she is." That kind of subtlety is lacking in many of today's films. The message is never told to you but if you pay attention it is one of the many positive messages this film has.

Nimona is a love story to identity and finding yourself in a world that does not see you in it. As a trans and a nonbinary person, this animation hits very close to home to me. The amount of times of Nimona arguing against being seeing as "just a girl" feels similar. Her shapeshifting is a clear allegory for gender non conforming behavior, and the amount of times she correct Bal on what she was "I'm nimona." "Im not a people." etc etc when he asked her to just be a girl. Of course, Bal and dealing with the classism of his world is a big thing, the institute that betrayed him was what originally betrayed Nimona bc her best friend and ultimate betrayer was the idol citizens looked up to, and I think that's a poignant part not really discussed .

I love how they animated Nimona subtly differently to everyone else. Whilst still stylised the human characters are grounded aside from the occasional squash-and-stretch or emphasis scene. And generally they don't do anything particularly superhuman. Nimona, by contrast, practically throws herself around like a cartoon character with a grin that splits her whole face in two. Emphasises how much of a chaos gremlin she is, and I love it.

Absolutelly LOVED THIS FILM, been a huge fan of ND Stevenson since She-Ra and despite never read the original graphic novel (I look a few chapters before but never finishing will have to go and buy the thing later XD), but since I heard they wanted to make an adaptation, really was exited to see it, but then...DISNEY HAPPEN.....so happy that despite Netflix many...many..many scrubs ups, they still support animation (not forgiving them for Inside Job...still mad about that one), so glad they saved this one, I adore Nimona and this story is another example that is not the diversity, or representation that bomb stuff, is bad stories....this have literally everything some other bad writers will HAMMER hard and preachy in a very in you face way....Just like with She-Ra Noelle or ND now, the the talented people behind this movie, showcase that is not the ISSUE, as long you can tell a good story with good characters that are memorable and likable, I just watch it and want to see it again.....and man the moments that HIT, hit hard in this film...........also I wasn't excepting to be this FUNNY, I was laughing hard at many jokes and situations, but as well felt all the heartbreaking moments, again I need to salute Stevenson, they absolutely know how to write a GOOD STORY and use diversity without FORCING IT like Disney does.....also just another L for Disney this year and another W for animation............damn this been a GOOD YEAR for animation fans, we are eating goooood!

Its great as what it is and nothing feels rushed, but SO MUCH happens and it could have hit harder then it already does if it was in a show format and took more times to build things up, especially when you consider they squeezed a whole comic into one movie. Gorgeous animation, REALLY REALLY good plot, i loved all the characters i was supposed to love and hated all the characters i was supposed to hate and I really connected with the message and the themes. 8.5/10 for me, its great to see queer stories that are undeniably lgbtq without being lgbtq being the center of the story.

I absolutely loved this movie 10/10 but yah could have used a bit more time and I would have liked to see more of the conflict between Glorith and Nimona, it’s hard to believe that Nimona would attack on purpose so aside from that one accident I want to see how she became known as this terrible monster. And how her once friend Glorith fought her.

I really recommend reading the graphic novel, the movie unfortunately is not faithful at all to the original story and makes the story way less complex. I still like it! And its wonderful to see it finally complete, but it is generally weaker then the comic when it comes to the themes and story.

@@kwayneboy1524 okay so I just finished re-reading the comic to better construct my thoughts and they have slightly changed. But here is the basics: The movie is a more simplified and refined version of the story while the comic is a more ambitious but not that well executed story. I basically remembered the novel as better than it actually was so now I have a better grasp on my feelings and a greater liking for the movie. With that said here’s my main problem with the movie: Just so you get an idea of how different the two are, a queen doesn’t exist in the comic. The way Bal lost his arm is completely different, in the book young Ballister and Ambrosious are going to compete in a joust to become the champion of the institute, Bal wins but as Ambrosious falls of his horse his lance shoots at Ballister and he looses his arm. After that the institute leaves him in the streets because “they have no use for a one armed knight”. This change sevearly changes the entiere course of the story, in the movie he’s trying to prove his innocence, while in the comic he’s trying to prove the corrupt nature of the institute. He doesn’t need Nimona to tell him that, because he’s been trying to do that all along, overthrow the government. His relationship with Ambrosious changes as well to a more “friends to enemies to lovers” trope in which Blackheart is resentful towards ambrosious for blowing his arm off, while he keeps insisting that it was an accident (I won’t tell what truly happened cuse that’s a pretty big spoiler). Here’s the kicker though, with the director framing ballister in the movie and then being proven wrong pretty easily, it makes the story weaker. Nimona was about overthrowing a government and proving the corruption that goes through a system that manipulates their people and keeps them ignorant, but in the movie when the director is found out, no one agrees with her morals. The guards aren’t on her side, the people are not on her side, ambrosious is not on her side, shit not even the queen, the actual government was on her side. Which implies that no. The system is not the problem, its just her, she’s just one bad apple, which ruins the entire message and makes the story way less complex. Here is the thing, I think the writers didn’t notice thats what they did when they changed the story, because there is a scene where Nimona is talking about how “the problem isint just the director, its the entire system!” Which completely contradicts what actually happens in the movie, and how no one shared the director’s vision of peace. This doesn’t happen just once, there are tons of scenes in the movie that try to mirror scenes in the comic but with this changed context it lends them completely flat. For example the scene where goldenloin asks Bal to meet up in the bar happens way earlier in the comic and ambrosious is not talking to Bal about how “Nimona is evil and cruel and that they need to kill her”, he had just been asked to from the director to kill Nimona and is warning Ballister to please send her away so she is not harmed. The entire betrayal plot that they have in the third act of the movie doesn’t work at all because of this decision, but Im not going to get into that because Nimona’s backstory is a whole different beast (hehe). Just to paint a picture of how much it was changed and toned down, Gloreth doesn’t exist in the original comic, neither does the wall, thats why the concepts seem so half baked and rushed in the movie. Anyways sorry for all of that, in the end the comic isint perfect, the pasing struggles from it being a webcomic that was being written on the go, the lack of exploration of themes it tries to set up and the general unrefinement of the narrative because of said status as a wedcomic. I think the movie does some great things! The character designs are upgraded, characterization is way more compelling and likable, themes of queerness and gender identity are way more prominent and well thought out. Even with all of that, I definetely recommend reading the comic for yourself and coming up with your own conclusion, I got a lot of room for thought through the re-read and thought about my own ways of how I would adapt the story. I want to make a full review video on the movie, maybe I will, maybe I won’t, but i got a lot to talk about.
