For your love of the island experience, John does have a brilliant live version with only about 5 musicians, the congas / bongos being the main initial instrument......it is a vocal duet with his loyal backing singer Lisa Edwards.

Both of his musical directors have done well since that time, with David Hirschfelder winning a BAFTA for his work on the movie “Shine” and Chong Lim conducting the Sydney Symphony Orchestra for John’s terrific concert at the Opera House. Chong is going to be the musical director for the next Commonwealth Games. a

My family had just moved to a tropical area of Australia when this song was all over the radio, so mostly it reminds me of lying awake at night in the stinking heat and humidity 😂 But seriously, it's a beautiful song rendered perfectly by a master vocalist ❤

This is such a beautiful song. One of the songs writers, Ross Wilson, is a very good friend of John's and his songs have featured on many of John's albums. It was originally recorded by Ross's band Mondo Rock. Fundimentally the same but very different arrangments. John is actually a very talented musician as well and knows how best to create arrangements ro best show off his voice. He also worked with one of the best musical directors in David Hershfelder, when this song was recorded so he would have helped influence the arrangment. Either way Ross Wilson often jokes about how he is now laughing all the way to the bank. As John took his song and turned it into a big hit. John also made it popular around the world.. And now lots of other artists have also covered it. To me, it is one of my favourite songs that John sings. It can brighten up my day when I'm in need of a lift ...❤❤❤ Thanks for your insight.

Thanks for another great John reaction! Love this song - loved it when I was 13 and was playing Whispering Jack on repeat, and still love it today. I think John has pretty much impeccable taste when it comes to choosing songs, I can't think of many of his that I don't like, even though his stuff is not my usually preferred genre! David Hirschfelder would have been John's musical director at this point (and also playing keyboards in the band), he is an Oscar nominated composer who's done quite a few movie scores, and also did all the arrangements for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for John's concerts with them, so it's not surprising that you loved the arrangement so much! John really did surround himself with the best of musicians - as is appropriate given his own phenomenal talent - who were just as passionate about the work as he was, and it really shines through in every performance. A couple of performances I'd suggest - 'Age of Reason' with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra - great song, and David does a really nice piano solo in it, that I think you'd enjoy :) and also another from this concert - 'Love's In Need', which is a Stevie Wonder cover, it's done a capella with all of John's band singing, and is quite lovely.

"Cold January Day" is such an odd phrase to Australian ears. 😄 Beautiful reaction Nina. I also love the technical assessment - something I'm gathering from watching an embarrassing amount of Farnham reactions is that the people in the know tend to compliment the arrangements and harmonies. This can only be a testament to the quality of the likes of David Hirschfelder and Chong Lim - John's long time Aussie musical directors.

Please you really need to do more of John’s epic music, a full playlist, because there’s so much great music of John’s out there. This song is so beautiful and performed to perfection by the entire band and John’s agility is on display again. I think John is the greatest male vocalist of all time. He got everything. Endless range, agility, mic technique, breath control out of this world, passion and emotion, and on and on I could go. But the thing I like most is his unbelievable diction, you can hear and understand every word he sings, which is pretty rare. And John is always having such a great time, he’s just there for the love, the music, his band members and his fans. Awesome reaction to our John.

Absolutely. There isn't one Farnsey song I don't love. And not a dud note in any of them. I'm in Wiltshire, south England, about 20 miles north east of Salisbury. 2 days ago, after a day of blue sky with wispy near transparent cloud, the sun settled in to the horizon in the Salisbury direction and the sky above was swathed in red gold ribbons. So you can guess what I was seeing in my head, and, as usual, I had the hugest smile on my face. Any Farnsey song makes me so happy. Feb. '24. UK. E❤.

Nina I really appreciated your analysis and praise for John’s interval jumps etc. Your repetitions consolidated my learning curve and I’ll now hear those runs every time I listen to this, one of my two favourite ballads by John. The other one is “Burn For You” which he co-wrote. For your information, Steve Williams played that beautiful clarinet solo. His finishing notes were amazing. He’s also a professional music teacher. He’s wonderful on the harmonica too, such breath control. He opens the song “Chain Reaction” and that’s him on the YT video thumbnail. John gives Steve free rein and he shines.. You’d swear that you’re hearing an old train gathering momentum. He also dances around as he plays. His other instrument is the saxophone which he plays on “That’s What Love Will Make You Do”. Everyone gets to play a solo on this terrific RnB/Jazz song. Bob Judd plays the best cornet solo ever. He’s previously played for Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jnr! The solo by each section shows what talent there is in this band.

@briangill4000 Lol, please don't - a lot of those "remasters" sound and look worse than the original videos. I'm sorry, I know the effort and thought is there, but they're just not very well done. They usually have a tinny, echoey sound, and often the background music is muffled and they distort on the higher/louder notes (Yesterday is a great example of both muffling of background and distortion - please, close your eyes and listen to it, and hear all of the digital artifacts at the edges of the notes the band are playing, it's so distracting. The original video is old, but the sound is fine, the "remastered" version is far worse). Yeah, on the surface they sound "clearer", but it's at the expense of warmth and depth, and comes with distortion and weird digitised sounds in the background. I'll stick with the originals, and I hope reactors do too.

In case you'd like to hear it sung by the guy who wrote the song, Ross Wilson, a legend Australian music scene in his own right. . (There is also a clip of John and Ross performing it together..) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqW9hKuVl72fhJosi=TF2HLi2gDf7tvetn

Hi Nina, I've seen a few of your reactions now about our national treasure John Farnham which I always enjoy, could I suggest to you to look at another genre that maybe a bit different to you, but I think you will enjoy. Look up Oceans by Hillsong United and do a reaction/critique of that please.

Nina, you mentioned how you loved the vocal of everyone singing. Yes, all of Johns band can hold a note. To see exactly how well you need to react to Johns cover of Stevie Wonders Love's in Need, from the same concert and make sure you watch the intro for his audience interaction, so good. This is the YT link. Enjoy. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b56bXpeZa6ufeas

It's a clavinet
@Dr_KAP
@Dr_KAP 7 ай бұрын
No it isn’t - a clavinet is a keyboard - Stevie Wonder is most associated with it. If you meant clarinet it isn’t a clarinet either- it’s a straight soprano saxophone.

Shame on you Nina, you still don't react to historic duet by maestro Placido Domingo and Dimash, I watch no channel who have classical knowledge and who build they channel by Dimash fans, like you, Tara Simon, Rebecca, Montse Bermudes, doesn't react yet, Dimash post it on his channel 10 days ago, you have more important rubbish to react, I'm sorry on my strong words, you hurt me because I adore you ♥️

Rubbish? I wouldn't exactly call a song from a guy who has hits in every decade for 5 decades Rubbish..... If Dimwit or whatever his name is can do that, I'll cede he is better :)
