Yeah from 3:05 onwards is beautiful. Its almost like a slow but satisfying release of stress and tension after a frantic or stressful period knowing you survived, but with a pinch of melancholy thrown in but not in a bad way. Feel like this song perfectly encapsulates the feeling of indulging a bad habit or addiction, riding the high of it, then the depression that follows.
@Gibsoncustom892 жыл бұрын
Fools you into thinking it's a song about loving someone so bad you can't live without them. But anyone with addiction experience will say this is a love song to something like opiates. I guess love addiction works too, but there's no reading behind the lines here in a song called "The Perfect Drug"

A thumbs up just isn’t enough sometimes. This is perfection. Every single frame is like a master’s painting. Mark Romanek directed this video, he also did the remarkable Closer video and the beautiful movie One Hour Photo with Robin Williams. The Perfect Drug video budget was some insane figure in excess of $800,000. The rooftop set, the ‘freezer room’ set and the large hand sculpture all ate large portions of the budget. But sometimes large budgets are given to the right people who create greatness. For the video Romanek was inspired by the artists Edward Gorey and Gustav Klimt. The large painting somewhat resembles ‘The Kiss’ by Klimt. The video’s narrative (presumably) follows a grieving man’s descent into madness haunted by a child’s specter. Together with vampiric themes and the Absinthe trip reminiscent of Francis Coppola’s Dracula which was still strong in peoples consciousness at the time. I was around sixteen when this was released. It struck a strong chord for me. I couldn’t believe the beauty and power of the song/video combination. Still feel the same all these years later. Today I’m thankful to have been growing up when this timeless piece was new. Every so often I come back and re-watch this video. Always look forward to the scene at the end with Trent gazing mournfully out the window with a greyhound resting on his knee and the child figure looming above. Accompanied by the song’s gorgeous outro. That image is so strong for me. I know Trent wasn’t thrilled about having a video with a bloated budget, and I think he had a certain disdain for the song at that time too. But I hope he can look back now and see/hear this with a fresh perspective. I can’t believe anyone could see/hear this and not appreciate its beauty. Big kudos to all involved!

This is my absolute all time favorite song, and I will tell you why: One time I was looking down at the street in front of my house from the second story, one day, and along came this individual who was shuffling along, dancing down the street; my first thought was “I would love to have what has made him so high, without a care, that he could dance”; it was a few minutes later that I saw the earbuds, and realized that it was just pure emotion from music: music is literally the perfect drug. And what better than the song about the perfect drug? [and I fucking love Trent]

Remember being in high school in 1994 when The Downward Spiral came out. Listened to it on infinite repeat on my CD player. 3 years later this amazing song came out. After the Downward Spiral, this was the only new NIN song for the next 5 years, which back then felt like an eternity for new material by Trent. I payed extra cash for the Rusty Nails bootleg compilations and interview CDs with Trent just to hear something new, but the Perfect Drug was still the only “new” original material I had from 1994 until The Fragile came out in 1999. I wore out The Lost Highway Soundtrack-Track 3, playing it over and over. In September 2018 I got to see him play this great song live for the first time ever at Red Rocks. Thanks for this one song Trent that kept me going during that long stretch as a teenager between albums.

So to me this all seems very consistent and well conceived.
