Pretty Hate Machine is a good album in my opinion, I dont think it gets enough credit, as Downward Spiral is their best album, but for a debut its very strong. I like songs such as Terrible Lie, Down In It, Sanctifed, Something I can Never have, Sin and Ringfinger.

I saw Nine Inch Nails open for Peter Murphy when this album came out. It was a mid size club. No internet for info. Not that well known. I had heard one song. They were set up on the floor in front of the stage. They were full of energy and actually moshing with each other during the songs. It was an awesome show. It seemed liked Peter was aggravated that the opening band was causing such a stir. I’ve talked to at least three other people that the first time they were aware of or saw NIN was that tour opening for Peter Murphy.
@submandave11252 ай бұрын
I had this same experience at the Boathouse in Norfolk, VA w/ NIN on the Peter Murphy tour. They totally stole the show. In fact, there was so much excitement for NIN that they came back to open another show shortly thereafter and, like many, I bought tickets solely for the opener (in fact, I don't ever remember who the headliner was).

"Did he do Tron? No that was Daft Punk"... Nine Inch Nails were announced as the artists for the next Tron film the same day that this video was released! I'd definitely suggest giving the album a listen but i'll always push for a reaction to the three track run The Frail/The Fragile/The Wretched from The Fragile album.

This song still gets me emotional after listening to it countless times. I first discovered it when I was 13 and going through the existential crisis that comes with realizing there is no god and all the emotions that come with feeling that everyone has been lying to you about religion. At a time when I felt completely alone and betrayed, this song helped me realize there are other people that feel the exact same way. …that I wasn’t alone. Trent Reznor helped me and many others get through the most difficult time of my life.

To say I was obsessed with anything he did back in the late 90s is an understatement 😂 I’m pretty sure I only listened to NIN for a period of time, for about 2 years…it was definitely during my angsty, becoming an adult, riddled with anxiety and depression and very lonely/feeling unlovable stage

So...I have this thing about seeing bands at the right time. Not after they jumped the shark, not during their 4th farewell tour, not when the "band" features one single member from their classic line up. No, ideally, you want to see a band either at the height of their powers, or just before. I saw NIN at the first Lollapalooza in '91 and, in a festival lineup that included gun shooting Butthole Surfers, Ice-T's Body Count and of course Jane's at the height of their popularity, they were the one band that made everyone go "yup, this was worth the money". NIN went on to greater and and more infamous things later on, but that line up in '91 and their performances that year were just so kinetic and visceral and phenomenal that nobody, even the mighty Fishbone, could touch them. Which brings me to this song. I don't own this record. It sounds tinny and empty and devoid of power. Now, if you hear them do these songs live, then we can talk. If you need proof of how much better NIN are live, check _Halo 17_ .

This whole album is fire! All of the songs are unique and have their own appeal. I think the most popular song back when it was released was Down In It. It has a really good beat - almost a dubstep feel. NIN was definitely ahead of its time. Head Like A Hole was also popular. Some of my personal favorites from the album are actually Sanctified, Kinda I Want To, The Only Time and Ringfinger (my favorite, I think). The lyrics are counter-culture, so they really appeal to my nonconformist nature.

While "Downward Spiral" is more cohesive and arguably a better album, I can't say enough how important and seminal "Pretty Hate Machine" was. When this album went into heavy rotation in '90 it marked the real arrival of Industrial into the commercial market. Largely a solo effort (similarly to Boston's and Prince's debuts), it was Trent Reznor's hand at changing the face of popular rock.

PHM is a fabulous album, I remember hearing it back in 89/90 when it first came out, in my senior year of high school, and I saw them on tour first in January of 1991, and it was an amazing memory to have, them back in the embryonic form. I wish I could have seen him even earlier as he played some much smaller venues in Cleveland initially, but 16 year old me would not have known what the Phantasy theater was, even though 25 year old me was playing shows at it, haha. It would be a great album for you to continue to explore. Just like Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me would. (gotta get that in somewhere haha)

NIN are well worth exploring further. The distressed textures are a signature of Trent Reznor's sound. Pretty Hate Machine is a great album and probably a good introduction to NIN, but for me, The Downward Spiral and The Fragile surpass it. Also, the stand-alone track The Perfect Drug is a rollercoaster ride that will leave you breathless.

Broken is essential because it bridges the gap to Downward Spiral. You have to know what came before to put the future in context. The Fragile is a good album but people hold it a little too lofty IMHO. With Teeth is better.

I'd vote for a full listen on the channel (ignoring the naysayers, but then again... don't you always!). After "Pretty Hate Machine", I would move on to "The Fragile" and compare how much 10 years changed/improved things.
@Eduardo-Ferreira19822 ай бұрын
It's more electronic than Downward. I know it very well, since I recorded it to a cassette back in the nineties. I think it's more accessible and "danceable", if I can say this. Let me just say despite all its electronics, technological sound, no one can do this again. Those were the days. (when all was still open). Now we're encircled in repetition, uninspired and revisitations to those old styles when music mattered. (I wonder why it doesn't matter like that anymore)
@eboethrasher2 ай бұрын
Umm, once something is created, nobody can create it again. Technology hit the top level for sound synthesis. Other than sound manipulation, we have not evolved that much since the 90s and 2000s. Guitar effects are pretty much the same, they get cleaner, but they follow the same principles. Kraftwerk broke barriers. OMD and Numan took them down even further. Especially OMD. Without OMD, you have no Depeche Mode. Who then continued to break them down even further. And a young Trent heard Depeche and The Cure and was influenced. He added other sounds into it, more industrial, but with always a respect for the more ambient and darker sides of things, as well as rock and dance.
@michaelfrank22662 ай бұрын
I am not the least bit invested in the band Nine Inch Nails. I wouldn't know a Nails tune if it bit me. This song was as good as any other rock tune. (Lyrics: There is nothing wrong with being angry with God. You can not be angry with someone who does not exist. There is theology which addresses the human condition but y'all got to find it yourself. Your mission is to find the answers. I have no mission to spoon feed you.) Back to the album. Based upon this one song. This album may be worth a listen?
