I genuinely love GameXplain, but I gotta respectfully disagree on the remaster/remake sentiment real quick. Just in 2023, we've got Tears of the Kingdom, Pikmin 4, and Super Mario Wonder. Incredible lineup. Remastering & remaking games like Metroid Prime, Pikmin and Paper Mario are additive new ways to introduce these games to a new broader audience... Gamecube sold like basically less than ONE SIXTH of the Switch installed base, and the gaming audience is larger now. Nintendo realized that the silver lining of Wii U's colossal failure, was that they could repackage Wii U games for a broader Switch audience. That trick only works once for that library, so they're looking to have a similar stream of remastered/remade legacy software to supplement the new big releases. Overall, I think they're great additions to the Switch library. Love the discussion as always!

and i’m happy to experience my childhood favourites again with nicer graphics. sure, i could eventually get a beefy pc and… play them “legitimately” and not break the law in any way, or buy another old console for way too much money just to play them again… but i prefer the HD rerelease/remaster approach. i love Thousand Year Door. the creepy steeple is actually breath taking in this remake. and like you said, the original Pikmin is the definition of a hidden gem. so hidden literally no one played it because it was on a console that sold terribly.

@@SykoMuffin during the Thousand Year Door remake reveal, I was legitimately astounded. I never thought we would get a triumphant return to that style of game since it's SO against current Paper Mario sensibilities. The fact that this is not just a remaster but a FANCY remake is amazing. Peak Paper Mario. btw, if Intelligent Systems wants to do something different than past Paper Marios, that's totally cool, they don't have to cling to old stuff. I will just call out that they should commit to a different direction instead of a weird half-step. The standard-enemy combat system in Origami King was so aggressively unfun. Puzzle-y combat tied to a timer was like the worst of both worlds, which was a shame, since the boss battles and rest of the game were very very charming and creative! oh and hell yes, Pikmin is amazing haha

One thing that should be talked about as we are approaching the end of the Switch is the lack of Player's Choice or "select" titles. They have for their past consoles during the end of cycle or even earlier start to reduce the price of their best sellers to a low price. Obviously, it makes sense that they don't need to for a lot of their games, Mario Kart 8, TLOZ, Odyssey, Animal Crossing and Smash are all going to sell no matter what, but for some of their other titles like Luigi's Mansion 3, Kirby and the Forgotten land, etc, it would definitely be nice to have those at a lower price to complete the collection as we get to the end of the Switch.

Is Sony really who you should compare to? RemAking games that didn't need it for full price? (Last of Us), we get nothing in terms of PS2 and PS3 re-releases because they can't be bothered with emulation.

Games are nostalgic not exactly better just familiar and comforting. There's more crazy stuff in Mario Odyssey compared to 64, maybe Nintendo games haven't gotten significantly better but the industry as a whole has made games far and beyond the ones of old. To be fair if you haven't found games "better than Super Mario RPG I think you need to try Witcher 3 on anything but the Switch or a Fallout game or Baldur's Gate 3. There's a bit of copium here if you're saying he's wrong for wanting new fresh experiences.

It’s so weird how ppl are upset about remakes and remasters when in reality I’d much prefer play the upgraded version anyway! Many old games do not hold up these days especially control-wise so having not just enhanced visuals, but also better game mechanics is definitely a win when it comes to remakes.

I'll be honest, the initial hype for TTYD remake dwindled quite a lot for me not long after it was announced, but that's merely because it IS a game I've played to death over and over. But the reason I have played it so many times is because it's one of those games that's worth going back to. Getting a full blown remake of one of my favourite games ever does not have a downside to it and I also don't see it as Nintendo hitting a "panic button" To me it feels more like they've finally listened to the fans about the majority preferring the style of the old games and also seeing that TTYD is still to this day the most popular Paper Mario game, so they're testing the waters by remaking said game by today's graphical standard to see how well it does. They're basically giving it another chance to see if that truly IS the direction Paper Mario games should go back to. They are doing a very smart move that will work out best for them AND fans. How can any of this be a concern? I don't get it? 😂

The latest Nintendo Direct was a pretty good one - much, *_much_* better than last year's September Nintendo Direct! However, I'm emotionally bummed here that we didn't get an announcement for a *_proper,_*_ _*_*brand-new*_* Donkey Kong video game and instead got an announcement for a _Mario Vs. Donkey Kong_ remake - where Donkey Kong gets sidelined to villain status once again there; and that Mario steals the proverbial spotlight, even though he's the star in 2 other announcements of first-party video games (the _Super Mario RPG_ remake and the _Paper Mario: the Thousand Year Door_ remaster) in this month's Nintendo Direct.

The Mario/Donkey Kong series is 7 games long and they are relatively short. I don't see why they couldn't have just remade all the games and put them into collections if they wanted them all to look and perform better. Considering most of them are on defunct hardware, I don't see why this wasn't an option.

To counter jake’s point : I wouldn’t bother play an old game like Ttyd or persona 3 If it didn’t look better or play better with modern quality of life updates to either gameplay or visuals an old game ported on NSO is not exciting or worthy of my time while a remake totally is And these remakes are old and deserving of new life and shiny visuals to gain a new audience make them appealing to new people. Metroid prime was soo good and I appreciated the new visuals and control options I wouldn’t bother playing it was it just a port. I understand your point they should be readily available but I much prefer an old game get the glow up it deserves although I hate “HD” ports like LM2 hd that I agree it’s not even a glow up and probably full price unfortunately

I still cannot get over the fact that we're finally getting Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door after how many years it's been rumored for Switch However, why are people still bashing about Mario nowadays, especially when it's about a remake of TTYD that gamers today didn't get to play that one 20 years ago on the GameCube. It's a beautiful thing that we get to now take this one on the go, whereas the one on GameCube, you couldn't. They need to release everything on the current Switch instead of Switch 2. Or a simultaneous releases if Switch 2 is a thing in the future

I think, rather than reimaginings, I'd much prefer something completely new that takes inspiration from old games, something like Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. That game began as a remake of ALttP, but turned into its own game that builds off of the original with a modern design lens and does completely new things as well. It stands on its own as something new and interesting, capturing the spirit of the original without stomping on its identity.

The only problem I have with remakes/remasters/ports is when they are charged full price. They haven't spent the same time and resources by remaking a game as they would spend creating a game from the scratch, so full price should be unacceptable. But, if they don't come full price, I think it's fine, it's always great to give newer players the opportunity to play things they might've missed out on originally.

In regards to the Mario RPG remakes, my thinking is that perhaps they have some sequels in the making, being developed for the elusive new console. So for the end of the switch’s lifecycle, they’ve remade these games to get the current audience engrossed in the RPG-style of Mario to ensure success for the new games! (Hopefully haha)

I somewhat agree with Jake's take here, but I think Mario RPG & Paper Mario TTYD are a different story. We haven't had a true Mario RPG since Mario & Luigi BIS remake. In 2019. On 3DS. And then AlphaDream went bankrupt. IntSys hasn't made Paper Mario an RPG since 2004, & SMRPG was a one & done on SNES. As a Mario RPG fan, I genuinely thought they might've been dead. These two games are like a reanimation chamber to me. I NEVER thought Square would work together with Nintendo again, less so on Mario RPG! I NEVER thought IntSys would even acknowledge the RPG gameplay of Paper Mario, less so Thousand-Year Door itself! These two games were literally

love sora closing both ultimate & it's amiibo but we don't need dx as people need to deal that ultimate will get reboot(if anything hope the companies have interest in bringing the series back as i wasn't expecting 3rd party for the direct/compared to smash where i like it just as much as 1st do think it gets overhyped.) as smash doesn't really do street fighter esque moves like that,can easily make up for that focusing on areas like single player(outside a few characters the most i want for 6 is a new adventure mode.) . compared to mario kart overextending(and just needing to be done as it needs to go to 9/is showing it's limit with how some of the tracks in tour look.) and with sora is more even disney knows they couldn't stop it from getting amiibo as i never at any point doubted it was going to happen.

I think these guys are crazy; some of the best games have only gotten even better after a remake, like Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver on the original DS, or Pikmin 1 and 2 on the Wii, or Metroid: Samus Returns on the 3DS. The Zelda remakes have almost always been better across the board (with maybe an exception to Majora's Mask 3D swimming controls, but I never minded that). Thousand Year Door and Super Mario RPG remakes look to continue that trend, but bringing back the best of the best. Now if only they had made a Luigi's Mansion 1 remake instead of 3, we wouldn't even be having this conversation (though the one 3DS wasn't terrible, assuming you played on the New 3DS models) Also, I'd rather have one of the best Paper Mario games remade, instead of them making more mediocre trash and diluting the Paper Mario name. It's already barely sitting at 50/50 playability; let them remake the older game and then maybe remember how to make a GOOD Paper Mario game (but that's just being optimistic)

would say it was enjoyable with titles i'm very looking forward to but wished they gave others some focus: hyped for thousand year door being i can play the game without paying a fortune(the $60 complaints are extremely stupid as compared to ff7 which is a new game tyd and dark moon was the weakest game in the series it'd wouldn't work other than making it a new game as the cutscenes were the best part.)/just but would say i hope they and hope they take feedback to bring back the better original direction for a new paper mario. they aren't "panic buttons" as mario rpg needed a reworking(with how outside rabbids the mario rpg's were dead outside mario & luigi being in a coma.) and mario vs. donkey kong while i'd prefer the series stay dormant do like it's based off the best of those games.(the switch online just needs to make it free,or just make a virtual console already for gba/gamecube.) really hyped for princess peach showtime as i love the theater theme,getting different outfits based off movies & with princess peach being the focus really hope we see peach stick as a playable character(alongside daisy/rosalina.)/ditch the kidnapping. prime 4's not gonna be a switch 2 launch title.(closest would be a twilight princess/botw scenario of it on both.) looking back really love off the hook's single player modes more than the main ones(2's being predictable/3 really feeling like they need to stop focusing on the squid sisters already.)

6:00 I agree that their remaster/remake philosophy is weird. I think the fan's desire for these games is mainly because of the fact that so much of Nintendo's history is no HD games. I think once we get to about where the majority of classic games have HD remasters, it will be a lot better. While many of us still have these old games, we can't exactly just plug in the GameCube or the Wii and play them. None of the tvs in my house have the AV cord ports so I literally can't play those. Plus the visual quality of everything before WiiU just isn't fun to play anymore. With switch online, we can play these classic games on a screen that is visually tolerable. I just wish their philosophy of remaster vs remakes was better. People online can rip these games off the original disks and post them online for me to download and run on an emulator or even on my smartphone, so why does it take so long for nintendo to release these classic games that should really just be very simple emulations? The other thing that bothers me is why would the choose to fully remake/remaster Paper Mario: TYD but then only choose to do a direct port for Mario Sunshine? Of the two, Paper mario is the game that has visually held up after 20 years, largely due to the unique animation style. I would even argue that both the original paper mario and TYD have held up visually better than any N64 game and GameCube game respectively. So why did we not get a sunshine or galaxy remake, when those are clearly the games that need it more. Either way, I hope they continue to expand the switch online library and re-release GameCube games until we have all the classics, but the thing I hope for even more is that we get to keep this online library forever. With PC on steam I have the games that I've bought forever, but with Nintendo I've had essentially 2 different libraries of the same games between the wii era and the switch era, so I just really hope we get to keep all these games on future Nintendo consoles

Once again I was so bummed that Ice Climber Switch still wasn't confirmed. I feel as if Nintendo was trolling us with Song of Nunu *cough cough* fake new Ice Climber game. It's been over 4 years since the two Condors in "Kings and Queens of the Sky," so the new Ice Climber is technically in the same boat as Metroid Prime 4 and Hollow Knight Silksong (formerly Tears of the Kingdom was in the same boat as well). I'm curious about SPY X ANYA Operation Memories because I've been told that Spy x Family is a good anime. Have anyone in the comments noticed that in TTYD the A button is red and ZL and ZR buttons are gray? Maybe TTYD is a next gen game?

I thought it was bad. Either it was a remake, Mario related, or something we knew about. Mario kart dlc was the best thing they showed. Paper Mario is a great game but unless they add something new and exciting to it, it’s definitely something I can wait for
