Just a clarifying point: You ARE allowed to reach over the net on a block. You can penetrate into the opponent's court as much as possible as long as you do not contact the ball before your opponent does

ballaholic250 Yes, this would be the only time that it is legal. This doesn't happen all that much as players are penalised for touching the net. I'm fairly sure you can't attack over the net. To keep things simple - I try and keep general rules to make a beginner understand the game. If I was to explain every nuance, we'd be here all day. Ninh Ly Blocking over the net happens quite often in the men's game so to say that you can't reach over on the block is giving the "beginners" false information. I'm not sure why you said it in the first place.

You can also penetrate over the net with your arm and hand as part of your follow through on a spike or shot as long as you initiated contact with the ball on your side of the net and provided you don’t net.

Can compare this to volleyball, and to badminton, in that all three are about hitting a projectile over a high net. Imagine a sport played the same as beach volleyball (and/or volleyball), except that the badminton projectile is used, and each player uses a badminton racket. They must just be careful not to clobber each other.

Papangel1 I'm not entirely sure. I've seen spikes played with one hand, but I'm sure that there's no rule to suggest you can't strike with two. Unless anyone else can wade in on that?!

Papangel1 an attack is only allowed to be one-handed. This is both a rules and practicality issue. "Attacks" are technically only one-handed strikes when the ball is above the plane of the net. One thing that Ninh Ly (LOVE your videos, btw. Cleared up issues Ive had with sports that Ive watched for ages but never played, so didnt fully understand!) did not touch on is the number of infractions: Sets made with two hands must have simultaneous contact and little to no spin Sets made with two hands cannot allow the ball to continue down after the ball has contacted the hands First pass on a team cannot be made with two hands if fingers are used at all if there is any arc on the attacked ball coming over Sets over the net (two hands) must have the setter be facing the opponents court. Attacks cannot be made with fingers causing a "tip" Serves cannot be received with two hands using fingers (like a set) You cannot touch the net (but can play a ball that has touched the net) And there are many others as well

First you say an attack is only allowed to be one-handed, and then you say sets over the net (two hands) must have the setter be facing the opponents court. Every hit that makes the ball go over the vertical plane of the net is an attack hit, that includes the "set over the net". That means you can complete and attack hit with both hands and fingers in a ball setting motion as long as the ball goes perpendicular to your shoulder line.

+Cory Soble the ball can also be played with fingers (tipped) over the net as long as the fingers are rigid and together. it's in the FIVB Beach Volleyball rules (don't feel like checking the exact number)...and I've seen it in practice while watching matches at the Beach Volleyball World Championship 2015 in the Netherlands

+Justus Törmälehto There is nothing in the official FIVB Beach Volleyball rules that tells you you can't. The referee should only make sure the contact with the ball was clean (the ball wasn't caught or thrown). So as long as the ball rebounds cleanly you should be good. As any rules/laws these are up to the referees' interpretation. Some will allow you to hit it overhand with fingers as long as it's clean and not double contacted and others won't allow any finger action on the first hit. In the end it all depends on the referee's understanding of the rules. By the rules you're allowed to receive a serve with fingers overhand. Please look up Case 5.3.2(5.11) in the FIVB BV Casebook: www.fivb.org/EN/Refereeing-Rules/documents/2015-Beach-Volleyball-Rules-Casebook.pdf I'm no expert or veteran. I play indoor volleyball mostly and am just starting out with beach. I've read the official FIVB rules and seen pros play on numerous occasions.I know some people who play beach volleyball in the US and it seems rules are much strictly interpreted here in the US then they are internationally.

I have a question: Ive seen a lot of people doing their first touch only bumping, when overhead pass would be a much better option. Is there such a rule that implies that the first touch must be a bump? Or is there some other reason? (by bumping I mean hitting the ball by hitting with the platform, when both arms are held together)
