Fun fact about the Zelda Collector's Edition - it was the first time you could play the games in PAL regions at 60hz. Normally games _from_ PAL regions get speed-adjusted for export (like the WipEout series), but for some reason, many Japanese companies didn't bother to do it the other way. It definitely mattered to them though, as Capcom would speed adjust games like Test Drive 5 to run at the correct speed when importing. Anyway, I still have my copy from way back when. I got it at Toys R Us in a bundle with Pokémon Colosseum, Pokémon Box, the GBA cable, Monster Jam, Scorpion King and the Zelda set. It also came with a really sweet bag to hold it all in! It was also like, £100 or £120. Toys R Us was like that sometimes. I remember them having N64s for £99, but the games were £63,99 (initially...). Funny, because they cost that much now, yet people are more prepared to pay for them at the price, even including inflation. Seems like a racket to me.

@@severeerror52 That's not true. Most games would show a 50 or 60 Hz prompt when you started them. A few games (like the Mario Party games) would exclusively run in 50 Hz mode and a few games (like Metroid Prime 2) only supported 60 Hz mode. If a game only supported 60 Hz mode it would get a big red "60 Hz only" mark on the box cover to indicate this. The Wii includes a 50 Hz option in the menu, though I don't know how it affected the software. Since the Wii U has backwards compatibility with the Wii, I'd assume it has a 50 Hz option as well but I can't remember.

A great thing about the Kirby Collection is that it has Kirby's Dreamland 3 front the SNES, which was super expensive on physical media. If you want all the main line Kirby games on physical media, this was the thing to get.

100% yes! I feel like every other version that came afterwards (or even before) has been disappointing because this one set the bar so high. It's got the hints of mystery and folklore the original melody brings to the table, but the arrangement makes it exciting and adventurous. The worst one for me is the Link to the Past version which seems withheld and stoic. This version is definitely the one that goes all out. Links Awakening is a close second followed by the original Zelda

I emulated Super Smash Bros. Melee. In my experience, it runs fine until it gets to graphically intensive stages like Dream Fountain. Buying the original hardware is better because, it'll actually run at a stable framerate. For older consoles like the Genesis and SNES, go for it. But when it comes to OG Xbox, PS1, PS3, Xbox 360, and PS2. Run. You need a decent PC to make the games run at an acceptable level for those consoles. Also, pray that the rom you downloaded doesn't have a virus attached to it.

Imteresting note about the Wii Sports + Resort combo disc: the two save files it makes for each game are different from the save files the two discs make. In other words, you can't use the same save data for your Wii Sports disc as you can with your Wii Sports + Resort Combo Disc's Wii Sports mode.

I appreciate you going into detail about the pros/cons and the differences between official and unofficial emulation roughly midway into the video I think. As someone who really hasn't dabbled with hacking or experimenting with illegal emulation in any capacity whatsoever before, you really cleared up and demystified what's the appeal to both in a succinct way. And in case there are those wondering why I have never engaged with illegal emulation before, it is not stemming from this moral superiority and moral righteousness/high ground, instead rather it is from a severe lack in technical expertise and skill and also I am absolutely petrified to even attempt or go near illegal emulation for fear of what it could result in for my PC and the consequences that could ensue if I screw something up on the technological side of things

Really, as long as you have a super basic understanding of how to use a PC (i.e unzipping zip files, using file explorer) and have some common sense in terms of internet safety (not clicking obviously dodgy links and download buttons) emulation couldn’t be easier nowadays. Reddit has a whole mega thread on where to get ROMs safely and most popular emulators are a one click install. It’s only when you get into newer stuff like Switch or PS3 emulation that things get more difficult - but as long as you follow the official guides then it is quite easy.

About that Tetris & Dr. Mario set... If you look at them carefully, they actually feel more like upgrades of the Game Boy versions rather than the NES ones. The graphics, the music, the head to head modes, they all use derivatives of how the titles operated on the handheld rather than anything from the NES.

I had asked for the Kirby 20th collection as a birthday present when that released. My parents actually bought it but returned it because they assumed i was too old for Kirby games. Never saw it in stores afterward

I read online that Metroid Prime Trilogy production was limited so I managed to bag a sealed steelbook copy at the normal price before it became hard to find with the intention of selling it later on. I held onto it for a couple of years and sold it on ebay for five times what I paid for it. Wish I kept it now, its a good collectors piece.

Shame we never got the Kirby collection in Europe for a system with a region lock. Glad that the game's ISO file still found the way to my Wii's harddrive. The new challenge stages are a great bonus.

I still have my SNES Classic plugged into my TV, and it is used at least once per week. Granted, I've sideloaded new games, but it's the way my kids play retro games.
