i would recommend watching thomas game docs' video on the nintendo colopl lawsuit basically since the 80s japanese game devs have patented very basic features to prevent patent trolling from companies outside the games industry. for example, snk had patented the title screen. these were never enforced. they've had this unofficial code of honour to not abuse patents like this. nintendo keeps up this tradition to this day. the only time in recent memory nintendo has pursued patent infringement was in said colopl lawsuit, where the company was going after other companies with patent lawsuits. it turned out nintendo had filed a patent over a decade prior that was the same thing they were suing other companies for, so they sued colopl for patent infringement. obviously nintendo makes dumb lawsuits, and i dont like their attitude in regards to fan games and rom sites. but i also dont like pocketpair's history of blatantly ripping off other games. not even just with palworld (although it's pretty obvious with palworld), they've made other games that rip off games like breath of the wild, minecraft, hollow knight, dead cells and among us.

To anyone who is confused about the situation. This is a Patent infringement lawsuit, not a Copyright infringement like everyone thought back in the day. So this lawsuit has nothing to do with artwork or character design. Instead it involves mechanics. The apparent mechanics in question (I could be wrong) that Nintendo has patented and are suing for are (so far) (1) The targeting system of tossing an (not an orb) object at a creature in an overworld, like what we see in Legends Arceus. (2) Mounting and Dismounting a flying creature in the overworld. (3) And releasing creatures into the over world via an object. What's even crazier is that the patent(s) was apparently refiled in May of this year which was AFTER Palworld's release. And was a month or so right before Sony and Pocketpair publicly announced a new partnership to branch Palworld into many of the same avenues of entertainment and media that Pokemon has experienced.

But I did own Atari 2600 but nobody played that. Was Nintendo vs Sega. It was all they talked about during recess, noon and after school. It Had been before 90’s, Cus, in mid 1990’. My Parents left busy life of Toronto and we moved to a farm in AB Canada. I Later end up buying Snes and grew up playing that. Mega man X, uh Zelda: Link to the past, and Top Gear 2, NHL 94, lol when Ea was good, couple others. Don’t remember what other I played to death. Now 47 yrs old, Don’t get me wrong,I still love Nintendo, love my Wiiu and switch. looking toward the switch 2. But I still agree Nintendo is very anti consumer and they do needs wake up and join us in 2024. But Nintendo will never change. I’ve Seen so many awesome and wonderful worlds a single Guy bring Links game in UE4 games and demo. And what does Nintendo do. Sue them. Not hire them for next gen Zelda games. Nintendo hates its gamers and players. And so anti consumers about anything Nintendo. If you breath the world Nintendo. They jump down your throat and send army of lawyers after you, and chances they win. Imagine a valve or steam was that harsh or strict. They would never have survived. How Nintendo has? I’ll never understand.

Gaming patents are the worst. If the OG game devs had patented their game mechanics then Nintendo and Pokemon wouldnt exist. No Mario games if the first person to make a platforming game patented "jumping on platforms and moving sideways in a level"
@trinity31409Ай бұрын
Maybe. However patents are granted for novel development. They must be new invention and distinct from previously existing things to get approved. So simple platforming would not be patentable as it was a common element in game design. It would not be unique enough.

I have seen many comments like this. Consider though that patents are reviewed by highly specialised people. It is not like getting an idea notarized. The ratio of approved patents to rejected ones is about 1:10000. For a patent to be approved it must have a specific and unique element that does not already exist.
