To all new to Baseball: Most of the game is played between the pitcher, catcher, and the opposing batter. The pitcher's specific skill is to make the ball difficult to hit. Major league pitchers throw many different types of pitches that move suddenly as they arrive near the batter. Learning that make each game more interesting. There's a psychology that goes into which pitches to throw and in what order.

This is gloriously well done. It covers basically every fundamental concept (and a few less common ones) in 3 minutes. I already know the game well, but this is one of the best examples I've seen of someone trying to explain it efficiently. If I tried, it would take me 30 minutes.

It's fairly simple. Instead of standing at wickets, you stand at home base, and instead of the ball being allowed to go anywhere when hit, it has to be hit by the batter into the cone that is the 90-degree right angle between first and third bases. Instead of running back and forth between the wickets after hitting the ball, you run to and touch each of the four bases (the last base being called home base) before you score. You can stop on a base if you think you will run the risk of getting tagged out or thrown out (except for home base after hitting the ball, you have to run to first), and you can try to run to another base (steal it) while the pitcher is preparing to throw at the next batter(s) or only move once the ball has been hit. The objective of the pitching team is to strike out or tag out every batter that comes up, and they have to knock out three of the opposing team to get their chance at batting.

[going through comments] I think the reason baseball confuses a lot of people is because the notorious (I didn't want to say "diehard") fans on twitter, facebook etc. don't give new fans a chance to learn the game. I find they always expect you to magically know everything about every player on every team in history, and also know all there is to know about advanced statistics.

There are a few things that are wrong. Well, not wrong really, just incomplete. 1) A batter can only attempt to steal first base if the Catcher drops a pitch that would have been a 3rd strike. 2) You didn't really elaborate on the difference between thrown out and tagged out. A runner can only be thrown out on "forced runs," meaning the runner HAS to run because there's a runner on the base behind him. If a runner is attempting a double or is stealing a base, touching the base isn't enough, the player himself has to be tagged. 3) You forgot to mention that if a fly ball is caught, not only is the batter out, but all runners that are off the bases have to retreat back to their original base or be thrown out. If they stand on the base until AFTER the ball is caught, however, they can then run and it's the same as stealing a base. 4) You didn't go into the Infield Fly Rule, but you can't really be expected to know how that works when half the umpires don't.
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 9 жыл бұрын
Theriot6592 Yes, thank for stopping by. I'm aware of these rules - but to explain them exactly like that probably would have confused a complete beginner so I tried to keep it as simple as I could. Thanks for stopping by, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
@willoughbykrenzteinburg
@willoughbykrenzteinburg 9 жыл бұрын
Theriot6592 1) A batter does not "steal" first base. It's a strikeout (for the batter and the pitcher) and scored as either a wild pitch by the pitcher or a passed ball by the catcher. It is never scored as a stolen base. 2) Regarding force outs (not "forced runs")....you said, " the runner HAS to run because there's a runner on the base behind him." This is not necessarily true. There could be a runner on second and third (with first base empty). The runner on third is not forced to run home EVEN IF the runner from second is running to third. The runner on second is not being forced, ergo - the runner on third is not being forced. As a runner, there is only a potential force if every base preceding the one you are on is occupied. So, for there to be a force at home, the bases would need to be loaded. Batter would force the runner from first to second - who would in turn force the runner on second to third, who would in turn force the runner on third to home. 4) Every umpire knows how the infield fly rule works, but you are right; that explanation is not necessary in this context. These are the basics.

Nice video, really clear and concise. One minor note though, the active roster size in MLB is 25, not 40. The 40 man roster is sort of like the available pool of players from which a team can select 25 to compete for a given game. The rest of the players on the 40 man roster usually play in AAA or at another minor league level.

For anyone who is drawn to comparisons with cricket, this is the thing: Baseball: outs come regularly and are easier to achieve, whereas runs are rare and very much harder to achieve. This was a very good intro to baseball, especially for such a short video. You made a mistake about the hitter being able to steal first base. The hitter can advance to first base when a third strike is missed by the catcher and first base is unoccupied (unless there are two out.) Otherwise, good job!

At the beginning, there are 25 players on the MLB roster. The 40 man roster can include minor leaguers too.
@ConnerMello2
@ConnerMello2 8 жыл бұрын
Yep. The 40-man roster includes 25 players that will be with the major league team when they play, while the other 15 either be in the minors or injured. Those players are protected from the slew of trade rules that are attached to minor league players. They're basically the best players in your system that you want to protect. However, at the beginning, teams are allowed to expand their active roster to 40, which gives any team the opportunity to immediately play any of the 15 guys they choose to leave off the active roster.

I think baseball is a sport that, in order to gain a full understanding of it, you really have to watch a game, and have things explained to you as the game goes. That's probably why a lot of people watch this video, and still don't get it. 0:53 If the batter goes for a bunt on two strikes, and the ball goes into foul territory, he is out. 2:14 That's called a 'dropped third strike,' and it only applies when the catcher fails to catch the ball when the batter is on two strikes.

Baseball was NOT first played in England. They played and still play the game of Rounders which is played on a circular field with ten "stations". It ws a popular game in the 1600's and there are still clubs today. The rules of baseball ere not compiled until the 1840's and in NY. These rules were used in Australia ans England soon after.

As a lover of baseball, I very much appreciate the well illustrated and concise summary of the rules presented here. I'm sure my friend trying to understand the game will very much like it also. The only things I feel should have been explained that weren't are: The infield fly rule: Any ball that would predictably is caught by a fielder in the infield when two bases or more are occupied are always considered caught and cannot become double plays or triple plays, only one out is tallied in favor of the defense. This rule is something very important for the balance of the game. Also related is the force out rule: In the event a runner is forced to advance due to base he was previously occupying being taken by a teammate as runners round around the diamond, a fielder needs only to step on the base said runner will be forced to advance to, provididing said fielder is holding the ball, to force that runner out. Edit: And now I read EaglesRugby message and realize you addressed these concerns, sorry for the spiel on my part ~.~'

Ways to get on base in baseball (FA hitter getting to any base safely) Hit (A hit is a general term, but in baseball it means a batter hits the ball, and reaches any base safely. If a hitter hits the ball, tags first base and tries for second base but gets tagged out, it still counts as a hit) Home run (A hit that lets the batter and all runners on base score) Walk (The home plate umpire determines when a pitcher throws a strike, which is a hittable pitch, or a ball an impossible or difficult pitch to hit. The strike zone, the guideline for the judgement call for the umpire is usually the width of home plate and between the batters knees and chest. If a pitcher throws 4 balls to a single batter, they get to go to first base for free Error (If a batter hits a ball on the ground or in the air, and would be an easy out for the defending team but a defender bobbles or drops the ball allowing the runner to get on base, it is an error. Not a hit) Hit by pitch (If a batter or any part of his uniform is hit by a pitch, the runner is free to go to first base) Fielder's Choice (If a batter hits the ball, and a fielder makes the choice to throw it to another base to get another runner out instead of the batter, the batter got on by fielder's choice. Not a hit or an error) Dropped 3rd strike (If a batter looks or swings at strike three but the catcher does not catch it, the batter may run to first. If the catcher cannot pick it up and throw it to first before the batter touches first base, the batter is safe to stay at first base. Not a hit) Intentional walk (The same thing as a walk, but done intentionally. Most of the times these are done to set up double plays for the defense or not give the chance to a big hitter to hit in a lot of runs)

You need to make a correction. Baseball teams only have 25 players on a gameday roster. In Major League Baseball up to 40 may be under contract, but 15 are sent to minor league affiliates. In September, the final month of the regular season and after the minor league season is over, gameday rosters expand. Teams may then have any amount of players from 25-40 on the roster. This way younger prospects get game time for next season or even possibly to make the playoff roster.
