Best advice ever. I recently started playing keyless flutes and tin whistles so that I could sit in at Irish music sessions. But after hearing Nina Perlove play, I'm thinking of expanding my musical goals to include beohm flutes, and the music that goes along with it, as well.

Wow! Thank you! I finally found my problem! I was trying to play this particular phrase in Les Miserables, and kept having to breathe 2 or 3 times (It was bad.). I've been trying for days to pack my lungs with air. Then I just took your advice and nailed it in one shot! :) P.S. Haha, nice "cup" 1:29.

OH MY GOSH. Nina, you are a genius. Thank you so much for sharing...i'm now working on the Tchaikovsky Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture...and there are about 6-8 measures in the beginning where I felt my air not going through....and this method is GENIUS. Hopefully practicing this method will allow me to play principal :D

Nina, do you think this breathing exercise would help? Take a long relaxed breath in. Say "sssss" and time yourself on the exhale. Maybe you can even add dynamics to the "sssss". Try to beat your time on each exhale. I find that it helps me practice the tension that I need to maintain in my core muscles to not let the air escape too fast. Then I can try long tones on the flute with a similar tension. What do you think?

I love the coffee cup analogy :D It can be difficult to manage your air flow - takes practice I guess! :) I do a few Trevor Wye exercises which help with air flow (well, I think they do - as a lot of the exercises (for tone) make you hold notes for quite a long time!

Nice explanation, although I drink tea - does that mean I have "bags" of air?!? :o) (I'm from the UK although so tea not unexpected, although do enjoy the occasional white choc mocha from Starbucks!!!). As for breathing, I think it also needs to be about planning how many 'cups of coffee' you're going to drink during the phrase(s) and knowing how big a cup you need to take, in advance, so you don't need to panic breathe...(e.g. doppio) ....as James Galway said, it depends on your capacity...

Charming and informative. Thanks for posting. You have a beautiful tone. But my problem is sort of the opposite of your major point here. I tend to have a sense of needing to exhale excess air before taking the next breathe. Ideally, all air would be expelled RIGHT when the phrase ends, but I find that sometimes I still have some left, yet not enough for the next phrase. So I then to have to exhale first, then re-breathe. Does that make any sense? FYI, I'm not a classical player, but an improviser, so I don't always know how long my phrase is going to be. That might be the problem, I know, but do you have any thoughts? Thanks so much.

sayheydude101 you said ideally you should completely run out of air at the end of you said ideally you should completely run out of air at the end of a phrase? Well maybe you could scrap that idea. Because if you completely run out you have to take a huge breath. It's much more efficient if you have 20-30% air left and then just take a breath.

Nina, when you were taking your initial two breathes in, did you do so through your nose? I'm just wondering because I often have to work on taking in breathes though my mouth because breathing through my nose always seemed more natural to me. I was often chastised for breathing through my nose and not my mouth. Thanks!

Great video Nina! I only really encounter real problems when a single phrase starts off Forte/Fortissimo comes down to piano/mezzopiano and then rises back up to Forte/Fortissimo. I can't seem to manage the air long/well enough to make that end back up to Forte/Fortissimo. In my best attempts I can manage to get it up to mezzoforte in the end. Any tips?

Hey Nina just a quick question about some trouble I have while playing sax (I play flute aswell) I find that I am fine with controlling my air, but Im always stuck with leftover air when i need oxygen, so when I take another breathe the excess air fills up my lungs and Im always stuck with a chest filled with air and no oxygen. Is there any techniques I could do that could assist in releasing my air even while Im playing? Any ways to control intake?
