Nine Inch Nails - Unreleased "Behind The Scenes of Closer" Tape 1

NIN - THE UNRELEASED "BEHIND THE SCENES OF CLOSER" TAPES
Obtained (after much searching, begging and false alarms over the years) by
Eatyourblud, these are the fabled tapes that were touted on Ebay several years
ago, but were ultimately never sent to the winning bidders. A 2 hour version
was offered for sale by a scumbag seller, who then pulled the auctions and
disappeared. But i've managed to track down this version, which is almost
5 hours in length...
These are NOT sourced from the same footage that was used on the 'Appendage'
extras section of the Closure dvd leak, but from an alternate camera angle,
shot by a completely different individual who also filmed on set. PAL format,
expertly converted to a convenient 3 disc set by Itsjustdave. You can read more

I'd like to dedicate the release of these dvds to everyone who contributed to the
"Blud Fund", organized by the very awesome Naut and Ryan at ETS/nin.au, which
helped myself and my family through a very bad patch of financial difficulty and
poor health. I hope this helps to say thanks and provides a nice little payback
for all of your extraordinary generosity in my time of need. I hope you enjoy them,
and again, words can't say how overwhelmed myself and my family were by your help.

very educational in terms of video production...mainly came here to see about the monkey, Rugrat, and at first they seemed very patient and gentle with her, but as the filming of that scene went on, they were a bit forceful, and Rugrat was licking at her bound wrist, they started with the ropes loose so she could easily slip out, but then they tightened them, and Rugrat did not look too happy. asking a human who understands what they involved in is one thing, asking a monkey who has no idea really what's going on, except being told to do what her trainer tells it, is another. so that's pretty disappointing

It’s an uncomfortable scene even without the context, but great art isn’t always comfortable. I think we’re disconnected from our basic nature even though we don’t think twice walking down the meat section at the store. We need to be rattled out of our fantasy sometimes just to see it. Anyways i applaud them for taking risks and making something most wouldn’t even dare to consider.

@@sibbyeskie i get what you're saying... something that always comes to mind is Alejandro Jodorowsky killing all those rabbits himself (supposedly) for that scene in El Topo (was it?) anyway, no matter what, i find it unacceptable to use living animals in a way that is frightening, upsetting, uncomfortable for them, purely for our own entertainment - & this video is basically just entertainment, i personally don't consider it high art, though i think the song is great. i think Skinny Puppy did a great job of making art that drew attention to things, made us uncomfortable to wake us up & think

And certainly the temporary discomfort of an animal isn't nearly as permanent and prolonged as raising it in dubious conditions just to slaughter and eat. Perhaps I'm just consistent and observe the grey areas in the things I value. So yeah I'm fine with a nice steak and the video for Closer. An entire generation who felt the very same.

As much as I’ve idolized this video for 30 years, I still wish the monkey wasn’t used. The video would’ve been still perfect without those mere seconds of footage that was actually put through the Final Cut. Poor baby didn’t need to be put through all of that. The beating dead heart, Trent licking the breast-shaped microphone, Trent floating, and Trent plying the piano at the end are what have been burned into my brain for decades.

I love this video except the monkey part... pointless, the effect is méh and more importantly it takes attention away from the heart scene that is pure sublime perfection. man I heard that this video showed it wasn't actually animal abuse, and while it's not as bad as I thought it would be, I'm still disappointed to see that the animal was in some distress, which you can tell by the smile and facial tension. :( It's not like straight up animal abuse, but the monkey was definitely stressed in a way that could have been prevented.

I was one of the Monkey Trainers on this. I spent a week in Jail over this video. Someone on set called PETA and said I actually screwed her to the cross. If they would have come forward with this back when I got arrested it sure would have saved me a lot of lawyer fees and not spent time in the Twin Towers. She is the same monkey we used in the movie "Virus" which is getting a lot of play this week because of the Corona Virus hysterics. This was probably one of the most fucked up videos I worked on. Danzig was filming next door and everyone was going back and forth between the two sets, the director wanted 10 shots of everything.it was a 36 hour day for us, I tried to let Rugrat rest as much as I could but they still waited until the middle of the night to shoot our bit. Propaganda Films can kiss my ass.

Director Mark Romanek: ''We made it with an old camera from 1919, and the whole thing was hand-cranked'' According to director Mark Romanek, the video was filmed using "a slightly out of date film stock but it was still a contemporary film stock. "They had stopped making it three years before and we found some of it. All the new color film stocks have this T-Grain, like little Ts that are interlocking. The film stock we used had the original old granular grain. The new stocks are just really modern looking, really sharp, really contrasty, very fine grain. We didn't want that.
