I love the symbolism in this film. The representation of class divide, and how the 1% rule the masses. That on top of Nimona’s character being written to be a trans allegory and a presentation of the affects of prejudice and discrimination. It’s all handled so sensitively and doesn’t feel corporate in the slightest. Also, the character designs are so lively and work amazingly well with the cel shading. This movie is such a treat.

To elaborate, there are so many points in this movie that I as a trans person have definitely heard or seen said about trans people. Asking invasive, small-minded questions, "Why can't you just be you, be a girl?", "Isn't it just easier for you to be a girl?" "Easier for who?", Nimona explaining how if she never shape-shifts she'd feel like she wasn't really "living", even her saying "The world wants to drive a sword through my heart, sometimes I wanna let them" feels so reflective of the high transgender youth suicide rate. It's 74 percent of us. The creator himself is transgender too, so this feels so reflective of that.

I think this movie is the closest that we've ever seen a character talk/ attempt their suicide for a reason that people can relate to that is meant for children. We have movies where a character will sacrifice themselves in order to save whatever they need to but I can't really think of a kids movie where the characters talk about that or we are shown that (When I say kids I mean it was marketed for them, not like the blockbuster action movies out there that play on the nostalgia of the adult audience.)

As a genderfluid person Nimona is great representation the conversation of how it feels to shape shift and how it feels when she doesn’t is very accurate & the joy of messing with peoples outdated preconceptions of how she should act instead of just being Nimona is also accurate. I hadn't thought of how Ballister got that arm before. In the webcomic, he was an established villain for a few years before Nimona showed up and he wasn't wanted for regicide, though losing the arm is when he got kicked out of the knights and at one point he tried to clone the King's daughter. There he was the designated villain the Institute kept around because they needed an enemy.

Nope, we wouldn´t. Before they dropped the project, they demanded a few changes in the screenplay, mainly the removal of the kiss at the end and also the scene after Bal and Ambrosius had the argument in the bar, when Bal says: "Why can´t you just leave me alone!" and Ambrosius replies: "Because I love you." Yep, the I love you was too much for Disney. :-D Also, I love that, in comparison to other "gay" stories, those two aren´t teenagers on their first crush and discovering that they are gay, or something like that, but adults who already have relationship they are comfortable with (before it gets... complicated, with, ya know, Ballister being framed for killing the queen and Ambrosius having to, in his position as a knight, bring him to justice).

As someone who read the source material, I'll say that the movie is very much different from the comics in execution. The ending, especially, is very different. While Nimona lives, it's even more subtle than this movie made it out to be. They also never really established Nimona as a creature that's lived forever like they do. However, with this, they've set themselves up for a possible movie sequel or even a show sequel to elaborate on the lore. Honestly, I'd love that and to see Nimona settle into living amongst actual people for a change, maybe even become a knight like Bal and Goldenloin. Maybe she goes from being Bal's sidekick to his squire. It would be interesting. Anything if it means I could get an adaptation of the Christmas comic I saw at the back of the book. 🤣🤣 I will say, I don't care for LGBT media at all but you're definitely right about how it's usually executed. When a movie is LGBT, it's made the whole personality of the characters and the show. Unfortunately, that's a reflection of most young LGBT people today. When I was in high school, anyone who lined themselves up with LGBT made it their whole personality. Maybe that's the reflection of the movies, or maybe the movies are a reflection of the young people's actions today. The comic itself, while never having a gay kiss or anything, is the same where if it's there, it isn't in your face. I like it when it's done like this. While I prefer straight ships, I don't hate what the two men have and the movie itself is great. Granted, the LGBT add in does feel a little more check-boxy to me. The way Goldenloin acts towards Bal, I'd act if I had been betrayed by my best friend. It's like a McGuffin. You could change the two out to be the bestest of friends and I'd get the same feeling I'd get when watching the two of them now. It just feels like they checked off the box for gay representation just because they had to put it in somewhere. It could be switched out for a platonic relationship between two best friends and I wouldn't know the difference. Maybe that's what makes the addition feel as okay to me as it does? I dunno. Overall, the movie's amazing. 10/10, would watch again. Extra points for Chloe Grace Moretz. She is just AMAZING!

Subtle? She literally checks on Ballister in disguise as the doctor, and when Ballister figures it out (she draw a shark in his hospital card) and runs after her, she literaly waves at him.
@wordsmith6154
@wordsmith6154 Жыл бұрын
@veronikamajerova4564 I don't remember her waving, but I remember she was the nurse, drew the shark and left. She didn't come back in Bal's life like she does at the end of the movie. She doesn't say anything indicating that she's back. They never really come out and say it. It's implied with that scene at the end.

I have many praises for this movie but I have one negative opinion. Obviously there will be spoilers way further down this comment so please be warned. I’ll say the negative thing first then I’ll do the positive things. With how overly used having a gay relationship is used in movies and films it always feels like it’s a checklist that they have to have such and such in a movie or film. I’d gladly accept it if it wasn’t so overused in every form as overusing any troupe/cliche gets extremely old extremely fast and this can be applied for anything. Now that everyone has collectively given up reading or properly given this a dislike and tries to rip me from shreds I’ll move on to what I love about this film for those of you who actually did fully read this message. I loved the visuals of the movie the colors worked well to tell the story and especially with Namona I’ll touch in that a little later but everything felt natural and even with it being animated it felt like the animators and writers truly put a lot of love and care into making it. I also loved how conversational things went to parrot what Smarty Pants said it truly felt natural and just full of life. They also made the twist villain actually a surprise and kept it hidden and even after the reveal they still made it feel unlikely. I also thoroughly enjoyed the writing so much of it was used to reflect certain aspects of the story so beautifully. This leads me to a part that truly hit me hard was how it talked about serious mental issues. The cut to Goldloin having an internal freak out being played out and when it shoots to him saying I’m fine or nothing. I love how even if you didn’t catch that you can tell by the look on his face how much he’s suffering. Then Namona’s line “I don’t know what hurts worse people wanting to stab me through the heart or how badly I want to stab myself” (I tried to quote it best I could) really hits hard at leasts when you go through depression you know how hard that line hits. (Once again I’ll cover that extremely soon). I loved the conversation when they discussed her feelings when she transformed how if she holds back she doesn’t feel free and the opposite when she does. I’ll now cover art and storytelling part I brushed off earlier rewatch the movie and notice every time she transforms how she’s always in bright color red. Red is a strong color often used for anger but it’s also a color of love. Namona is a rebel someone full of anger but she loves her friends and wants nothing more to be free and be loved. Now we go back to Namona and her suffering notice how her monster transformation into the dark beast was from her holding back those negative thoughts and emotions and she turned into a BLACK shadow monster and pushed forward so she could finally “push the sword through her own heart” THAT is exactly how going through that kind of darkness feels. How it ended with her friend seeing her as who she is broke me to tears. If you go the very end of credits it has a hotline for people going through hard mental issues. I still am crying over it now as great writing great visuals and great message and I hope we get more movies like this. I deeply appreciate everyone who took time to read this and didn’t immediately to start hating me for having one negative view. I honestly have nothing against that community I just want movies to feel like movies with no “checklist” things added. Have a wonderful day.

It was alright? Nothing particularly noteworthy. If anything i really disliked Nimona for the majority of the film, at least until the end when she actually displayed some emotional depth other then annoying Teenager with ADD. Bal was by far the better character. But this story has been told before, Wreck-it Ralph for instance also has a character whose stuck with the Villain Role and is tired of never being seen as anything but a monster. hmm. He had a small and slightly less annoying chick side-kick too...

the big flaw to it was indeed Nimona like we sefe her too soon, not enough on the main boy before that, a lot was cut apparently from the actual source material so the entire class story is undervalued and even the Nimona judge book by its cover doesn't work when she is purposefully chaotic leading to bad impression and by her very nature is dangerous (changeling with no real limit)

@@marcusclark1339 I mean, Nimona is changeling (or, I think, shapeshifter is the better term), but the people there have literal lasers and other powerful weapons.

I don't like Mary Sues, predicted all of the plot, didn't had fun until half of the movie when I realized her inmense power and a character that powerful had to be a Mary Sue. Can't feel bad for Nimona after all the damage she caused. Completely justified because her backstory is sad? Girl could use some empathy. Bad guy sucked. Loved all of the knights tho they all ruled! Very cool armors and designs.

Not the best movie of the year, not in top 5 even, would give it a 7/10 was a fine movie but just found the important plot beats not focused on enough.

The Movie was cute and funny and just really fun all round, also had a really inspired fresh soundtrack to. It’s very close to in animation and feelings to Netflix’s show (LOL Arcane) series (witch I’m eagerly awaiting a new season of !!👏) and Nimona was definitely my favorite character of the film! 🫶 there were some wholes in the story but it was good! Ps: @SmartyPants “you are very funny” 😄👍
