it's actually just wood block sample a lot of nin sounds are like that. Bass on closer is from an old sample pack

I’ve always thought the compelling thing about the sounds on Pretty Hate Machine were that they were in many ways very pop-friendly synth & instrument sounds, but they were used in a dark, sinister, and unsuspecting way. That’s not to say they weren’t original, just that I imagine if I myself pulled them up on a keyboard, my brain would first assume “upbeat pop music” with most of them, not devastating Nine Inch Nails songs.

This album, is amazing. It was played pretty heavily on my Sony Discman in my early Goth days. Every single song in it is a banger and the track sequence is perfect. Great job on the synth patches.

Sin synth always reminds me of Reznors earlier band Birds of Paradise? I can’t remember because I was very small but I remember My father telling me he was in that band too and being quite surprised due to the difference in style but some choices for the synth were a fingerprint.

Terrible lie’s lead part is consisted of tuned down distorted “wooden block” sample from some 80’s rompler / sampler synth (I forgot which one unfortunately)

I was able to get that exact Terrible Lie tone with a Korg Volca into an EHX overdrive pedal, recorded at 2x on a cassette deck, then played back at normal speed.

These sounds were created from VST programs. To be honest the process wouldn't be so interesting, because it takes a lot of time, and attempts for me. Maybe next time I create a short video from the settings.

considering most of these sounds would be FM ( digital) from an xpander. ran through an EMAX ( digital) id say it would be easier than you would think with digital VST's . lol.

Yes I think this is fake. For terrible lie, head like a hole and the only time, he just used sounds from official multitracks. The pitch bend is not even used on the last note 2:15 . Obviously there is nothing happening during "sin" because the song multitracks was never released..

Why not just recreate these songs from scratch inside a DAW? Damn...the arrangement and composition are so painfully simple, that I could bang out these tunes in no time(with my eyes closed.)
