Now you need to watch the performance in Tampere, Finland. It's outdoors and they pull out all the stops. This performance did have Dawkins, but otherwise was hindered in a lot of ways by Health and Safety. It WAS good to see Troy play a different instrument in the beginning.

Nina, There is a lot of music and real instruments in this song. Over 600 tracks in the mix. Backing music and instrumental sections arranged with and performed by the London Philharmonic Symphony led by Pip Williams, with real choirs in the mix also. All written by Tuomas. There are documentary videos about the creation of this album. With Harpsichord there were a number of musical references, musical evolutionary easter eggs, including a couple of famous classical melodies. Others will be able to say which ones. Of course the greatest show on Earth is the evolution of life on Earth.

This is probably the greatest performance piece ever written. The fact that the band performed this with absolute perfection at such high energy levels for 22 minutes is just astounding. The sheer amount of calories expended by Kai alone would heat an Olympic sized swimming pool. The exhaustion is clearly written on all of their faces as they take a bow. The Greatest Show on Earth indeed.

I listened to The Greatest Show On Earth for the very first time two months ago at Nightwish's concert at the very same location, Wembley, London. It was the last song on the set and it left me and my daughter (who went to a couple of Nightwish concert many years ago when she was a teenager and Tarja was the vocalist) with a strong feeling of having experienced something very special. I have seen / listened to the song many times after the live experience. Thanks for you great and detailed reaction to this song, which now is very special for me. I am currently introducing Nightwish to my granddaughter (7 years old) starting with Storytime.

They are playing a shorter version of the TGSOE in the current shows, and closing with Ad Astra, with Floor stepping up and singing the final soaring vocal lines (without lyrics) while the rest of the band lines up across the stage and stands at parade rest behind her. I saw them do this in Montreal May 2022. It really hits you hard. Triumphant ending to the show.

I have heard them play this song twice in concert, and it is without a doubt one of the best musical experiences. It may be a 24 minute song, but I will always say it never feels like it's anywhere near that long because of how it's composed and even the slower parts it still moves forward. It never gets bogged down or feels like a chore to listen to. It's hard to pin down a favorite spot in this song because it can change depending on my mood at the time, but one I have to mention is the part where Floor hit that G# followed by the A#/B flat. There's just something so absolutely haunting about that vocal line that just gets me every time. It's so primordial and sends chills up my spine. You should definitely go watch the performance of this from the Tampere show, though. That concert was outdoors and it featured some fireworks on top of the normal pyro happening on stage. But there's just something about the sun setting during the performance of this song that gives it a whole different atmosphere to the Wembley performance. This is without a doubt the magnum opus in Nightwish's repertoire to date. But who knows, maybe Tuomas will have another song to rival this one on the next album!

@@ninaschofield The sound you heard and thought it was the cello was Troy using and e-bow on his guitar, a super sound. I also feel that the Tampere vesion is better, its has more emotion in it for me, however I love both versions just as much for their own differences. Troy using the E-bow on the guitar in the wembley version i prefer more. Well worth watching the Tampere version though. The more you listen the more you hear little bits you missed. There was even a brief history of music inside this song about the history of mankind: - Tribal music - Gregorian chants - classic music (Bach) - banjo or something like that -> folk music - "Enter Sandman“ from Metallica ->one of the most iconic metal songs ever - disco / techno beats Isn‘t the history of music within such a short passage brilliant as well? The few techno beats after „Enter Sandman“ are so subtle and awesome.

Another lovely reaction! Definitely Tuomas' Magnus Opus although I think All the Works of Nature Which Adorn the World really shows off Tuomas' compositional genius. It is a 30 minute orchestral piece that comprises the second disc of their latest album, Human Nature. There is a band approved music video put together by Sensei Music Videos that is the perfect accompaniment to the score. The Nightwish Army endlessly debates Wembley vs Tampere but they are both awesome productions and unique in their own way. I happen to lean towards Tampere. With it's outdoor stage, fireworks, different instrument used by Troy in the first part and Floor's outfit it just feels even more epic to me. Plus it is in front of the band's home crowd and Floor's parents were in attendance as well so they really put their all into it. Definitely worth a watch. A shortened version of this song is still the show closer on their current tour with Last Ride of the Day, Ghost Love Score, Greatest Show on Earth, and then the last movement of All the Works of Nature that Adorn the World, Ad Astra as the outro. When I saw them live last May I don't think I have ever left a concert more uplifted and excited to be living my life.

There is a short documentary clip on KZbin interviewing Prof. Richard Dawkins immediately afterwards. He was a bit shell-shocked... It turned out that although he's spent decades speaking to large audiences, and sometimes having hostile debates in front of them, he'd never been to a huge rock concert before, and the sheer energy of the music plus the crowd was quite overwhelming to him. Dawkins' book about evolution, The Greatest Show on Earth, inspired Tuomas to write this suite and several other tracks on the album after Troy gave him a copy. The title of the album, Endless Forms Most Beautiful, comes from the Charles Darwin quote that Dawkins read at the end. The band sweated blood composing a letter to Dawkins asking him to read some quotes from the book for the album. The first time they got no response, so they sent a second letter, and purely by chance, it was read by one of Dawkins' assistants who happened to be a Nightwish fan, so he was able to reassure Dawkins that the band were serious and respectful, and not using him a 'gimmick'.

Tuomas the keyboardist and composer studied to be a biologist. The seemingly repetive keyboard intro was his way of musically simulating the trillions upon trillions of attempted random molecular combinations it took to finally get the first double helix of DNA. Then, after that, everything began to click rapidly build upon that initial formation. Brilliant !

A celebration of the evolution that brought us here, today. The history of our known universe wrapped into one epic song, an impossible task it seems.. but not for Tuomas.. how his mind works at a different level, will always amaze me. With such an impressive repertoire that Nightwish has, i personally count this song as their magnum opus because it has everything in it that makes this band such a force in music. And Richard's spoken word is perfect for this song too, his tone of voice makes the story element even greater to me. This is one of those songs that get better with each listen and you will find new sounds and details for a long time as well, it's such a detailed song.

Another great reaction. The guitar section at the beginning is Troy playing his guitar with the Ebow. I was there seeing this. Not this actual performance, but same venue Wembley in November last year. Unforgettable. The blend if voices is still there with Floor and Troy.

Great reaction Nina - one of my favourite things about this song (apart from the amazing arrangement and subject matter) is that Tuomas pushes his keyboard more to the front than in the vast majority of NW songs - and as always I enjoyed watching you pick parts out on the piano yourself :) I have a strange suggestion for a vocal coach, but as you connect with Tuomas' musicality, arrangement and thoughtfulness about the world I recommend "All the works of nature which adorn the world" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJ-ylYRrjLONgM0 It's largely classical instrumental with a small amount of spoken word + choir, and a little of Floor - it's potentially too long for a reaction, but even for your own enjoyment I highly suggest you check it out. Cheers from Manchester

Others have done reactions of this piece, it's only a few minutes longer (yes, longer) than The Greatest Show on Earth. And I know I personally would love to see her reaction and hear her insights.

I've personally always preffered the Tampere version, Troy starts out on his Irish whistles then switches to his Ulaen pipes for the intro and they have fireworks going off above the stadium for the big hits.

Well done, Nina...just subscribed and now just wanna let ya know, it's so fine to watch 'a' reactor, who really shares together with 'us', the extremely and unreachanable heights and also the physical and emotional, mental experiences with that best band ever to ever have seen the light on this beautiful planet.

Absolutely great breakdown and you brought out a lot of things that are new from the other probably 150 reactions to this song I've watched. I enjoy you commenting on the patterns and replaying them. I know you were not wanting an hour long video, so didn't pause and break down every note and that's perfectly fine. Please don't pay attention to the nasty comments your will be receiving from some of the narrow-minded, hardcore Nightwish fans who demand the exact style of reaction that they want... they've caused quite a few reactors to completely not react to Nighwish anymore. They don't realize that their ignorance is actually hurting the band and turning people away. Keep doing your exact style and dont change a thing! 11/10 ❤

This song is so darn cool...and there are plenty of "tributes" woven into the song from other bands. There are a few places where Emppu weaves a bit of "Pantera" into song, and my favorite is when Emppu and I am pretty sure Marco joins him with a tribute to Metallica, with the intro to "Enter Sandman" ( which you really need to react to, along with one of my favorites, Nothing Else Matters" ). Kai really gets a woman long on the drums in this song!!! The ending of the song is amazing....brings tears to my eyes every time! You should also react to the title song of this album, "Endless Forms Most Beautiful.". There is a live version and a lyrics video version...which I personally prefer...mainly because I find it more entertaining. Thank you...for your time and obvious passion for music! My passion is painting those " Endless Forms Most Beautiful!"
