Nintendo is like the Disney of video games. For those that forgot or maybe don't remember a time before streaming, Disney used to be in the habit of only selling their classic movies DVD/VHS for limited periods of time, rotating the available selection in and out of their vault. @Billy Bob Bobson uhh, no. Look, Nintendo does own the IP. They are allowed to protect it. Yes, piracy is stealing, but there are you have to realize: modding and emulating are both legal as long as you own the game you are messing with. If Nintendo just asked emulators to find a way to make sure people own the games they are emulating, then this wouldn’t be a problem, but it isn’t what they’re doing. They are shutting the entire thing down, which is not cool and does not follow the law. They also tend to ignore fair use laws a lot of the time, and are striking down things that fans make out of love for their content, which are not a threat to them at all. While fan games are not always fair use, other companies have no problem with them and even hire fan game developers, while Nintendo sends dmca takedowns because they see things made as tributes as threats, which just feels wrong. TLDR: to an extent, Nintendo can protect their IPs, but they go way too far a lot of the time and ignore basic fair use laws. Disagree if you want, but don’t get mad at others for looking at it like this.

Y'know, we used to rent games when I was growing up... Nintendo probably thinks thats what kids still do these days, not understanding that streaming and online distribution has completely killed brick and mortar rental stores. Its why Sony and Microsoft tend not to give that much of a shit over emulation, because they know its money they weren't ever going to make to begin with given it wasn't something they were pursuing. When it comes to Nintendo emulation, most people are just emulating N64-Wii titles. Y'know, games that Nintendo can't and won't really re-release or make available on a regular basis because they're too cheap- i mean because it'd be way too expensive to license a lot of those 2nd and 3rd party titles. Its especially bad if those games don't have other ports that can be used on Playstation or Xbox emulators. Or, y'know, maybe people just wanna play as Link in Soul Calibur II.

Yeah Nintendo has always been the kind of corporation that absolutely hates the idea of competition, and want control more than anything. With the whole Dolphin situation, it wasn't actually a DMCA takedown request. Valve asked Nintendo what they thought of it, Nintendo didn't like it and told Valve, so Valve banned Dolphin. While people think that Nintendo may have something against them using the Wii Common Keys in the system, the reality is that even if it didn't Nintendo would not want Dolphin on Steam because they see the Steam Deck as competition (even though the Steam Deck audience is much smaller). The last thing they want is for emulation on the deck or PC to become even more convenient/easy than it already is. However, because it wasn't a formal DMCA takedown request, the Dolphin Devs can't counterclaim it, but on the other hand are basically free to carry on as usual off steam. Also, people are acting like Dolphin is unique in this instance, saying how Retroarch didn't include the common key, but it's in the dolphin core for retroarch, so Dolphin is definitely not unique in that regard. If possible, they should probably require the user to get it from their keys bin file, but it should also be noted that the concept of an illegal number doesn't have much legal precedent either way. Nobody knows for certain if Nintendo could take down Dolphin due to the common key or not because the court cases are few and between for this kind of situation. And it should be noted that if the key is a problem, it could be seen as just as problematic whether it is bundled or not. And we already know what Nintendo thinks of users dumping their own keys based on the fact they sent a DMCA takedown request over Lockpick RCM. In general, I don't think Nintendo will ever be okay with emulation, even if you can prove you got the rom/iso legitimately. Nintendo at the end of the day sees their old content as competition for their newer content. They know that if they sold their old roms for a fair price, that many might just play those. So when Nintendo does port old content or make it accessible, they like to price it high so people will consider buying the new content first, and they do the bare minimum so the old content basically prints money. As a result they see emulation as compettion because emulators provide way more benefits to the users, which raises the standards of players. They want people to be limited so they have to buy what Nintendo puts out regardless of the state Nintendo puts it out in and that's harder to do if people have a higher baseline to compare it to. Nintendo might eventually put gamecube or wii games on NSO and people are going to notice the paltry selection and low quality of the emulation compared to what they get from Dolphin. Nintendo ultimately knows they can't actually stop people from emulating those old games, but rather than putting out an effort and service that can convince somebody to buy all of their old games again or pay for the service, Nintendo would probably always choose to just try to complain and try to cry to companies like Microsoft and Valve to do something for them as that takes no effort, and might keep some people in the dark about Dolphin and the like existing. Even less grey things like modding get them angry. They see somebody modding in Shek into BOTW the same as somebody who pirates BOTW. Same as somebody who emulates their original copy of the game. At the end of the day, they have just as much problem with emulation or modding as they do piracy. They don't want people to play old games legitimately either, they want you buying their new games. This is the same company that pushed for renting to become illegal in Japan (and they succeeded). If they had the power, they would give all of their games an expiry date, and/or ban the used game market.

The bad emulation quality for switch online really only applies to the N64. The other consoles actually have really well done emulators. Heck, the SNES app even uses rollback net code, which most switch games don't use.

The Snes and Nes emulators still laggy more online than playing through an emulator that supports online on pc, it has no cheats, which in older games are really fun, way less features overall, you can even change palletes to however you want on Nes and Snes emulators on PC, which is cool.

Eh, the Wii U doesn't actually make the game HD. It just outputs a 1080p signal, but the game itself is still running at 480p. If it didn't output at 1080p, your tv would just stretch aka upscale it to 1080p itself. Furthermore, the Wii U output has been noted to be pretty bad compared to the Wii's output, mainly colors aren't as vibrant. Lastly, running the HD version or even the gamecube version in Nintendon't would allow you to play using the gamepad for the controls and screen (at 480p, sure, but it should look pretty good on the smaller screen).

@@GenghisConnThr333 Well, of course the Wii was designed with CRTs in mind, but the Wii U won't make Wii or gamecube games look any better on an HDTV because even though the Wii U was made for HDTVs it runs the games at the same resolution as it would on a Wii. But the irony is the blurriness you are describing is not fixed by playing on a Wii U. Whether you are comparing a Wii Component and Wii U component or Wii Component to Wii U HDMI output, the Wii U is well known to increase the blur. Whether it is a Wii or a Wii U, games have a deflicker filter applied, which makes the image quality look blurry. Homebrew can allow you to disable this filter, but on an unmodded system you cannot do anything about it. On a Wii U however, there are additional issues that make the problem worse though. The Wii U does not properly upscale the output so there tends to be black borders surrounding the output and the aspect ratio can get wonky. The other issue with the Wii U is that it only supports limited range RGB, and if your tv is set to full range, it will make colors look washed out.. A wii with an HDMI mod would look best because those hdmii mods tend to support full range rgb. There's a good video about this by Good Vibes Gaming that goes over this very subject showing the issues directly. It's called "Wii U's a Downgrade for Playing Wii Games".

@Mosoman1011: Remember the last Nintendo switch update with the new console where gameboy/gameboy collor and GBA for the expension pack, and that was in Feburary this year, the reason they might be takeing down dolphin emulator and the 3DS hacks, this could mean Nintendo Game cube nintendo switch online could be comming this fall, if they considered a seperated upgrade to the hand held upgrade, meaning if this is truth the next hand held upgrade could be next Feburary or near that time on the Nintendo switch online, or it could be this instead Game cube game remaster since Game cube is the only one that did not have a virtual console to have it permanitly as an off line software, and they might change thing and do both, if you like the game when playing in Nintendo switch online, then you go and buy it for real. Remember does are just guessing from me, if it turn out to be truth it is a lucky guess on my part.

They don't care about piracy? Yeah, that's why they shut down ROM sites while refusing to sell us the games they don't want us to pirate. Other than selling subscriptions to the NSO, which still doesn't have some of the most popular games in existence on them. Pokemon. They shut down the 3DS store and still haven't put them on the NSO. I have the original 3 games, but if someone in my city wanted to buy a copy of Red from Power Up Gaming, it would cost them $109.95. And that's just the cartridge. They sell copies in the box for $450. Nintendo would rather you pay them for that than get a ROM from the internet and play it on an emulator.

3DS update only patched BannerBomb3, and it only affects Old 3DS. With other methods it can still be modded. N3DS is fine

The Oracle games should be coming to the Online service eventually. Twilight Princess and Wind Waker need ports and knowing Nintendo, they will be separate releases at about 60-70 bucks each. Skyward Sword is proof of that.

I wouldn't be surprised if they pursue it in part for political reasons. Specifically Japanese politics. It's been a long time thing that Nintendo lobbies the government there to make stricter and harsher laws around emulation and modifying games and systems.

Nintendo restricting access to games people want to play or only allowing it through a subscription encourages piracy. If the modern "legit" way to play means you don't own games, normalising having a library on an SD card makes a ROM library a short hop, skip and jump to piracy and not owning the games regardless. The real dream and giving back to the fans would be: once you finish a game on NSO, the game is permanently added to your library. A true achievement point that is worth something. Even if people used glitches and cheats, they'd still be paying. As the Switch lifecycle comes to an end and 1st party sales aren't threatened by a back catalog, it'd be a heck of a way to go out. Without some kind of incentive, the market for handheld emulators should become a legitimate threat to Nintendo, if and when they become just as user friendly.

Nintendo has always been a bit of a control freak, back in the NES/SNES days thirds party devs could only release a fixed amount of games each year. They could release old GC games for 20€/$ each one and make tons of money, but they don't want that, they want control.
