I think the story is mostly apocryphal, but back in the day the story on the Internet regarding "Wish" and the Grammy award was that Trent said he wanted his headstone to read "Said 'fist-f**k', won a Grammy" XD
@Scottie_McNaughty
@Scottie_McNaughty 9 сағат бұрын
You're slightly off. He was trying to break his record deal with Broken, because the label wanted NIN to go in a U2 direction. So he recorded Broken in secret, then brought it to the label, who reluctantly released it. When he got a Grammy he was shocked, because he was trying to go as hard against the mainstream as possible, which is when he joked, "my headstone will read, 'Trent Reznor said "fist fuck" won a Grammy & died." I remember this as it was happening, reading magazine articles in 1992, before the modern Internet, which started in 1995... In 92 there wasn't such a thing as websites. Just chat rooms where computer geeks would type. Practically nobody was online (I was one of the geeks, so I remember that too)

Trent Reznor was heavily influenced by Ministry on 'Pretty hate machine'... NIN's debut album. On the 'Broken' EP, his musical vision became more original and NIN truly became a revolutionary musical project that would eventually bring the creation of their 1994 masterpiece album 'The Downward Spiral'... Ministry is also a great band to check out... albums like 'The mind is a terrible thing to taste'... 'Psalm 69' ... 'Houses of the mole' ... 'Dark side of the spoon'... etc.

I'm very glad to see that the 90s output has so far impressed you. The Downward Spiral required Pretty Hate Machine to establish its electronic-ness, while Broken embraced the use of live instruments in the studio TDS fuses them both. Broken was recorded in secret on Reznor's dime. TvT record wanted Reznor to make another Pretty Hate Machine, but he was not interested in that. It resulted in a massive war between record companies. Reznor spent all his money keeping his band afloat until finally Iovine showed up at his doorstep with a record company. According to Iovine, Reznor gave his demands of complete creative freedom which Iovine agreed. Then Reznor. "Oh, here's by the way. Take this. It's called Broken." and handed him the finished EP. I know you'll enjoy everything up to The Fragile, but I hope you'll keep a mind open for older, sober Nine Inch Nails. Reznor isn't a fan of repeating the past. The music gets very different. youu start to really see Reznor's future scoring career come to life and the most recent releases: The EP trilogy return to the 1990s.

Two things in regards to Physical, the roaring sound in the background comes from Trent's dog Maisie who was a puppy at the time who bit sound engineer Sean Beavan to which is you speed up the roaring before that final chorus you can hear Sean shout "Ow fucker!" Another one is right at the start you can hear Trent whisper "Eat your heart out, Steve" which is a direct reference to Steve Gotleib, who was head of TVT

24:01 - Compositionally, Trent Reznor always writes his songs as long build-ups with the full realization of the song in the outro. That explains why you like them so much - going forward, especially in THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL and THE FRAGILE, you'll come across dozens and dozens of tracks that build up towards a huge climax and outro. Nine Inch Nails doesn't usually blow their load on the chorus very often, they're much more rare songs compositionally.

I bought this on cassette when it came out. The whole beginning of side 2 was blank until the end when Physical fades in. It’s actually an Adam Ant cover and I saw NIN in Worcester, MA (US) play this the only time Adam Ant joined them on stage to perform it. Also, when the song comes in you can gear Trent whisper “Eat your heart out, Steve” which was directed towards Steve Gottlieb of TVT Records who wouldn’t let him out of a bad contract. This EP was recorded in secret and dropped after he was free from his obligations. So glad you liked the album. It was absolutely breathtaking when it dropped. Also, if you ever get a chance to see NIN live DO NOT MISS IT. Out of hundreds of shows I’ve been to they put on the best shows every time. By far. Reznor's first album was under the TVT records label. The label didn't want him to "evolve" his sound and wouldn't let him out of his contract. Fortunately, Jimmy Lovine from Interscope saw his genius and essentially bought out TVT. Interscope also gave him his own label, Nothing Records. Then the genius of Trent Reznor was truly unleashed on the world! Notable: Reznor signed Marilyn Manson to Nothing Records.

Broken was an EP Trent wrote out of frustrations with his label, TVT, which had him touring non-stop. Interscope eventually got TVT to sign over NIN and allowed Trent his own autonomy on their label. Trent already had Broken written and recorded and launched it with interscope right away, the lyrics reflecting the intense frustrations with TVT. Trent also set aside a rule that Broken was going to be more guitar based. He has different instrument/arrangement focuses for each album/EP. (The Slip is supposed to sound like it was produced in a garage with little budget.)

“Hes good at song writing” that is an understatement of massive proportions lol. Just look at all the movie and video game scores hes done on top of his music for nine inch nails.

Wow, I've got to admit that I never listened to NIN, but I very much enjoy these electronics. They're about as good as in Kraftwerk, but just a whole different genre. So much more metal, and really well done!

The heavier sound heard here is a great result of how the PHM songs were played on tour. The band made them heavier and meaner. According to lore, a major force was guitarist Richard Patrick, co-founder of Filter.

Nine Inch Nails just announced today that because some dates of their upcoming world tour have leaked, a tour is confirmed. I think you owe it to yourself to see them live if dates are announced near you. Honestly, some of the best live experiences I've ever had were Nine Inch Nails concerts. The production matches the music's energy. You will not be disappointed.

Loved your reaction. when you finish your NIN journey, you should check out some of the earlier industrial acts - Ministry, Skinny Puppy, and KMFDM, and see how that evolved to NIN.

Gonna sit back and have popcorn ready for your reaction to The Downward Spiral. I don’t think it’s possible to listen to that album and not be permanently changed by it.

When i saw your reaction to 'PHM', couldnt wait for you to hear BROKEN. =Awesome reaction!!🙌❤ -That was my first reaction to it also!lol Love that EP, still to this day!!! As a metalhead, dont think he ever topped this. I really like DownwardSpiral & Fragile, but not in the same way as Broken.

Just know that this is probably the heaviest NIN project. The Downward Spiral is an entirely different beast. Heavy in it's on ways, and one of my all time favorite albums.

True story, when I was an intern at Wax Trax records the founders of the label Jim Nash and Danny Fletcher told me how they had misplaced the demo Trent sent to them. Imagine the world if they had signed NIN instead of TVT, but then maybe without the pure hatred Trent had for Steve Gotlieb, the band might not have reached the heights they did. Jim and Danny were such characters, rest in power!

Physical is actually an Adam Ant song, but your point of Trent being a great songwriter still stands.

I think you're going to like The Downward Spiral when you get round to it. Plus the stand-alone track Perfect Drug, not so much for the guitar, but because it's a rollercoaster ride.

Blessings to the person who requested the Broken EP! It was my first NIN purchase, The Downward Spiral was out at the time but I didn’t have enough money to buy it. If I remember correctly Broken was on sale so I took a chance on it, and oh boy! To say it rocked my world is putting it lightly. I believe a lot of NIN fans view the Broken EP more like a full length album. I know that I do. The crazy thing is, my favorite album from NIN is The Fragile. That album is very different from Broken. Like, really different. I won’t say anything more about it. No spoilers from me 🤫
