Obviously not the greatest interpretation of the Irving Berlin standard, but understandable. The documentary What Happened Ms. Simone? revealed Nina had been taking rather strong antipsychotic medication for several years by 1990 which ultimately affected both her piano playing and (singing) voice.

Obviously she doesn't give a crap about this song. Nina sung songs with a meaning. She doesn't seem to be in the mood for this message. Probably some annoying request by a wealthy fan.

+Scott Sheffield She's an amazing artist and performer, and at that point she'd already done an immeasurable service to music in general....to point out a great artist's supposed vices does little for your opinions or criticisms..."champage and/or cocaine'? what do you know about it?
@elan1911738 жыл бұрын
She absolutely was a brilliant artist, and I admire her very much. It just tickled me that the way she is almost angrily pounding and shouting out this song stands in comical contrast to its contents. As for the unfortunate champagne/cocaine comment - that was a reference to a documentary I saw about her where someone who had worked with her told a story about asking her, in her dressing room, if there was anything she needed. She replied, "I want some champagne, some cocaine, and some sausages!" I thought that was such a hilariously specific request that it stuck in my head.

Yea good Nina sounds bored here. She's such a great artist but I wonder what she was thinking...
@vangovroomhonk7 ай бұрын
This was during a period where she was extremely medicated for depression as well as bipolar disorder with mania. She had suffered from multiple record labels taking advantage of her and then literally tossing her in the street (she was homeless for many years after her initial rise to fame) so the Nina you're seeing here is a Nina that was destroyed and then put back together. Sometimes when that happens we lose bits of who we are
@petrapacaric7 ай бұрын
Thanks for your reply. Heartbreaking. I didn’t know - must have been tough for her to be onstage in that state. She was a jewel of an artist.

Man what happened? The band is working hard to keep things together but this interpretation is weird, she is out of sync, false notes, she seems drugged.
@CRex8 жыл бұрын
She'd been taking a lot of antipsychotic medicine by this stage and it affected her singing voice and piano playing. I also think she smoked too so that obviously affected her voice somewhat.
@BuckyBrown-lt4ry4 жыл бұрын
TERRIBLE rendition of this song. No emotion, too fast, completely bland. Is this how she sings all of her songs? Terrible!!
@karlakay4 жыл бұрын
Not how she sings all her songs, at all. Agree this one is terrible. My favorite is I want a Little Sugar in my bowl. And of course her rendition of Its a New Day ( or world).... I'm Feeling Good! Best song - played every morning at the Space station.

How to crucify a beautiful song without emotion and spirit in which it was written, sounds awful! An example of someone tired of their profession!
@damusicbag8 жыл бұрын
+CSMedia I get what you're saying, but Nina was taking a lot of powerful medication during this period which greatly affected her singing and playing skills - just look at her performances from the early 80s (when she first started taking the medication) and compare them to this performance.
@CarlyWaarly8 жыл бұрын
No worries, she was a class singer!

Obviously you don't know Nina Simone. Just watch her live version of Someone To Watch Over Me in Montreux and cry like a baby. That's a reference, clearly not this song.
