Filter was and still is one of my favorite bands of that time. I even got to see them live at the Hollywood Palladium. Remember reading he wrote his album in a home Mac and studio. Hey man!!! Nice shot!!!

He WAS making that while touring with nine inch nails. Once touring stopped, he stopped getting paid until their next tour. That was the job. Richard wanted to have some creative role in the new music Trent was working on, but Trent would not allow it because he did not want to share any royalties or record sales. Nine inch nails has always been Trent with a group of hired musicians.

I got to see the NIN iteration with Rich when they played on the first Lollapalooza tour. They weren't big enough yet to get a night time slot so they were out there in the blazing Carolina sunlight with their smoke machines and their lights going off and you could barely see the stage. I already loved NIN because of Pretty hate Machine, but it definitely wasn't the best format for their live show.

That sounds amazing though and it's always nice to see them live I got to see them back during the fragile tour (not one of my favorite albums though) at Madison square garden in New York and then a couple of days later again in Baltimore Maryland. Amazing show each time and Marilyn Manson came out during the end in New York to sting "Star Fuckers." (Which was written about manson lol) One of the coolest moments in my life❤

@@kristinamercado5737 Yeah, it was still great but I've seen them at Lolla and at Coachella and if I were ranking their shows those would be the bottom two. I saw them at an arena in Greenville SC when they toured after the Coachella show and they were incredible! Easily ten times better. Also sa wthem when they toured with Bowie! But no signs of Mr. Manson any of those times. They do put on an amazing live show.

I think they recognized he needed to leave to do his own work cuz of his talent so they made it to where he quit instead of playing it safe in NIN. He'd already made the connections and had the know how and experience. The only thing stopping him was himself. Maybe it wasn't that way, idk.

He wasn’t making that much money per year, he wasn’t on a pay roll like you are. That was his pay when working as a hired gun touring with NIN, and maybe working in studio as needed. Otherwise it sounds like he didn’t have a steady source of income.

Love that song too! It was actually written about Budd Dwyer, the treasurer who shot himself on live tv. The Kurt Cobain thing is such a huge misconception that even Dave Grohl asked him about it lol

Wow, thats totally fucked. I never understood the concept of NiN. Did the "other members" just play live with Trent. He always wrote/recorded all the music then brought the "others" in, told them what he wanted, then they played it live?

Trent Reznor IS Nine Inch Nails Trent described NIN as being two entities, the live band which included members like Patrick, Danny Lohner, Robin Finck, Ilan Rubin, etc who are just hired guns And the studio entity which is Trent and whoever happens to be in the studio with him at the time. Trent writes all the music and all of the lyrics. He stated in interviews that the whole reason he started NIN was because the previous bands he worked with (Exotic Birds, Slam Bamboo, etc) were difficult to work with in the studio and weren't even on the same page in terms of musical direction. He couldn't find musicians that could properly translate what he was thinking at the time, so he did everything himself. Earlier on Trent thought of studio NIN being only himself, but later in life he's more freely admitted that the bands sound is the result of all the studio musicians that have contributed with Trent's overall guidance. Trent writes all the music, but a lot of the sounds, synths, samples, and various parts have comes from the likes of Atticus Ross, Chris Vrenna, Charlie Clouser, Alesandro Cortini, and other studio musicians. However he considers Atticus Ross to be the only true other member of NIN other than himself because of the sheer amount of contributions he has made in the past few decades. Atticus is the only person that Trent has worked with in the studio that gels with him perfectly. The live band however doesn't just play clinical versions of the tracks, they interpret the music live and give them own input. The live versions of songs are arguably better than the studio versions (which is rare for a band) and each member has a degree of influence on the overall sound and gives their input and ideas. Richard Patrick's only recorded contribution to NIN was a guitar drone between 'Sanctified' and 'Something I can Never Have' on Pretty Hate Machine, but was listed as an influence on Broken because in his own words he was constantly telling Trent to 'keep it dark, keep in heavy'. Patrick was hired because Trent needed a live guitarist, and in context of NIN that's all he ever was. He proved to be a talented song writer in his own right, but needed to leave the band to accomplish that. Vrenna however had far more of an influence in the studio being responsible for much of the programming, drum machines, and samples on Pretty Hate Machine, Broken, and The Downward Spiral. There is a notable change in musical style after he left the band, and you can hear this influence on his own albums with Tweaker.

@@bdoom6283 This was decades ago, 700 in today’s money is like $1,200 a week. Then don’t live in LA if you are a part-time contracted touring musician. And peasants have been complaining about that for thousands of years, to put it in an eternal context its the fight to the death between master and servant, as Hegel said. Life will always be that way, only the economic systems change. Also, what most people don’t understand is that it is extremely expensive to tour. Most bands back in the day didn’t make a profit touring, they break even or lose money. Only today with astronomical ticket prices due to music piracy is there more cash available to go around. He was getting a fair cut of the pie. Nine inch nails wasn’t headlining arenas, I think Spiral only sold a few million at the time. If you think 700 is bad, he should think about bands and artists that don’t even sell millions and made perhaps 700 in three weeks. It all goes back to wanting to be paid in money that isn’t even made through the work you are doing hence entitlement. He wants ALSO the royalties that trent gets which had nothing to do with him and represents lifetime of uncompensated creative work, trent toiling for nothng on his own time for years until he’s finally able to realize his full vision. 700 a week is absolutely a living wage. I think he’s also struggling with unrequited rock and roll fantasies. You have to be part of a creative process that sold many times more than trent could at the time. Guns n Roses was like that. What trent isnt doing is hogging the money profited on tour for himself. I bet it was a roughly even split after expenses. I known this because I know the music industry unlike you.

Although Dwyer was the impetus that started him thinking on the topic of sui cide, the song wasn't specifically about Budd Dwyer and his very public act. Many thought it was about Cobain as well, but neither are specifically true. I forget how he worded it but he said he was fascinated by the idea of someone taking their end into their own hands and how much power and resolve it would take to do that. Please remember I'm paraphrasing a half remembered interview... The words may not have been "power and resolve" but this was the gyst of it.
