This is some pretty cool stuff! In terms of helping people understand the uniqueness of the hand physics, it might be helpful if you showed some side-by-side footage of the "wobbly" behavior you describe seeing in other games. Also, a few things I'm curious about: - Does the feet pushing against the ground actually drive the character forward, or is there still a "magical" force propelling the torso? - Have you looked into making the characters strength vary based on stamina? For example, muscles tend to fatigue after exerting force for an extended period. I'm sure you could reference some actual biomechanical research to implement that kind of thing realistically. - Are the spine and hips infinitely strong? And do you plan on making their strength more realistic? For example, when crawling over a ledge, i doubt someone hold themselves in a planking position like you show in the video.
@zev413311 ай бұрын
I feel like giving muscles stamina would be cool but at the same time worsen user experience. We already have limits like how long we could hold our arms out. Adding another virtual stamina limitation in a game could (in my opinion) end up quite annoying, especially if it doesn't line up with actual IRL stamina levels.
@MyEarsHurts10 ай бұрын
to be honest it does kinda look like its a magical force while having the character still technically be a ragdoll

This should be implemented in all VR games! The way your VR arms match your real life limits is amazing, the movement of shoulders looks very realistic and natural, I love it! And the physics affecting your virtual body is so good. Seriously, this should be the default engine for all VR apps.

I would like to see a bit more info on the performance impact and CPU usage. Especially in something like a multiplayer context where you have to simulate dozens of the same rig and either have the local machine simulate all of them, or network all of their movements, this is extremely promising though.

@sams_salad_service365311 ай бұрын
I'm very excited to see how this continues to advance, you are doing great and innovative work for the VR space. I would like to point out that the heavy ball made me think about the idea of a strength system based on legs and core as well as arms, where you can't pick up the ball straight from the ground with your arms while standing, but if you crouch and hull it up over your legs as you stand back up then you might have the strength to pick it up. Similar to what strongmen do when lifting atlas stones. I'm sure this is a very complicated idea to implement but I thought I would voice it anyway, could be very cool in the future.

I love how the legs work here though it still looks like theyre working independently from the top half of the body, i think adding like slight leaning to the walk/running would add a bit more of a natural look to walking and running. With the top half being stiff straight when running looks a tiiiny bit off
@duckling811 ай бұрын
It's not like the stiffness is that noticeable unless you're watching the third person view. I also think it would be immersion breaking to have your in-game body in a completely different position from your irl one because bonelab did that when climbing and it messed me up so many times. I thought I made it up and over something when in reality, only my head made it up and I would fall.
@NimsoStudios11 ай бұрын
There is a slight lean on the body. It's not currently strong enough to match the feet because I want to get all my gameplay interactions in first before making the body move a little bit too much in standard movement. Also the velocity of the hip and spine is affected by that meaning the calculations feedback on themselves increasing the chance of glitches.
@coltynstone-lamontagne11 ай бұрын
@duckling8 yeah the disconnect is more immersion breaking than running with an upright torso which I actually do all the time irl because you need an upright torso when running in icy environments

@Kyuschi11 ай бұрын
This is progressing very well and giving me a lot of hope for future vr gaming. One thing i noticed you might want to look into as you're readjusting the hip movement stiffness is how people lean towards the direction they're moving. From a physics perspective what you're actually doin when you're walking is falling forwards and repeatedly catching yourself with your feet, so it's slightly odd in the simulation where everything above the hips seems to be staying completely upright while you're moving. Regardless, excited to see what comes next here
@PajamaMan_11 ай бұрын
This is all so fascinating! I'm so glad that you allow us to see the progress as you develop your project, and it's awesome that you managed to find an audience. I find it surprising that this sort of attention to detail about VR controls and representations seems to have never been done before (or at least fully implemented). Is there a reason for that? Is VR tech just that new? Is it too intense computationally to combine with many other systems in a full game?
@WowLookatThat-xu5eb11 ай бұрын
You've done some incredible work! The legs and feet look very lifelike and realistic. Thanks for acknowledging the point about full-body tracking, I've always thought it's a mistake to gloss over technical problems by saying, "We just need more powerful hardware." VR needs more people like you who pull out the full potential of the hardware, which I think is honestly 30% what it could be on average. Keep up the good work!
@whwhwhhwhhhwhdldkjdsnsjsks654411 ай бұрын
Something interesting would be the ability to contextually switch between leg tracking and, not. So for example if the player was standing still they’d be able to perform a kick, as there isn’t anything else the leg needs to be doing right now for consistency

one thing that FBT, specifically traking feet, would be able to bring is kicking. Being able to kick something, being an object or an enemy would be cool, specially seeing how the physics would interact with the forces being applied back into your body while doing it, of course, you can implement a "kick" button too, but I always imagine that kicking irl gives more good brain chemicals lol. This is really awesome! You're approaching VR procedural physics in the best way possible! Bone Works/Lab and Half Life Alyx are the best I've seen and you're right up there with them pushing the boundaries of what's possible and comfortable in VR. In my opinion it's worth considering hip tracking not for direct positional tracking or visual aesthetic but for rotational tracking of the legs and lower body motion. It would open up the ability to move your head independent of your body while moving in the direction of your hip orientation. It's more natural for gameplay to be able to look in one direction while moving in a different direction while still having total control of your hands. Awesome work and always! I look forward to seeing where else you go with this! What's next? Changes in gravity? Scale? Super Strength? I'm here for it.

jumping into the water looks a little odd because when you jump into water in real life you’re usually planning on landing in water before you even jump. in this case though you don’t know where the player wants to be until they’re there. the best solution i could think of is to, when in air, check the distance and material of the ground below the player, and then whenever the player is above a barrier between two surfaces, shift the player as if they’re aiming for one of them. i think the best way to choose a surface is whichever would “hurt” the least (maybe prioritise the closest landing point up until a certain distance and then choose the “softer” material (water)) youre the one who designs procedural movement though so i’m sure you could think of a more clever, generalised way to fix the diving problem

You're right about your entire arm moving when swinging around heavy objects. but I think the problem with that in VR is there is a momentary disconnect between where your real arm is and where your virtual arm is. which can be very uncomfortable for people. I think ideally for the best comfort and most immersive feeling, your virtual arm should be a perfect 1:1 with your real arm, even if its not exactly realistic to how your body would behave when moving around heavy objects. And I believe that's exactly why VR developers opt to make the object itself have inertia but NOT your arms.

It looks amazing!! Just the hips looks a little stiff, like the upper body looks too vertical when moving, i wonder if you can have them lag a bit behind the movement or something doe have a bit directionality to the body leaning when moving? Probably very hard to make look natural... Or maybe before moving the leg, first only the shoulders would move, so with small movements the hips stay in place, and then when you walk they lag a bit behind, having them lean... That would also get rid of the micro movements with the legs when you're just standing still.
