Continuing on with the N64, after about 4 months of waiting I have finally managed to get myself an Ultra HDMI kit! So its time to do modding and restoration to a Nintendo 64 (N64). In this video I will show the process to install an UltraHDMI kit, a Voultar RGB Kit and a region free cart slot. Time to do a retro restore!
In addition we will compare the HDMI output to composite in several very popular games!
To pick up one of these 3D printed cartridge slots, you can pick on up here:

I think the thing about the UltraHDMI mod, and this is something they pointed out in the My Life In Gaming N64 video, is that it is doing some inverse processing that largely removes the native blurring that the N64 applies to its video output, leaving you with much sharper pixels than is otherwise possible on native hardware (emulation is obviously a different animal). This is most evident in your side by side comparison on the star fields in the background of many of your gameplay captures. Even on RGB, there is some ghosting or ringing around the individual stars, while in the UltraHDMI output the stars are each razor sharp points that stand out from the black background. It really does appear to be completely independent of video noise or brightness levels. The look that one prefers is going to be up to their personal taste.

Honestly this was a great video. Pretty underated. You covered all points, and those are some nice close up shots working on the motherboard. Well explained and detailed. Its my first time buying an n64 and I did my research, i might go for the jungle green console and mario kart, golden eye, and smash bros just to start off. Im very excited for the n64 experience.

RGB to any type of CRT is better than either to an HDTV. The way CRTs render an image is more forgiving, and n64 games were designed for a crt. The only thing that might really be better would be UltraHDMI with hdmi to vga connected to a CRT desktop monitor.
@syncmonism
@syncmonism 4 ай бұрын
The way CRTs display the edges of 3d objects and other details is fantastic, but good luck finding a CRT which can come anywhere close to a good modern LCD in terms of size, brightness, and color accuracy. I know a lot of people use those old professional broadcast quality CRT monitors, but they're friggin tiny. I guess it's okay if you don't mind having your face two feet away from the screen, but a larger display is way better for multiplayer games or for taking turns playing single player games. For me, a large part of the appeal of these old console games is the social aspect. Having a system which plugs into the HDMI port of a modern TV also means it's easy for me to take the system to other people's places. Unless you can find a good large late generation CRT (and have enough space for it), I think a good LCD TV is the clearly better option, with OLEDs being even better still, and the super low latency of OLEDs will be pretty much indistinguishable from the effectively zero latency of CRTs.

HDMI all the way for me. I used to be fine playing my SNES games either through emulation or the original console. Once I got ahold of my Super NT however, that all changed. It plays games near perfection with no input latency to be aware of. To top it all off, everything looks nice and crisp in HDMI 😎. I feel the same way about the N64. Once I get the HDMI mod done to it (which will be through you my good friend 😉), I don't think I could ever go back to anything else. Great video as always dude! 👌

The best way to describe the difference with RGB and HDMI is that they both look sharp but RGB has a sunglasses effect. Overall picture just looks a tad darker than the bright and sunny HDMI mod.

Nice video and comparison! Personaly, I had 3 N64 and kept the one that wasnt moddable easly by mistake. I was sadden when I discovered my board wasnt compatible with voultar mod. Right now I use SVideo on a CRT but would go the RGB solution if I had the choice. If I wanted it in HD I would grab a OSSC instead of paying the by price of the N64 HDMI. For sure the hdmi solution might worth it if you love N64, it has a lot of options 😁

Darshe thanks dude! Too bad on not keeping the right one. I dont disagree at all... it's all about what you want for $500 you can get an ossc and rgb modded console and use the ossc on other consoles too. However, if you want the best ultrahdmi is the highest quality picture with the most options. I think your statement that there is a ton of options is spot on with the n64.

LOL! Looks like we have the exact same ESD mat and I’ve been trying to get one of those push-down dispenser bottles for a while. :) Done quite a few UltraHDMI and Voultar RGB boards with region-free cart trays myself too... actually HUNDREDS of UltraHDMI and cart trays (not exaggerating). ;) I 3D print so many region-free cart trays that it’s keept my Creality CR-10 busy for more than a year (Spring 2017) and I typically do large ~50ct batches of UltraHDMI within a week or so. Super easy/quick when you can batch them! Just subscribed to your channel. Good production that goes in-depth without going into the weeds as I am prone to do. You have a bright future! I’m too lazy to step up my game by even taking the video off my phone to edit it elsewhere! I haven’t lifted the RAM since one of my earliest disassemblies since I always lift from the back now (cartridge port side). Seems to work consistently with a large sample size so I always suggest it. Also, the cartridge port pops right off if you want to clean inside/underneath. There is usually a ton of flux left over from manufacturing which collects a lot of dust, lint, and debris that falls through the cart slot. You want to lift it evenly or else you’ll break the plastic wings on either side (something else I learned very early on ;)). I also suggest folding the FFC between the notches before you solder the wing that goes to the PIF chip for reading your controller input. It seems that you skipped the in-game reset feature that was added with a later firmware. Because it was added later the connection is not on the FFC even though it can also be tapped off the same PIF chip where you get controller input. Marshall did revise the UltraHDMI board itself to have a hole for connecting this. In order to maintain the disconnect-ability of the kit I add a right angle pin header to the UltraHDMI board but the bottom is totally solder-masked which can make it frustrating if you aren’t doing them all at once like I usually do. I pair that with a premade jumper wire with DuPont M-F connectors, which I attach directly to the reset switch and route out by the AV Multi-Out. The IGR connection is actually a repurposing of the older board’s test point, which means you can now use the Reset button to clear settings/reset defaults. In-Game Reset is awesome for people with the cheaper Everdrive 64 that only saves your progress to the SD card if you reset before powering off. It pairs well with other flash cards too by giving you a way to return to the menu and pick a different game without getting up. Love it! Makes me wonder what other cool stuff he might be able to add with future FW updates.

Emmett, much appreciated on subscribing and dropping so much knowledge! I actually did the IGR and didnt show it... I have no idea why that hit he cutting room floor, but I didnt include it. Its crazy... I had never lifted the ram before, but sure enough it happened on this one. Good tip on lifting from the back. I will absolutely try that as I have a N64 sitting in my que to knock out! Thanks again and I will have to check out some of your HDMI N64 videos!

RockerGaming No problem. Yeah, the RAM thing is a crap-shoot since you can’t see under the heat sink until you remove it, but lifting from the back (cart connector side) seems to be consistently safe. Some have one RAMBUS chip; some have two; some early revs are securely attached with two full rows of pins; and, of course, there is some variance to how strongly the thermal pads adhere... all of which factor into your chances if you don’t lift from the back. I now understand why so many guides tell people to unscrew the heat sink blocks and leave them on the chips, but that’s not possible for extremely late revisions (stamped heatsink; no blocks). It happens to us all though: Even GameTechUS accidentally lifted the RAM when Jason filmed his early installs. The legs on that side are all ground anyway, so it doesn’t even matter if they bridge when soldering back down. Glad that they pretty consistently sheer from the pad instead of sheering off the chip or lifting traces from the board!

Thank you for this graphics comparison. I would like to agree with you when you say RGB and HDMI do not make a significant difference. You're going to spend that kind of money on a mod like that, I'd suggest spending it on an OSSC adapter. That way, you can use it for ALL your other retro consoles. I played Starfox 64 on my NES classic and it looks just as good as this ultrahdmi mod imo. The problem with hdmi for low rez 3d games, enhancing graphics for a console like n64, it doesn't make a big difference. But for a console like dreamcast, the 2D and 3D graphics and higher frame rate make games worth playing in HDMI.

Hey great video! Just watched sorry for the late reply 4 years later haha but I have a question. I've been in the design planning stages with modding my N64 and one thing that I almost never see done in these comparisons is a native s-video out on a CRT vs RGB or HDMI. Because yeah composite is terrible but a video is usually much closer imo and makes the decision to alter (plus the cost of altering) much less desirable. What do you think about S-video compared to RGB? Thanks!
@kaneda010
@kaneda010 5 жыл бұрын
I appreciate you taking the time to show these comparisons, as it's something I've started to wonder about. I run my N64 via S-Video thru a Framemeister, and am already really happy with the picture quality. But if I wanted to go further, do I go for an RGB mod to increase the clarity via the Framemeister, or go the UltraHDMI route instead? Judging from this video, the RGB method seems perfectly legit if I decide to upgrade. Subscribed!
@RockerGaming
@RockerGaming 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment and subscribing, much appreciated! I am planning another video to cover this topic in more depth analysis so definitely check that out. There are a couple of other RBG solutions out there that I plan to feature as well, but for the most part if you have the framemeister you are already doing much better than most! I think RGB will give you a really nice boost and for the most part RGB modded N64's are not to costly.
@The_SegaHolic
@The_SegaHolic 6 жыл бұрын
Framemeister has gamma adjustments. Also, the Frameister looks a tad soft. A +1 on the sharpness could have helped. There is so much adjustments for the Framemeister can can affect output, it'll make your head spin. Like the various deinterlacing modes that can also affect picture qualit, and unless you do research on each mode, you won't know exactly what those modes do- as the title for the modes aren't exactly intuitive. For the price of HDMI.... You could buy a Framemeister and get high quality RGB with your other retro consoles. I'd say it's a slam dunk just to get a Framemeister. BTW, great delicate work on soldering that ribbon cable. Almost unbelievable with the ribbon's heat tolerance.
@RockerGaming
@RockerGaming 5 жыл бұрын
The Sega Holic I agree with everything you said there. I am planning to do another one of these videos once the Tim Worthington n64 rgb mod shows up. I'll show some more of the framemeister settings for that video to add more clarity to the setting used. Hopefully in the video that came across that framemeister was the route I would choose unless I demanded the highest quality video and more convenience.

When I look at comparison videos between HDMI modded systems and RGB modded systems, the video with the HDMI mod actually looks a little too bright and washed out a lot of the time. However, I'm using a very good modern LCD TV and also a high end VA monitor, both of which are very bright to begin with, so this probably has a lot to do with that. An HDMI mod which doesn't set the gamma so high might be a good idea for use with modern, properly calibrated LCD or OLED displays. I personally have an RGB modded system with a RAD2X adapter that I use on my TV, and it looks fantastic. In any case, RGB modded systems seem to be so close in quality to HDMI modded systems that they're probably going to be the much better choice for most people. You do have to consider the cost of whatever adapters and cables you're going to need to use with the RGB mod when considering the price difference, but even with that, the HDMI mods are likely to be a lot more expensive.

It doesn't look like you're using the sharp pixels setting with the UltraHDMI. Set the output resolution to match the native resolution of your TV's panel, or set 720p if you have a 4K TV. Make sure your TV doesn't zoom/crop the screen slightly (simulated overscan). Set the "Sharp Pixels" setting to "integer" or "integer+". Do you know if the VI De-Blur option is on? That has a dramatic effect on 2D elements.

How much does it cost on average to get a HDMI port modded into the N64? I have a Watermellon Red N64 I got used in rough shape and kinda gross, but runs perfectly fine. Instead of just letting it collect dust I was considering looking for someone to mod it up as mentioned before. Any info you can share would be 100% appreciated. I live in Canada and can't find anything on the subject locally is why I've come here to you. Great video btw! XP

Thank you very much! The kit runs approximtely $150 and you can get it from game-tech.us. Installation normally runs around $60. The quoted prices are all in USD, but hopefully it gives you a better idea of what to expect. If you're looking for someone in Canada to help you out, I would reachout to Leon Kiriliuk - leonki@gmail.com He does great work!!

I would love to do this (hdmi mod) but i wouldn't want to take the chance in case i ruined it. I never soldered anything. Also wouldn't chance it on my n64 as I had mines since the 90's so if i were to do it i would probably buy a console specifically for the mod.

Looked to me like the RGB footage was in limited range setting (16-235) rather than full range (0-255). While I'd still opt for HDMI, I don't think this was a fair comparison.

Hard to sell RGB as a money-saver in the USA when you have to get expensive hardware to properly utilize it. :( Even if you get an OSSC instead you still have to get good cables and get a compatible TV (many TVs are problematic).
@RockerGaming
@RockerGaming 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah agree with the OSSC. Thats the exact reason I went the framemeister. I figured it was a better bet for compatibility, especially with capture cards, which was a big deal for me as I do captures for the channel. Cost saver likely isnt the right word, but worth the extra cost is what I should have said. To me it is worth the extra cost if you have multiple RGB systems in your set-up. I would say even 3 RGB only systems (i.e. Saturn, N64, and Genesis) makes it worth while. Having said that let there be no doubt HDMI is by far the most convenient and had the best picture. Thanks for subscribing and dropping comments! I have 1 more n64 video in the works and I really appreciate your knowledge on the N64!!

RockerGaming No problem! I love absorbing as much as I can from like-minded people like you and really appreciate your willingness to share. It only makes sense to give a little back with my experiences, so I hope it’s been useful. I mean, few people would end up doing this kind of stuff without also being enthusiasts, so we automatically have that in common. :) Eagerly awaiting your next video! I have a couple 4:3 LCDs that are natively RGBS through VGA but, regrettably, I don’t have a Framemeister or an RGB CRT (PVM, BVM, etc). :( Never even checked to see if those LCDs support 240p. I do have an OSSC but, of course, I need to find a compatible TV since none of mine support 3x or 5X for 720p or 1080/1200p. I end up using a set of HD Retrovision cables and adapters to use most of my RGB-capable systems on late model Trinitron CRTs, which is why I haven’t run off to grab a more compatible TV for the OSSC. Even so, 2x OSSC at 480p makes my 240p consoles look significantly better on the ol’ 1080p LCD. Biggest issue, as you mentioned, is capturing. I have a couple old Elgato Game Capture HD boxes with HDMI, component, composite, and S-video and I usually can’t capture either HDMI or 240p component using OSSC or HD Retrovision. That’s why my Neo Geo repair video was using Genesis Model 1/Master System composite AV cables and looked like garbage despite capturing direct-feed. :( Speaking of which, my new roommate at the time saw the AES connected to the living room TV with OSSC and HD Retrovision and couldn’t believe what he was seeing from such an old game system! Too bad I couldn’t capture that. :)

I agree with the RGB mod. I would exercise caution with the pound cable. There are some very well documented issues with it. Not sure if it has been resolved, but I know when they came out there were some pretty big issues with them. If your TV supports it, check out the HD retrovision cables.

@RockerGaming
@RockerGaming 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry mate disagree with you on this one. The signal used by the rad2x isnt as clean as it would be via rgb or via ultrahdmi, it would use a composite signal and not rgb. Further a framemeister was used to upscale the rgb which is far superior to the mclassic. All in all the rad2x + mclassic is a step down from what is presented here, however, all options here are more costly adding that as a 3rd option would be interesting. However if cost was the limitation I'd say go ossc + rgb
@kilo1265
@kilo1265 3 жыл бұрын
@@RockerGaming But you can RGB mod an N64 and use a RAD2X. Technically speaking the signal probably isn't as clean as RGB into the Framemeister, but I doubt very many non-tech savvy people can even tell the difference. It's good enough for me honestly because I don't want to blow so much money on a mod that I could easily screw up for a console I hardly use. And other up-scalers would make more of a mess of wires than I already have.

Pretty sure HDMI isn’t any better than RGB what so ever RGB already provides maximum separation of audio and all colours used to produce every on screen colour HDMI was introduced for 1080p resolution and now even higher bandwidth for 4k , these consoles are not 1080P. It’s just one of the newest inputs and carries both sound and picture through a single cable , that’s it .

It’s not worth the time to mod a n64 .. unless your bored and you like doing this stuff.. the only diff is you said it it’s just a bit brighter and it’s a bit smoother .. Now and days with all the emulations the game gets fixed.. I built an arcade machine and I’ve got multiple games of just 1 game just to have the comparisons and just bcuz whoever plays it usually goes with a specific console bcuz of there child hood so I download multiples of the same games.. games where ment to be fun and not necessarily bcuz if graphics. When graphix got pushed hard then game play started to suffer there was no more good stories there was no more I guess what they use to call “King of kids” in the school yard or just a .”badass” bcuz you could beat ghost and goblins or some other ridiculous hard ass game. Kids didn’t know nor did the parents what bits where and why it mattered.. even though graphix where being pushed a lil back then it was more so of the exclusives that turned people on to Nintendo or Sega. Then when PlayStation came out it was a big diff then Microsoft.. and the rest is history... This was a good video I would do this though just bcuz I’m board and I like to tinker with things like this, I got a lot of n64 as well as other consoles just for these reasons🤟🏾👍🏼✊🏽 keep up the videos on mods you did a good job explaining in depth .
