@@Ciriousglitch Pretty Hate Machine still holds a special place in my heart, as does the girl that opened me up to NIN with that CD. There are better stand alone songs on other albums, and probably other albums that are better, but the memories and feelings that go along with Pretty Hate Machine will always have it at the top. Its been in every car I've owned in one format or another for almost 30 years, lol.

"What if this whole crusade's ...a charade" is just an insanely well written line. The phrasing, and how it flows is pure magic. NIN, for the serious fans anyway, is almost more of an ethos or philosophy, than just a collection of great music. Like it's own alternate reality with it's own history, and obscure references. Talk of Halos, and revolutions, and the threads that tie it all together.

The music of Nine Inch Nails is a world of incredible songwriting and innovative recording. His earliest work is very light and synth-y. That was followed by an ultra-heavy EP. By the mid ‘90s he was combining the two to excellent effect. Around that time was when the mainstream noticed his work more. But it’s the opposite of easily digestible music. The songwriting is just second to none in my view.

Trent Reznor/NIN has a very dynamic library. Their earlier material (Pretty Hate Machine/Broken/Downward Spiral) is much more aggressive, but then Reznor started to mellow out (relatively speaking, for the most part) in the late 90s with 'The Fragile', their 3rd LP (they've released 11 albums total). Reznor has also done several movie scores, by himself ('Natural Born Killers', 'The Lost Highway') as well as with his NIN bandmate, Atticus Ross ('The Social Network', 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo', 'Gone Girl' & Pixar's 'Soul', among others). Reznor & Ross also produced Halsey's latest album "If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power"...

FYI - NIN IS Trent Reznor with Atticus Ross joining as his permanent mix engineer and co-composer in 2016. In studio, Trent writes all the music, sings all the lyrics, and plays all the instruments! When NIN goes on tour, Trent hires and trains the musicians on his songs for that tour, then does it again for the next! Trent and Atticus have also wrote scores for many TV shows (The Batman for example), and many movies (h the Social Network for example)! 😊

Just subbed solely because you’re reacting to this song. A few other songs I think you’d both appreciate and enjoy [that you’ve unlikely encountered before]: - Oslo in the Summertime - of Montreal (well-produced hook and great cohesion) - Subways - The Avalanches (masterful, complex, sample-heavy production) - Now - Eyedea & Abilities (one MC, one DJ. Yes, that’s legit scratching (and rapping - the lyrics have meaning)) - When I Was Done Dying - Dan Deacon (watch the official video. No pauses until it’s done. If you smoke or otherwise inebriate, I’d recommend a pre-consumption before watching) Great reaction - hopefully you give one of those (^) a shot!

So so so happy you didn't start with Closer. I hate when people suggest that to first timers, it's great, I love it, but it distracts from Trent's talent becausexthey're too busy weirded outvbyvthe video or too startled by the main chous. Really, Closer is for like, 5th song, once you've Really gotten a taste of what makes Trent, Trent.😅🤷♀️. Other than that, I'm not suggesting anything, I'm sure the others got that covered andconce u really like it, you'll get to them all eventually. I had taken a NIN break for a while now (been pretty laser focused on a certain melodic death metal band-Be'lakor💚), lucky me there's a bunch of albums I missed! This is gonna be awesome. It's like it's 1994 again, but this time I don't have to wait for the release date, go to an actual record store, & buy a physical CD. 😅 I tell you, I was *giddy* for that album & it did not disappoint. It was all I loved about Trent and some wonderful new thrills I didn't expect. 💚 Enjoy tye journey!
