Ninh explains - The Rules of Fencing. (Sometimes referred to as ‘Olympic Fencing’,) I have been reliably informed that the Epee is not longer than the other swords, but it is heavier. I believe this was the only error in this video. Fencing is the oldest combat sport in the Olympic games. PLEASE READ: This video took me forever, mainly finding examples in slow motion in order to illustrate the points. (3 HOURS) - Research and finding decent footage. (1 HOUR) - Scripting (1 HOUR) - Recording Audio, Editing, Fixing Levels and EQ (4 HOURS) - Hard Edit, cutting clips and making them fit the audio (2 HOURS) - Soft edit, editing timings, re-find new footage for missing examples. (1 HOUR) - Title screens, colouring and adjustment layers (2 HOURS) - In screen graphics, animations, transitions. (1 HOUR) - Encoding, uploading to KZbin, editing closed captions, adding tags, custom thumbnail, updating on website, pre-load on social media. TOTAL TIME - 15 HOURS TO MAKE A 6 MINUTE VIDEO!!! So if and when you make a suggestion - please be considerate that these things don't take just two minutes to make.

I really want to try fencing, do you have any tips for me? My mom doesn't seem interested in the concept and my friend said it won't do my future any good. She also thinks it's boring but I have to disagree with that. I already know how your feet are supposed to be and how to move them, and how to attack. I want to learn epee because your whole body is capable of getting hit.

As a competitive saber fencer, I can say that the video is almost completely accurate (except for the epee thing, but you already addressed that.) So, you do this for real. How often do you see in movies people dueling with lightsabers, old medieval swords, Klingon weapons, or etc. and just want to scream because it is cryingly obvious the opponents are trying to hit each other's _weapons_ instead of each other? 🤢

I've competed in two of the three styles in fencing ( foil and Epee). In the beginning I favored foil . Later I did Epee . Tried Sabre but didn't care for it . I've a lot of respect for Sabre fencers but my issue with it - is the lack of Exchanges . It reminds me of two rams . They charge then their horns hit . I mean no disrespect it's just (my) perspective.

Very nostalgic for me watching this video, one of the best stories I used to tell people when I use to do fencing. Is that I was fortunate enough to represent New Zealand in Épée in the under 18 South Pacific champs that was being held Sydney. As happy as I was hearing the news of being selected there was only one problem... I didn't know till later that The day of the tournament was also the same day that I promised to take my Best friend to the prom🤣. I didn't want to let her down so I promised that I will be back in time. So the day of the tournament began and I was nervous as hell considering this was the first time I ever represented a country in anything. I managed to win 3 out of 5 pool stages. I did get eliminated early in the final stages and I came 35th out of around 70 people, so pretty good in my eyes. As soon as I got eliminated I had rush out of the arena, get changed, pack everything, then rush to the airport and it would be a 3 hour flight to Christchurch. As soon I landed me and my dad had to drive another 2 hours to Timaru (at this point it was around 8am New Zealand time). I got home and had a snooze for hour, then later I had to shave and get changed Into suit on get ready to go over to my mate's house to go to the prom later that day...honestly this story could be turned into a low budget Disney movie 😂. Sadly I don't fence anymore but I had some times good along the way.

I remember doing 1 week of epee camp and a fun trick I did while using my left hand to fight against right handed players is when they try to lunge or extend their arm out to hit you I immediately jump back while also poking at their extended arm to get a point. I was an amateur against other amateurs when I was doing it and that trick worked pretty well till I went up against a pro for fun and had my ass beat since my arrogance got the best of me instead of being even more cautious than I should be
@TheNoiseySpectator
@TheNoiseySpectator Жыл бұрын
Interesting. I have a question about that move; Had a left-hander used such a move in an actual duel with double sided swords, could it have afforded you the opportunity into the opponent's fighting arm, or even cut it off, all together? 🤔 Yes, I am really asking.
@TheNoiseySpectator
@TheNoiseySpectator Жыл бұрын
I mean I can see where your left, fighting arm would then be outside the opponent's right, striking arm while they were following through with their lunge. They might not be able to pull their blade back in time to contact your blade, as you swing inward. But I am not sure.
@jackbrunato8960
@jackbrunato8960 Жыл бұрын
@@TheNoiseySpectator from the SCA prospective this move would be considered a cut but would probably land you with a warning if the jumping movement wasn't controlled. It wouldn't dismember anyone but it would disable the opponents arm. Anyway if you have the ability to cut an arm you probably had the opportunity to kill your opponent.

Since I've spared before I think I'll try epee first. So thanks for the clear explanations. I once saw some historic fencers grading up and they did more than these three. Like sword and dagger and such. The one testing them even challenged them with different styles and regions vs each other. It was amazing to see.

Epee is the most fun and strategic imo, ofc you dont have the right of way rule, but this makes it only more complex. While the others might be faster, you have way more options in epee. Even if you attack, you can`t be sure the opponentt will parry, because he isnt forced to by the rules. You also don`t know where he is aiming to strike, so you have to be even more concerned and smart about which part you expose. Speed and reactions are key to every form of fencing, but in epee you have to combine these with stategic movement, anticipation and reading of your opponent more than the others imo, which creates a very fun mental battle of baiting, exposing and punishing movements combined with the physical aspect of the sport.

In other words we like to fake out our opponents before they do the same to us. Spoken from an epee
@alexp.6408

Epee? The most fun? LOL. I've seen several high level, 15 touch epee bouts have the first period skipped for noncombativity, and then end with scores somewhere in the region of 5-3 after a riveting 6 minutes of bouncing back and forth. Foil is the superior weapon, sabre is pirate fun times, both are better than epee.

For those unaware, it's a reference to "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull". When I heard the word "riposte", I immediately thought of the swordfight between Cate Blanchett's character and Shia Labeouf's character on two jeeps in the middle of the Amazon jungle.

It's also a penalty if your guard touches your opponents body. Coz otherwise, people might try to hurt their opponent during play to gain an advantage. Also, when body to body contact is made a halt is called, fencers distance themselves and play is resumed. In foil, if the guards are locked against each other (like what you see in movies), a halt is called, fencers distance themselves then play is resumed. In epee, it's not halted when that occurs. If the time ends on a tie, one fencer is randomly chosen to have priority. Play is resumed for one minute and unless the opponent scores one hit, the player with priority wins.

Whilst those are correct, I wouldn't explain every rule in a beginners video. It'd just confuse the hell out of them. There's many other things I could have mentioned about Fencing, but didn't for ease of explanation.

I remember for the time I did fencing with an épée that a hit was canceled if your body was beyond your opponents body. Can you tell me if I remember well ?
@threeletteragent
@threeletteragent 4 жыл бұрын
@@kaalbrak When you pass your opponent, a halt is called. If you turn around and touch your opponent before the halt is called, it doesn't count, but if your opponent aims their sword back and hits you before halt, it does count (as long as they don't turn their body as well). This adds an extra dimension to flèche attacks (attacks where you make a dash past your opponent, aiming to hit them along the way) because if you fail to hit your opponent, you leave yourself extremely vulnerable, because fencers train specific attacks designed for hitting someone behind them.

I’ve been fencing epee and Sabre my entire life (started when I was six) and to me this is an incredibly simplified explanation, like putting butter on bread simple. Now I’m seeing comments that say fencing is complicated. I guess from an outside perspective it’s a lot to take in at first but once you get it, it’s really pretty elementary.
