Wow guys, words cannot described how great this episode was, well worth the wait. I'm just gonna add a few things regarding controls sine they may be useful for others: 1- Some games were programmed to take advantage of the fact that the SNES/SFC could use multiple controllers. The following GameBoy games can be played 2 players simultaneously when using a Super GameBoy 1 or 2: Battle Arena Toshinden Dragon Ball Z: Goku Hishouden Dragon Ball Z 2: Goku Gekitouden Kettou Beast Wars: Beast Senshi Saikyou Ketteisen Killer Instinct King Of Fighters '95 King Of Fighters - Heat of The Battle Nekketsu! Beach Volley dayo Kunio-kun Nettou Garou Densetsu 2: Aratanaru Tatakai Nettou Real Bout Garou Densetsu Special Nettou Samurai Spirits: Zankurou Musouken Nintama Rantarou GB Nintama Rantarou GB: Eawase Challenge Puzzle Pocket Puyo Puyo 2 Pocket Puyo Sun Power Quest Puyo Puyo Puzzle Nintama Rantarou GB Samurai Shodown SD Hiryuu No Ken Gaiden SD Hiryuu No Ken Gaiden 2 SD Hiryuu no Ken EX Street Fighter II Super Chinese Fighter GB Super Chinese Land 3 Super Chinese Land 1.2.3' World Heroes 2 Jet The following titles can be played with up to 4 players using an SNES/SFC Multitap when using a Super GameBoy 1 or 2:: Bomberman GB (Wario Blast) Bomberman GB 2 (Bomberman GB outside of Japan) Bomberman Collection (contains Bomberman GB 1 & 2) Jinsei Game 2- While raphnet-tech's SNES to GameCube converter is nice, it has one major flaw in my opinion, the button mapping for SNES for when using GBA games. When using any controller where the face buttons form a diamond shape, it's better to use the West buttons (Y for SNES) for action and the South button (B for SNES) to Jump. Raphnet-tech's converter does not allow this in SNES mode, only NES mode which removes the convenient usage of L & R. My alternative is to use a basic SNES to GameCube converter that you can by for cheap on ebay or Amazon and an SNES Power Plug, a 3rd party device that was made by Tyco in the 90' and licensed by Nintendo. This device will allow you to remap all of the buttons on your SNES controller. For games like Metroid Fusion, you can remap your buttons to jump with B and shoot with Y. While for RPGs like Pokemon, you can remap Start on X and Select on A, giving you DS style Pokemon controls for your GBA games.
@SkyScourgeGod6 жыл бұрын
You could also use a Raphnet N64 to Gamecube adapter as an option for playing on the Gameboy Player. It may sound weird at first to think of using the N64's odd controller for this, but if you really think about it the N64 controller with its D-Pad all the way to the left, the A and B buttons at a slant and the convenient placement of the L and R shoulder buttons may make it a candidate for a really nice controller to use with Gameboy games. If the original controller bothers you still, then you can use the same Raphnet adapter with Retro Fighters new controller called the Brawler 64 which has a much more modern layout.

TheBlackSoul Wouldn’t you want the Dark Filter however? Most GBA games were not designed to be seen natively, and for a few games “restores” GBP palettes.

You missed an interesting one. Goomba Color. It's a Game Boy Color emulator for GBA. It allows you to play GB/GBC games on a Game Boy Micro. But what's most interesting is that it supports Game Boy Color enhancements AND Super Game Boy borders at the same time. You can play LInk's Awakening DX, in full color with the SGB border and on original Nintendo hardware!

Guys, your RGB Master Class series is incredible. I feel like I get a college-level lecture on video signals and outputs every time a new one comes out. Thank y'all for taking the time to research, test, script, shoot, and edit these - these are hands down the best resource for getting the best image quality out of retro games, which is something sorely lacking. I would hazard a guess that the poor upscaling in modern TVs is part of the reason why retro gaming is still a niche community, but your videos are working to dispel myths and improve the quality of all these older games. As a retro gamer myself, I have a deep appreciation for the time, energy, and money that goes into these labors of love, so thank you very much for making these!

@wiggy89126 жыл бұрын
It should be noted that the micro’s colors are CLOSER to what the console was originally meant to present. GBA games were made with a non-illuminated LCD in mind, so the colors were severely intensified to make them appear vivid on a dark LCD. When the backlit SP came along, the colors became comically over-saturated as a result. The micro purposefully addressed/fixed this issue.

Wow,Tons of great info here! The only one extra thing worth mentioning is the 'monster brain' Aside to being a cheat device, it allows custom pallets for GB games on a real GBC, it can also (attempt) to run GB games in GBC mode with the extra cpu speed As well as stipping Dual mode GBC games back to GB mode, so you could run Say zelda DX or tetris DX with one of the generic gbc pallets (including black&white)!
@mylifeingaming8 жыл бұрын
[Try4ce] Woah that's very interesting, I had never heard of that! It also appears to be very cheap. It seems to be designed for Pokemon games. It works with any Game Boy game, though? I've just never been that big of a fan of the GBC palettes.
@bobdotexe8 жыл бұрын
Yes, it works for just about any gb/gbc game. and it even has a feature that makes it act as a budget 'mega memory card' It's a great device that many people have never heard of! and unlike the SGB, your custom pallets can be saved in the devices (non-volatile memory) I'd really suggest checking out!

Thank you for this video. I never knew about Swiss and GBI until I saw this. I now have a Game Boy Player running GBI-SR at 240p over RGB SCART (sync over composite for guaranteed compatibility across devices). Managed to get the config files to default to my desired settings and set GBI-SR to autoexec so it's as simple as boot and play like as if it's stock. One handy thing about being a PAL gamer is having a HDTV with SCART still supported and actually upscaled rather well without the need for a separate upscaler device (thank you Panasonic).

MLiG Saves the Game Boy's Christmas: The Holiday Extravaganza. One factor to note for the SP vs. the original GBA is the headphone jack: the original model has one, but all SPs do not. [Try4ce] Some sort of SD media card reader for GameCube memory slots for starters. Then, your disc-launcher methods are either an Action Replay, or there is a method you can use via Super Smash Bros. Melee, which I am unfamiliar with... should be easy to search for, though.
@TheRealSeiferoth6 жыл бұрын
paulink you can build your own SD memory card adapter. Or purchase an SD gecko (they were pretty cheap back in the day, not sure if they're still that easy to come by though). Then if you have an action replay, there is a set of codes you can use and instead of swapping discs you just open and close the lid with the action replay disc still inside and it will boot from your SD gecko (or DIY adapter). You need certain files in certain places on the SD card but just Google and you should find what you need.

If you want to play on the big screen... sorry, but emulation really is the superior way in this case. Like mention in the video, both the Super GB and the GB Player runs at ~60hz instead of the GBs/GBAs native ~59.7hz. You will never get the perfect silky smooth scrolling of the original hardware that way, there's always going to be a hitch every few seconds. With emulators you can slightly speed up the hardware to match your monitors refresh rate, or even better, if own a CRT or GSYNC monitor you can actually run the games at their original ~59.7hz.

Regarding GBA on 3DS - this is the BEST way to play GBA games - even better than any TV or 'real' GBA hardware mode. It uses 100% GBA hardware and firmware and therefore doesn't utilise any emulation whatsoever. As you allude to, the Ambassador releases are terrible however - with added darkness and ghosting filters applied. If you install a custom firmware that patches the AGB-FIRM inside your 3DS you can use homebrew tools to create your own installable GBA titles free of the ugly filters Nintendo likes to use on some of their VC titles (the 3DS NES VC titles are also terrible - and also fixed by making your own NES VC games) . As an owner of a AGS101-modded original GBA I never thought the 3DS family would effectively make actual GBA hardware redundant, but it actually does so with ease - and I'll probably never use my older handhelds again. My favoured way to play GBA games in all their glory is actually on a CFW'd 2DS because this has arguably the best ergonomics of any Nintando handheld.

[Try4ce] I'll have to look into this. It might be fun to play around with custom firmware on my *Old* 3DS XL.

General Light You also lose a larger 1:1 aspect ratio display that you find on a modded OG GBA - but you can patch / find patched e-reader content if you really want it. For example, the Mario 3 e-reader levels that were included in the WiiU reissue can be patched in, and is arguably a superior solution to the real thing because a real cartridge hasn't got the spare memory to hold all the extra stuff. Not to mention having truly native support for three entire libraries on one hand held (GBA, DS and 3DS). That's pretty awesome by any measure.
@Fattydeposit8 жыл бұрын
General Light I don't think Nintendo have ever acknowledged the ghosting and darkness filters that are applied on the official 3DS NES and Ambassador GBA virtual console releases, let alone explain why they're applied. However, a minority of early GBA releases used super-bright palettes in order to compensate for the dark screen of the original unit, and these games probably benefit from the darkness filter to reduce the issue of crushed whites. There's also one case in which the added ghosting is beneficial: The GBA F-Zero games have a persistent map graphic on the bottom left of the screen, and without the filters its ultra high refresh rate can leave temporary screen burn on the 3DS screen. For the vast majority of the GBA library though the removal of the darkness / ghosting makes these games shine.

I'm pretty sure the ambassador game sare emulated. 3DS may have AEM hardware, but it doesn't have "the" GBA hardware inside...

Now that I see in this episode, the SNES' Video Quality even with 1Chip Consoles is a bit blurry compared to pure Digital Solutions... I hope one day people will be able to find a way to get pure Digital Signals out of the SNES even if it is near impossible... For now.... :3
@The_Mister_E8 жыл бұрын
Helloz World Yeah. There ought to be digital out mods for everything. Especially since the tech landscape is becoming more and more accepting of digital standards.
@RedArremer8 жыл бұрын
There's less of a push for digital on the SNES because you can actually get a really nice RGB picture if you know what to look for. The latest in the sharpest possible SNES picture is to now mod the mini model with a new 7374 RGB amp chip with the chip's filtering turned off. RetroRGB and I discovered this when we tested several models of SNES using a custom zoom profile with the Framemeister. With the filter turned off, the 7374-modded SNES mini puts out about the sharpest RGB picture I've seen yet, and it's only surpassed by digital images from emulators. However, the SNES 'suffers' from the same non-square resolution as the NES, and as such, using an RGB mod + Framemeister gives a much better solution for correcting the aspect ratio to 4:3. On digital images, correcting to 4:3 will leave random pixels oblong, which leads to shimmering artifacts during scrolling. The workaround is to slightly blur the edges in order to 'average' the width of the pixels, but this just mimics what the Framemeister already does naturally. You'd have to get used to playing with an image that is too wide or too skinny if you wanted to take full advantage of a digital picture's clarity. That's why a modded 1CHIP + Framemeister (and integer profiling) is a superb way to play games on the SNES.

KarbuncleX Is the difference between the 7314 and the 7374 that big as to make it worth it as an upgrade if I have already soldered the 7314 Board?
@RedArremer8 жыл бұрын
@Frozen, Most were, some weren't. However, since the SNES was in fact intended for 4:3 usage, that's what most people prefer to see the screen at. Take for example the triforce intro in Link to the Past. At 4:3 AR, the triforce are at perfect angles. At square pixel AR, they are oddly squished too skinny.
@RedArremer8 жыл бұрын
@ Helloz, depends on if you use a Framemeister or just going straight to a PVM. If you're upscaling with a Framemeister, it's worth getting a 7374, but make sure the filtering mode is disabled when you install it. That's the key to making the pixels super sharp.

Why didn't you mentioned emulators for android phones or for the psp?
@mylifeingaming8 жыл бұрын
[Try4ce] Well, obviously there are countless ways to emulate. Our videos are always going to first and foremost be about using real hardware, but we've started to try to include a bit of emulation. A lot of people want us to do videos all about emulation, but honestly there are a lot of people who are much more knowledgeable about it than we are. It's really not our area of expertise, so we just like to mention it in brief.
