Hey Ninh, I didn't see it mentioned anywhere in the comments section, so I wanted to raise an issue about base-stealing in softball. From my understanding it's quite a bit different than from baseball in that the baserunner MUST remain touching the base until the ball has left the pitcher's hand in softball, while in baseball, the baserunner is not obligated to remain touching the base (known as leading off when they leave the base) and may break for the next base whenever they so choose.

Believe it or not, those rules vary still depending on whether it's fast-pitch or slow pitch. Whilst they're both different to baseball, I felt that explaining these differences would confuse a complete beginner, and thus omitted that. Just made it simple - that you can steal bases.

Oddly softball is closer to earlier (vintage) versions of US Baseball and to Irish Rounders and Welsh Baseball, than modern baseball. Like the underarm pitch, and the relaxed "lets have fun" atmosphere of the game.

The underarm pitching does change the dynamic a little bit. However, according to ESPN's Sports Science, elite softball pitchers and elite baseball pitchers - the ball gets to the batter at roughly the same time so it's not drastically different.

So this is how I’m understanding So if your batter and you hit the ball you run as fast as you can till you get to a base and if you have enough time run to the next and if you don’t hit the ball the catcher chatches it from behind and you have to go again and if you miss 3 times your out and of you the thrower you have to throw the balk and if the girl hits it you have to wait till another person throws it back to you I think I’m stupid this is all probably wrong

That's the gamble! If the ball is caught in the air, you MUST start from the base that you were stood on. You can try and run early, but if the ball is caught in the air, you MUST run back to the base you started at. This might result in the players throwing you out!

I know this is an old video, and probably someone has said this, but you didn't really explain the difference between a force out and a tag out. A force out can only be done when a runner *must* run to a particular base. For instance, if a runner's on first and the batter hits a single, the runner on first *must* run to second base, and the batter *must* run to first base (of course they can keep going after that if they're not forced out). During one of these scenarios, if a fielder is holding the ball and touches the base that the runner must go to, that runner is out. However, if a runner does not have to go to a particular base, the runner must be tagged out. So in the situation I described, if the runner from first makes it to second and keeps going to third, they would have to be tagged out because at that point the runner can go back to second or go to third.

They do, but most base runners will start running immediately when the ball is hit. If the ball is caught in the air, and the player is NOT standing on the base that he started on, the opposing team can throw the ball to that base and he would be out. The tagging up rule prevents an unfair head-start for the runner, if the ball is caught in the air.

So I have some questions. Can you simplify tagging up? I thought if the ball is caught then the batter is automatically out? Also you say base runners must run from the base they are at but is that not always the case? Also hitting the ball between the foul lines means you want to hit the ball between the baselines connecting 2nd and 3rd base right?

Yes, the batter is automatically out if the ball is caught in the air. But any baserunners who are standing on the bases MUST start from the base he's standing on before running. Baserunners will try and leave the base early to try and get to the next base without being thrown out. Sometimes, this backfires spectacularly. The lines between 1st and 3rd base ... anything between those is fair game. Thanks.

A couple more things, if the fielding team gets the ball to the 2nd base then the person running to second base is out but what about the person running from 2nd to 3rd? Are they safe? I’ve heard different things about when you can start running when you’re on the base, some say when the pitcher throws, others say when it’s been hit by the batter, could you clear that one up for me too? @@Soki7000 If there are runners on first and second base and the ball is thrown to second to get the runner out then the runner advancing to third is still in play and can be thrown out. That type of play is called a Force Out. There is a rule that states when a hit is made the batter must leave the batter's box and run to first. There is another rule that states no base can be occupied by two runners. So the runner on first is "forced" to run to second hence the term force out

The explanation of the forced out is wrong. It only applies if the runner has to run for the base because a teammate is on the base behind her, or on first base.

I have some mpre rules about softball whoch might be more confusing for some people Fly ball: if the ball is hit in the air and in the infield and there is less then 2 out, and there are batters on 1 and 2 or 1, 2 and 3. The batter is automatically out and everyone has to go back to there base. Drop 3rd strike: if the batter gets a 3rd strike but the catcher drops it or it the ground befor going into the catchers glove, the batter can run to 1st but only if the base is unoccupied unless there is 2 out. Unoccipied means there can be is no batter on 1st or ibetween 1st and second Foul tip: if the batter hits a foul ball into the catchers glove, this is just a strike and not an out unless its strike 3 in which case it is out unless the catcher drops it in which case drop 3 strike rules apply There also some other rules that hid did not mention If the ball is hit into foul territory but then goes into fair territory on the ground and then stops or soneone toches it in fair territory, it is a fair hit. Also, if you hit the ball into outfield and lands in fair territory and the roles out into foul territory. It is still a fair ball. You are not allowed to go outside the batters box while batting If you get hit by the ball, you get to walk to first When stealing, you can only leave the base after the ball leaves the pitchers hand A coach can call time and all play stops once a play is finsih, though normally the coach waits until after the play has finsihed. You can still run even if the ball is foul if one of the fielders catchers it in foul territory and you must toch the base after the catch is made before you can start running. If you are in the way of the runner (batter runner), and they run into you when you do not have the ball, this is obstruction and the runner is automatically safe. If the runner obstructios the ball from going somewhere, then the runner is out You can also do tripple plays but this is very rare If the batting team bat out of order, the batter or batters on the field is out + the batter that was meant to be there. So if 2 go out of order, that is 2 out. This is only the case though if the oppenent finds this mistake, if your team finds this mistake, no out are givien and you can just swap them for the correct players however you could get fined by doing this on purpose. Any other rules i will add later if i think about them

Ground Rule Double - a ball is hit in play between the foul lines that then bounces over the fence. This prevents the fielding team to try and get an out. An automatic double is awarded to the batter.
