This must be the best exhaust fitting instructional / review / sound test on KZbin. I have a pair of SP Engineering (UK manufacture) short stubby carbon slip ons for the same reasons... foot clearance, access to the swinging arm / chain and brake caliper. They also sound better and make the wheel easier to clean.

Hi Jonathan, another quality video = well done! The pavement on that patch of road near/under the bridge is a great place to test if anything is going to vibrate loose, looks similar to things I see here in Chicago. On my 2017, I’ve completed my LED turn signals and BlasterX tail light install, replaced factory cans with Vance & Hines Urban Brawlers (with baffles), highly reflective rim tape, reflector removal, factory seat swap for Sargent, and just swapped out the windscreen for the Puig (dark smoke). Your video’s have helped out a TON, so thank you for that and hope to see you on the road! BTW - I had the X-grip for my iPhone 8 on the bike but swapped it out for the spring loaded cradle holder... makes it easier to use on the bike without having the side buttons pushed by the grippers of the x-grip.

Possibly the best exhaust sound test on YT. Very Pro. Gonna guess the euro 4 catalytic converter is muffling a lot of the exhaust note all by itself. Going from stock to straight-through pipes, one would traditionally expect more increase in Db. I would agree; a bike you are going to tour on is better off being quiet-ish. Don't want to anger the natives.

About exhausts: I like it. They could be more louder, but, as you said, must to take catalyzer off. They looks very good in the bike. About your recording: is the best comparison, time-line history, following thoughts that I've ever seen. If you use this features on your job, congratulations. Really great quality video. The audio quality is so important on exhaust clips and that's often forgotten. I must say, I think it'd be good to follow-up with (or tack on) some WOT samples, as those are going to be where you see the largest dB and sound difference. With the mufflers completely removed from my N1K it's not that loud with gentle throttle application/mid-RPM. You may be in the break-in period, but it'd be nice to see some WOT/high RPM runs when practical to do so, as I that's where you're going to see the biggest difference in noise.
@JonLong6 жыл бұрын
That's a good point. I wanted to do some higher rev tests, but those will have to wait till after the engine break in.

Great video! Would strongly suggest picking up a spring puller to place the exhaust springs on the exhaust hooks. I use a Motion Pro 08-0127. They are cheap and you won't beat yourself up. Only thing I would suggest. Great job!

A spring puller would have been a big help. One was supposed to be included with the exhaust system, but was accidentally left out. Anyone else that gets this system should receive a spring puller.

@JonLong6 жыл бұрын
That's exciting! No need for a power commander w/ the Leo Vince, or for most slip-on exhausts. I may do a video on break-in, but the short answer is to trust the owner's manual. Keep the rpms under the prescribed limit, vary the rpms while riding, don't use heavy throttle, and run through all the gears. Change your oil at the prescribed intervals, and you should be good!

Did you notice anymore power or less restriction after installing the new pipes?
@JonLong6 жыл бұрын
I haven’t noticed a power difference, but I’m just finishing the break-in process of the bike, so I haven’t used 100% of the available power yet. I don’t think you’ll see noticeable gains with just a slip-on (any brand) due to the restrictive catalytic converter and chamber that stays on the bike. If you combined the slip-on with an aftermarket header, then made the necessary adjustments to your fueling, you’d see some more noticeable improvements in power.

Nice video! Really helpful, my Scorpion carbon slipons are soon going on the bike. Ive seen some kawa bikes and older bikes on this ninja 1000 have a servomotor under the seat with a cable attached to the exhaust. Seems your bike did not have something like that ?
@85waspnest6 жыл бұрын
As I understand it, post 2015 bikes aren't fitted with the exhaust flapper valve.
@MrPlod9996 жыл бұрын
Models 2014 and after don't have the exhaust valve...and no servo under the seat. If you fit an exhaust that doesn't have the valve, simply remove the cables. The servo can remain functional so no error code shows up. There are gizmos to replace a redundant servo.

How much is a set of those? I'm looking at the Akrapovic Titan and Akrapovic Carbon (It's what Kawasaki recommends over here), and it's $2000+ for either. That's Too much for slip-on's in my opinion. The LeoVince looks gorgeous though. Better then the Akrapovic by far.
@marcosv29586 жыл бұрын
Hello Jon, First of all, congrats for the videos. I've watched them all, being a new owner myself. As others have stated, the sound difference seems minimal, and I would probably go with the slipons route for the same benefits you mentioned, especially the facts that they would be less in the way of the feet. However, I was wondering if you tested the sound level without any cans at all ? What does it look like Stock vs. Nothing vs. LeoVince ?
@JonLong6 жыл бұрын
Congrats on the new bike! I did not test the bike without the mufflers simply because I had no intention of running the bike without mufflers. The Vance and Hines slip on for this bike would likely sound similar to running no mufflers, since they are just a straight pipe with no sound deadening. I’ll have an updated sound video in the next few weeks showing how the pipes sound after they’ve broken in a bit.

Hi Jonathan. How easy is it to take out the DB killers and to put back?
@JonLong6 жыл бұрын
There is a single 4mm bolt that you remove to take out the dB killer. They are a tight fit, and I found its easiest to put the handle of a long screwdriver inside the insert, and then use the lip of the handle to tap the insert out from the inside. They slide back in very easily, though.

The stock system on this bike is so restrictive and crammed with 'cat' that I'd run a full system replacement. Slip-ons will bring only minor sound for a pretty decent chunk of money. A full system 4-2-1 will drop around 20 pounds of weight.

Unless you remove the catalytic converter box, the bike will not get louder. It acts like a big empty muffler, because the actual catalyst material is only a puck in the pipe pre-cat. Which acts like decibel killer.
@JonLong5 жыл бұрын
The stock cat definitely muffles a good amount of noise. But now that my slip-on has broken in, it’s quite a bit louder than stock (with the DB killers out).

The dB meter shows the volume increases more than your speakers may indicate. There are noticeable differences, especially when the dB killer is removed. And now that the muffler has broken in, it has gained some additional volume. I’ll likely post an update to this video with and without the dB killers. But as I mentioned in the video, the slip ons solve other problems with the stock exhaust other than just changing the sound.

Why would I buy this bike? It has really budget accessories. Like the heated grips? Its not even integrated into the menu system. Just a weird looking dongle mounted to the handlebar. No comfort seat. You pay for the brand lol
@JonLong6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you wouldn’t buy this bike, but everybody has different needs and wants. From my perspective, it represents a good value. A powerful, comfortable, and versatile sport touring bike with great LED lighting, advanced ABS and traction control with IMU, fully adjustable front suspension and remote preload adjuster for the rear, and well-integrated removable luggage. I couldn’t find those features in any other bike at this price. I don’t consider Kawasaki one of those brands where you’re “paying for the brand.”
