The won't get 3rd party support which is very important for a console's success. Nintendo should focus on competing with other consoles and get every game they get from third party (and hell, why not have the best version of a 3rd party game on Nintendo?) but that will never happen as long as Nintendo keeps focusing on gimmicks instead of power causing third parties to avoid their console.

Plenty of innovation has occurred since then. Pikmin, which is about 15 years old now, is one such game that really shined in creativity where others haven't. Games like Fallout 3 introduced a fusion of RPG and FPS elements. Dead Space proved that horror was possible even when coupled with a lot of action. Super Paper Mario (though I'm not a fan of the game) made a unique pairing of platforming with open-world RPG gameplay. We've also seen branching stories in some games. And these are just the software things; hardware can alter how a game plays as well. Sure, very few games bring completely new, risky things to the table, but that's the way it's always been. Pretending no innovative games have appeared within the past two decades isn't just inaccurate; it makes it clear that you're stuck in the past.

I'm fighting with 4 others trying to push them off the edge. mk8 messed up the battle mode so now it's repetitive since there is only one thing to do, race. also, there isn't much variety. nintendo constantly claims they have these innovative features in games, but I haven't seen anything innovative since loz oot back on 98. plus cutscenes are done awful on nintendo consoles. they feature no voice acting and do little to convey a plot or meaning. Bronite yeah but nintendo's hardware can't run a lot of games people want to play on other consoles, thats where the specs come in. Metal gear solid V, fallout 4, dark souls 3 etc, none of those can run on the wii u. If the defense is in favor of having good games over specs then the they failed because they missed out on amazing games because of the specs of their console. If nintendo puts out a console that has strong hardware, its objectively better than them putting out one that arbitrary is weaker than the competition, because nintendo makes great games regardless but with the stronger hardware they position themselves as being the console that has everything you need no matter what your taste in games are.

I think this is the absolute crux of the issue. The notion in the above video of Nintendo as a failed company a la Sega is somewhat off-base because Nintendo's share of the modern zeitgeist in videogaming is incalculable. Nintendo's nest egg is their wide array of popular exclusive franchises. They are the shining example of a company possessing both comprehensive history and near-universally recognized company identity. It's not difficult to consider them a global cultural force at this point. The difficulty of pursuing console market dominance (and the position of being "the" console for 3rd party developers) would be balancing their current suite of strengths in strong enough measure that they don't lose their unimaginably valuable identity in the process. It's my theory that they have taken the "easy" way to longterm survival by maintaining their charm and satisfying the most loyal part of their base instead of trying to grow their console development to monopolist proportions using their identity as ammo and "winning the console war."

Hello from a year in the future. Turns out Nintendo learned from their mistakes with the Switch. 1) Wii U was clunky, a million cables and adapters and controllers. The Switch is streamline. One USB charger for everything. One set of controllers than can do everything. 2) The Switch is actually portable. While most people believed the future of portable gaming was smartphones (eg: the failure of the vita) Nintendo proved the world wrong. AAA games on the go is amazing. Compromising your phone’s battery life for that kind of performance isn’t practical or even possible. 3) The device is sleek and sexy. Another thing that appealed about the Wii was the body. The PS3 ugly and looked unappealing yo the average consumer. Same thing can be applied to the XBOX One and why the PS4 beat it. The switch is a beautiful piece of hardware, like an iPhone. Consumers want to own it just because of how modern and sleek the design is. 4) The switch had a strong launch. While there wasn’t many launch titles all at once, Zelda ultimately sold the Switch. The thing most people wondered was whether or not the Switch’s promise of power and portability was a lie or not. Zelda proved the world that the Switch had the power. The game is so beautiful and immersive and in our current age of smartphone use, people enjoy using handhelds more than sitting in front of the living room TV. Most people use the Switch in portable mode 70% of the time. 5) Because the switch is portable, it meant that Nintendo was no longer directly competing with Microsoft or Sony. The Switch is a handheld device and as a handheld device it is the most powerful and supported of it’s class. The fact that as a console it isn’t as powerful as the PS4 or Xbox One doesnt matter anymore because people who buy the Switch want the system for one of two reasons. The fact that it’s the most powerful handheld console or Nintendo’s 1st party games. Both are compelling enough reasons to buy one even if you already own a PS4 or Xbox One. The Switch isn’t a direct substitute for the other consoles because it is a portable gaming complement for them.

For all of you people complaining about Nintendo's gimmicks, look at the past. The D-pad was a gimmick. The shoulder buttons were a gimmick. The analog stick was a gimmick. All of these gimmicks became the standard and were no longer seen as gimmicks. Now they are all a part of modern controllers. Bullshit. The D-Pad was no gimmick, it was a mandatory element to control your game. Shoulder buttons were no gimmicks, they were an evolution of regular buttons, only that you can use more fingers for more buttons. The analogue stick was no gimmick, when games switched from 2D to 3D, a D-Pad just didn't do it anymore and you needed better directional input. All of those things were needed, where as something like a swingable remote was not needed, THAT was a gimmick. Whole motion control was not needed, but I admit it's a good thing to have, when developers implement it in a meaningful way. Or the touch pad on the PS4 controller, that was a gimmick that might not be there on the PS5 controller, because people didn't like it and they didn't want it.

I live in the US (Kentucky) and weirdly enough most people either didn't know about the Wii U at all or thought it was just something related to the Wii (instead of a new system). At this point most people know about it, but it took people like a year or so to figure out that a new Nintendo system existed.

I am in Kentucky as well. I can atest to this. There were people going to stores asking for the new tablet controller for the Wii. Those who were not keeping up with the industry like we do had no idea. When they found out it was a whole other system, they would turn around and leave. When Nintendo introduced the gamepad and said the name was Wii U, that was the first Nintendo E3 conference that made my stomach drop. I supported the Wii U and had many fun experiences with it that I will never regret. But, I easily saw the flaws and the writing on the wall. The NX better knock it out of the park. Until then, the PS4 will continue to be my primary source of console gaming entertainment.

Well here are a few reasons...do you really want less options? Secondly Nintendo games are built for Nintendo hardware. There is a reason when Mario Kart 8 came out it looked better then most PS4 games at the time. In fact nearly all their first party titles look beyond amazing because they are design to take full advantage of there hardware. I get why people think it be a good idea to go third party but there are a few things to point out with that...first "Sega". The second has to do with Nintendo games being made for Nintendo hardware, get ride of that and your going to see a huge drop in quality in Nintendo games because they would no longer be optimize.

Wii U had a lot of 3rd party support. It didn't matter 3rd party support isn't what will save Nintendo. 1st party games will. But Nintendo is stubborn and delayed putting ANY of their iconic 1st party titles into play until it was way too late. The Wii U lacks a solid lineup that have mass appeal and doesn't have the power and ease of access to support a solid lineup in the first place

However, it seems that the 'casual' gaming craze has eventually died or been supplanted by smartphone games, so the Wii u lost lots of sales there.

Wouldn't say that's the case minus the Zelda game. The Wii U has great first party games, but that's about it. Yes the Wii U does have third party support, but not in games that people would actually be interested in. As much as I despise COD, Nintendo needs to make a console that will allow them to run all of the popular third party games at a cheap production cost. Great first party games will be a given for the NX, quality third party titles that people actually care about is what they need to focus on now.

Nintendo played it smart for a while. The Wii opened up a can of whole new gamers. People who wouldn't play games otherwise as you mention. With the Gamecube you had the console wars, Playstation vs Xbox, but many people would buy a Gamecube next to their PS or Xbox, so they sold alright. Now Nintendo is so focused on trying to inovate things that it's hard for 3rd party developers to adjust their games to it. Not many are willing to put extra money in adding functions to their games the other platforms don't need. That said, i bought the Wii U. I only wanted a few games on it, so for me it was a worthy purchase. I didn't buy it at the start, i waited till Xenoblade came out. Why didn't i buy the PS4 or Xbone instead? Well I'm a pc gamer, no not a elitist who doesn't want a console, i had the PS3 and the Xbox 360. The reason i don't see a point (yet) to buy them yet is because most of their games come to the PC anyway. Why would i invest a few hundred euro's in a device that has most of the games i can already buy on my pc as well, and seeing i prefer playing on the PC i rather save that money up to upgrade my pc sometime again when it's needed, but right now my 5 year old pc still runs fine and on high quallity. But the Nintendo games don't come to PC so a valid reason for me personally to purchase the Wii U. But yeah, for many people it's not a interesting purchase and i can understand that as well. Especially if you are a console gamer, then why buy a Wii U over your prefered system that has more games.

Couldn't have said it better tom. I own a gaming PC, a Wii U, and a PS4. The ONLY thing I played on the PS4... was bloodborne. Now it collects dust because it's a very outdated (and overpriced at that) platform vs PC. Might sell it actually. Meanwhile, my Wii U gets played at least once a week when friends are over and we want to have a few drinks and just have a good time playing smash or pokken tournament or Super Mario 3D World or Mario Kart 8 or.. Nintendo have NEVER been about power. Nintendo have ALWAYS been about games and content. The WiiU didn't fail because of specs it failed because of a poor marketing campaign and ironically a lack of launch games and content. Judging from what was revealed at E3 Nintendo HAVE learned from the WiiU's failure. Power isn't necessary for Nintendo to be successful, the 3DS proves that fact. Plus look at the 6th gen Pokemon games and the upcoming 7th generation, their graphic are shit compared to the things Sony and Microsoft are having on their machines but those games are still successful and help drive Nintendo's otherwise underpowered consoles. You do realize that when they had Call of Duty and Assassins Creed put to Wii, it was not at all the same game built for the 360 and PS3, right? They literally remade those games from scratch in order to get it to work. That's a lot of freaking work, but because the Wii was successful and profitable, they were willing to do it. That's what third parties are looking for. Something profitable. That's why the Vita, despite having better specs than the 3DS, did poorly on its third party support. The Vita simply wasn't profitable. It's the same with the Wii U. Yes, specs factor into it but they only factor in so companies know what's the most common specs for a console. Both the PS4/XBOX ONE have very similar specs, so the third party companies will develop a game that could run on both systems and since the Wii U is underpowered and doesn't sell well, it gets pushed to the sideline. THAT is why the NX needs to have specs that match up to current gen standards, otherwise third party companies will ignore the NX just as the Wii U was ignored.

Came out too late. The 9th (I think) generation of consoles is just around the corner now, so why bother investing your hard-earned cash in exclusives for a system that will shortly be lending it's new releases to the next. I would love me some SF0, but i'm not gonna dish out hundreds of dollars for a Wii U just for that one game after doing just that for the 3DS and Omega Ruby back in 2014. You might say i'm a hypocrite given the fact that the 3DS is older and may even have a more stagnant game library than the U by now, but considering I already own a plethora of consoles AND handhelds, and that i'm more heavily invested in Pokemon than star fox, I don't want another system to further clutter up my already-bloated collection. Star Fox is a much shorter game with far less replayability/post-game than Pokemon anyways. There are so many ways to play Pokemon in the long-run. I could battle with friends throughout the course of my life, or trade with them. I could try to collect every shiny, or try to get perfect IV's on every Pokemon. I could pursue league challenges, and even establish a legacy for myself as a gamer by becoming the world champion. All of those things and then some to me, is more than worth the 350$ I paid for the system AND the game with. You just can't get anywhere near that with the U or Zero, which is a rehash of 64 anyways, and I already own 64, so why should I care? Sorry if that may have dragged on a bit in the form of rambling. It took me a while to type this comment up.

In past videos he holds his "PC Master Race" status, saying how Consoles are far inferior to the PC. Then the console market actually starts to produce consoles that are similar to the PC and he laughs it off, telling the channel how stupid that idea is. Along comes this video and "oh no, Nintendo aren't competing with the industry, their specs are going to be shit. Reggie said that they aren't in the specs war with Neo and Scorpio. Nintendo hasn't learnt anything from the Wii U's failure!" The Wii U failed for many reasons, 1) It wasn't cheap, the gamepad costs half the price of the console and that's why it didn't sell as well as the Wii (too expensive), 2) Since it had completely different architecture, it made game developers struggle to see profit because it took upwards of twice as long to port their games to it. Hence why there was little to no AAA third party support 3) It was called a Wii U ffs, the marketing was complete balls. I'll say it again, we have no idea what the specs of the NX will be and going ahead and basing an entire video from a quote from Reggie as to what they will be is click bait-ee as hell.

To be fair, as Steam gets more and more powerful with their "console", other TV consoles will slowly be replaced by PC (specifically Steam), and Nintendo will survive. And if processing power is the MAIN concern, the TV console will die in an instant compare to PC--it's surviving just fine so far, and only challenged because the fun and exciting CONTENT is now also achievable through Steam for cheaper on BETTER specs. Wii U was bad not because of spec, but because lack of good content. Nintendo never meant to compete with the two big consoles---it is a survivor, not a champions of a war. I propose in the future, the game industry will be dominated by PC/Steam and Tablet gaming, with Nintendo being the ONLY console company doing exactly the same as before---not dying, but not even close comparing to PC/Tablet either.

You are correct in addressing that Nintendo is too optimistic and unrealistic, and they are not input innovation enough and it will lead to their downfall. Of course, despite it not doing well and is more or less just a glorified Wii with a slightly more interesting controller. They shouldn't even TRY to be the most powerful and most exciting TV consoles. The answer is that they need to focus on creative gameplay instead of hardware, however, because if you want to compare specs, the PC is going to win in the end. Nintendo need to do BETTER in terms of gameplay than what they did with Wii U. They should focus less on hardware, unless it supports their supposed focus, which is GAMEPLAY CONTENT. VR is here, and it is mainly for PC gaming. Remember. The most powerful console never wins a console FIGHT---but it will win the console war, and PC is that console. Nintendo shouldn't fight that war, they should fight for survival not win, and the answer to survival is to be DIFFERENT and INTERESTING enough people will buy it. Their targets will be the casual masses seeking unique experiences, not hardcore gamers who want triple A games. They will have survive the same way that Tablet (specifically iOS and Android devices) will win the handheld "console" war in the end.

And console wars were mostly about specs, even tho PC killed both company's console. At least by hardware. Nintendo was just there (like you said "survived") and didn't even TRY to race with them. If building a PC would be cheaper, I think Xbox and PlayStation wouldn't even exist now. I think however, that Nintendo would still exist, because of the tons of first party games they release. Their games couldn't be compared to others on the market, making them still running. Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of Nintendo, but I still think they are the "best" company making consoles.

Though if you just want a PC with the specs of a PS4, it's not that bad. You just need to invest in ONE great PC, you can game, you can work, you can make videos, you can do EVERYTHING while a console can only do games and maybe a few more. This. Sega had done a lot of damage to their reputation with some very bad decisions with the Sega CD, 32x, and Saturn. At a time when Nintendo had wrestled the crown back from them post Sega Genesis. The Dreamcast suffered for the sins of it's fathers. It's easy to forget how ephemeral these types of markets can be. I remember when the original Sony Playstation came out, it wasn't an easy sell to gamers. No serious gamer had any respect for Sony as a video game magnate. Fast forward to today and the Playstation 2, 3, 4, and beyond... are synonymous with video gaming.

+atomic747 Never said there weren't. Difference is that some of those exclusives are so because of consoles hardware limitations, not some intentional agreement. This would be the case for example of Star Citizen and ARMA 3. Other PC exclusives (mostly indies) do so because it's just easier to do. Console exclusives, especially AAA ones, have no good reason to do so other than "money" and adding fake value to their worthless hardware.

alternine I'm considering getting a used ps4 this Christmas now that Gundam Breaker 3 is finally coming to the US. I'm actually excited for Tekken 7, Kingdom Hearts 3, Yugioh, Legacy of the Duelist, Fallout 4, Elder Scrolls 6, etc. And I'm not even planning to grab the New 3DS until I see something I actually really want on it, and my Wii hasn't been touched in ages while I play PS3 as well. I prefer games, not consoles, and Nintendo just happens to deliver a little faster.

The problem with Nintendo's recent console wasn't the hardware,the problem was:a). the lack of variety in games,basically all you have is platformers and more family friendly stuff,but nothing for adult gamers,mainly because 3rd party developers abandonded the Wii U.I mean seriously,how many Super Mario games can you release?! and b).the stupid controller,which was promoted as big innovation but in reaity it was clunky,seldom used in games and if they used it,like in the new Starfox game,it was a desaster. If you could get the HTC Vive for $150 Not a single Oculus would have sold And the HTC still out sold it in these early stages and because of better marketing or at least more effective marketing. The Wii a proof that a console with bad hardware can sell with marketing. And the PS4 and Xbox One proved that hardware means shit. Speaking processing power, the XBox one and PS4 were about 50% weaker than I hoped for the new console I remember when they announced they were based on an APU with the equivalent power of a AMD 7850. I was so disappointed. I can literally build a $300 for used part that outperform them by a lot.

As an employee at a video game store during the launch of the original Xbox and Nintendo GameCube, there is one factor that you've failed to address: The PlayStation 2 could play DVDs right out of the box. It seems like a stupid reason to buy a game console now, but back in the day DVD players were expensive and people were FAR more willing to spend money on a system that played both movies AND games. While it was far from being the major purchasing decision (the library of games came first), it was definitely a factor in most families' decision to purchase a system at the time.

Parents that trust Nintendo IP to not have Link dismember monsters, or Mario to jump over charred corpses IS the target market Not that Nintendo doesn't ever carry games with violence, those titles are intended for the parents... who can't afford a grown up console. Asking Nintendo to rise up to more competitive specs will not only raise the costs of sales, but also to the developer who typically has to purchase the dev kits (usually 10-100) needed to make the games for the intended platform. Cheaper materials means more developers. Opinions like the ones in this video are on the level with asking Hasbro to update GI Joe to a level that suits an older buyer.
