I still sell original Nintendos, Snes, and all retro game systems at my shop. I'm pretty knowledgeable at games/history and I'm always looking for more knowledge. I get at least 10 young guys/gals that will try and tell me how gaming was in the 80's. Most of them are in their early 20's. I politely tell them that I lived during those eras so I feel like I have firsthand knowledge. They tell me they watched a few KZbin videos so they know how it was. Makes me want to bang my head on a wall.

I feel like people have yet to make the distinction between motion controls like the Wii had and gyro controls. The base Wii controler was a gimmick, nothing more. It was just a slightly less convenient way to press a button. Gyro controls, at least in my experience, have been pretty damn good for the games that implemented them.

Why are people comparing the graphics of a console? If you care about graphics don't buy a console at all. The PC makes all consoles look as bland as the Switch screenshot. Hell the first screenshot, I genuinely thought that was the PS3 until Rich said otherwise, and I'm not even running a 1070. Anyway, I'm 20. I don't know a whole lot about Nintendo, but lets school Rich who certainly is old enough to be my father. I've owned a SEGA Master System with built in Sonic. I've owned an N64 and worn out more controllers than I can count, not that it was hard to do with the N64. I haven't had the SNES but I've certainly emulated a lot of the games and read far too much on the history of the console. Yes, it absolutely had some graphical capability. You say the Gamecube wasn't popular because of its tiny disk space? Sure thats true but you seem to forget the N64 was up against the PS1, Dreamcast, and SEGA Genesis with CD format and was still popular DESPITE its tiny cartridge space. You said that the Gamecube wasn't popular because it pissed off developers? The SNES pissed off developers royally and then some. Some of the workarounds and weird moves developers had to pull to get SNES games looking the way they did were insane, it absolutely pissed off developers. Or how about the PS3, one of the most popular consoles ever made and I imagine a console you'd support as the most powerful of its generation, in a generation where multi-platform games were key, but it was also quite possibly the most developer-enraging console ever made. It was designed with the intent of pissing off developers. The CPU was intentionally made to be so different to every other console that Sony hoped games simply couldn't be made as multi-platform and yet it still got every major title. Now I like you Rich, and I agree with your main point of it requiring some degree of power (which it has), but you seem to be going a little overboard demanding it be hyper competitive even though it simply won't be possible to put Xbox One power in that tiny form factor with a half decent battery life and competitive graphics, let alone at a viable selling price. But more than that I just don't like backwards logic and a lot of your points are contradictory. It seems like you're just picking out whichever point suits your argument rather than stopping to think what really makes sense. Some of the major points being that Nintendo's attempt to grab exclusives went too far on the Wii, games were excluded as business decisions not because of poor hardware, and their target audience is killing the console in a western world where little children want to gun down an airport lobby with a group of Russian terrorists. Quite frankly the Gameboy and all its iterations did quite well, including recent DS, much better than Sony's far more powerful PSP especially in the west. The biggest problem with the Switch isn't the graphics, its that the casual target audience (who don't care much for graphics) won't pay for a monthly subscription on a console they don't use much. And once again its the CPU which matters with multi-platform games, not the GPU. As you can clearly see games can still be ported over to a weak GPU just by turning off effects, cutting polygons, and dropping the resolution.

Olivia Lambert I think Rich knows that because of the form factor the Switch can't be as powerful as it would have to be to directly compete with the competition. The whole point of the video was to make a point to people 20 and below that are spreading misinformation that he knows first hand the history of Nintendo and can tell them that; Nintendo used to actually care about power. The only critic I have about this video is the fact that age shouldn't be such a big deal. I'm 20 and I knew all of what he said in this video before I ever even subscribed to his channel. Age doesn't mean a thing here, I may not have been around during the release of the SNES, but I have played multiple times and looked into it extensively.

What makes Nintendo "Nintendo" isn't the specs, it's how they aren't afraid to shake things up. The NES and the Gameboy revolutionized the market, the SNES improved on what they had built and added a few 3D games, the N64's joystick and rumble pack, the Virtual Boy's attempt towards VR, GBA's e-cards and then the GBA SP's rechargable battery and backlit screen, DS's touch controls, Wii's motion controls, 3DS's 3D, Wii U's reattempting the GBA-Gamecube link and now the Switch is trying to bridge the gap between home console and handheld. They only cared about specs when caring about specs was something new. Otherwise, they wouldn't have made the gameboy monochrome, the virtual boy red, the SNES weaker than the Neo Geo, the N64 use cartridges, the Gamecube use miniDVDs and the DS.

Just because "gameplay counts" (which, in Nintendo's case, is ALWAYS THE SAME or mediocre at best these days), doesn't mean I have to accept playing with years old tech, behind any other thing on the market, while not being much cheaper, especially Switch. People only buy it for the franchises, which are mostly dead except Mario, Zelda and Pokemon, which people keep buying the 1000th version of the same gameplay. Imo, the WiiU only has two good games, Smash Bros and Mario Kart. And there isn't even a Mario Galaxy successor on it. Switch is even lazier, just relaunching games, Splatoon 2 looking just the same etc. It will die SO fast, no matter how many people buy it at launch.

Except the Game Gear was $275.43 when it released, and the GB was only $174.18 when it was released, both adjusted for inflation. Sure, you could buy the more advanced system, but you're paying $100 more. And what games do you get? Sonic, I guess? Goes to show why the Game Gear sold only 10.62 million units, and the Game Boy sold a massive 118.69 million units, a little over 10 times the amount.

This. So much this. There's so much misinformation surrounding the 1983 crash it's not even funny. The number of people I've heard say that ET single-handedly caused the market to crash, or that the crash happened worldwide, or that the launch of the NES immediately undid the damage, makes me want to punch a cat. Not that I was around at the time either, I just don't like revisionist history (especially something as recent as 30-odd years ago) being spread around and passed off as hard fact. I prefer to do some digging on these kinds of subjects, rather than just regurgitate what Wikipedia or some "general history of gaming" article has to say on the matter.

Actually, Nintendo didn't stop caring about graphics along the way. Nintendo has always been about innovation. Seeing that graphics innovation was not exactly a big leap anymore it ceased from being innovative, so they resorted to other areas. That decision proved to be the right one with the Wii and they kept their train of thought for the Wii U (the most poorly marketed console in the gaming history). Switch is pretty powerful for a hybrid. The price and life battery has to be competitive, so a Switch as powerful as a PS4 would cost around 600 bucks and would have a battery spam of 20 minutes. Honestly? Glad there is still one company with enough balls to be innovative!

I think Nintendo is the only company that realizes that they''re never going to out do PC specs, unless they want to charge ludicrous amounts of money. So they try to offer unique utilities and gimmicks to compensate for PC's. They want to make console gaming a truly different experience. Yes, they do often take missteps in their approach to making their consoles different, but I still respect the general idea.

FOR THE GAJILLIONTH TIME, NO, MINI DISKS DIDN'T HURT THE GAMECUBE! THAT'S NOT A FACT AT ALL! AND I WAS A GAME JOURNALIST BACK IN THOSE DAYS, SO I WAS THERE TOO. HECK, THE GAMECUBE EVEN HAD A SUBSTANTIALLY BETTER THIRD PARTY SUPPORT THAN THE N64 BECAUSE OF THAT! IF A GAME DIDN'T FIT IN A SINGLE DISK, THEY JUST USED A SECOND DISK A CALLED IT A DAY! THE GAMECUBE CAME RIGHT AFTER THE FIRST PLAYSTATION GENERATION, WHEN THAT WAS A VERY COMMON OCCURRENCE, SO IT WASN'T CONSIDERED A BIG DEAL! Seriously, not only did I write quite a bunch of news back then, but I also attended presentations, and I never got from developers, neither explicitly nor implicitly, that they didn't release a game for the GameCube because of the mini-disk. At most, they maybe cut some soundtracks down by a few tracks, or didn't include multilanguage dubs (that happened in Europe, where I live), but the game was still released on them. There were some extra compression, yes, but that's hardly a major reason to not release a game in a system. However, you know what I did hear A LOT? Developers saying "our audience just isn't on the GameCube". Which back then was code for "only children play the GameCube and our games ain't for children". People tend to forget this, but Nintendo had a really, REALLY BAD REPUTATION during Console Generation 6 (which started in Console Generation 5) of being a kids console in a time when most gamers were either teenagers or people in their early 20s at most. The first gamer generation hadn't reached later adulthood back then yet. And most people in that age bracket didn't want to be perceived as children as if their lives depended on it. The nostalgia boom hadn't kicked it just yet either, so we didn't have that "excuse" to play classic Nintendo games. That perception is what provoked the infamous backlash against the art style of "The Wind Waker", for crying out loud! It was also a time when both gamers and video games developers really started to want the medium to be perceived as a serious art form, so they wanted more "mature games" for more "mature players". Nintendo even tried to shake that up with the exclusivity of the "Resident Evil" games, which as we all know now, didn't work out. In that regard, the fact that the console's main color was a Fisher Price toy-like purple hurt way more than mini-disks ever did! There's a good reason why Nintendo dropped that color later on in the console's circle and focused more on the silver model. Although unfortunately that was too little, too late. Still don't believe me? OK, then explain me this: WHY WASN'T THE XBOX 360 HURT BY THE SAME PROBLEM? Have you forgotten? The XBox 360 had DVDs while the PS3 had Blu-Rays. What happened when a game for 360 didn't fit in a single disk? That's right, they used several disks, sometimes with extra compression. Heck, pretty often they designed the game from the ground up to fit in a DVD, hence not having to use the extra space of a Blu-Ray at all! However, the 360 had exactly the target audience most companies wanted, so they had no qualms about fitting their games for it.

I remember when Nintendo advertised with: "Now you are playing with power". Great times. Also, during the N64 era, they bragged so much about the Nintendo "Ultra" 64 being so much more powerful than the competition. I remember an advertising showing Killer Instinct arcade while a voice spoke these lines: "If you want to win the battle between the next generation videogame machines, you need to have the power to do so. With Nintendo's new Ultra 64, you have the power to win the battle". I saw that on TV back in the day. The console was still refered as "ultra" at the time, before Nintendo renamed to just Nintendo 64. It was always about the specs, about the power and superiority, until Wii happened. Great video, keep it up!

For your information kids and some grown ups out there. Super Metroid was the Witcher, the Crysis, the fucking benchmark of its time, super castlevania iv melted faces of hundreds with its impressive graphics, sound and art style, and don't forget Donkey Kong Country, Zelda ocarina of time, Perfec Dark, etc... Resident evil 0 was an exclusive title for the N64 later ported to Gamecube because they were the only consoles capable of handling the game's main feature, not even the Dreamcast was capable to do the trick. Resident Evil 4 was one of the best looking games of that generation, the port for PS2 had to be downgraded!. So yeah Nintendo was about specs in the past. But since the launch of Nintendo Wii people invented that stupid excuse about the graphics; "duh graphics doesn't matter", "if the game is fun I don't care about the graphics", "nintendo has never been about specs". I saw this shit born in 2006, before that magazines, fans and tv shows always boasted about how powerful nintendo consoles were. Anyway about the downgrade in this video I think that's lazyness, 1st party nintendo games will always show off the Switch capabilities if developers don't achieve those results, either they don't care of again Nintendo is not giving the devs an accesible tool to work with.

How would Nintendo take over? They've lost to every iteration of PlayStation except for ps3, and they only even outsold that and the xbox 360 because of a gimmick, not with a good library of games. Besides that, Nintendo hasn't won a single console generation since SNES edged Sega Genesis. The ps2 sold as many units by itself as the N64 (which is admittedly great in its own right), gamecube, and Wii combined. It sold more than everything in the xbox line combined by itself. I wouldn't be surprised at all to find out that the various PlayStations combined have sold more units than all their competition combined have sold, from Sega Saturn to xbone x. Besides ps3, PlayStations have typically sold double what all the competition has sold, and triple in the case of the ps2. I love mario and pokemon and everything, but Sony quite obviously dominates console gaming and has since they got into consoles. Quite possibly the single greatest thing Nintendo ever did was piss off Sony and drive them to make their own gaming consoles.
@char_gards6 жыл бұрын
John Watson IV I won’t deny here that what you’re saying makes sense, but the switch is a brilliant concept - and probably the only good one. But a Nintendo console with the power of a PS4 pro or an Xbone X would still be amazing. There’s no doubting that it probably won’t happen, Nintendo are set with the switch, and I’m not sure if they’ll take the 4K route, but by god if they do, it would be good

Gardscoigne Vids I don't disagree, and really for what it is the Switch seems like a fine console outside of the fact that it only has 32 gigs of memory, but I don't get how people think Nintendo has always dominated console gaming when the only two gens they've won have been the two closest ones there were, and every other console war has been Sony wiping the floor with everybody else.

Well said man. I had to laugh a bit when you included some life-history in on that gaming passion. It certainly added a bit more to actually be alive when the media of that time was touting and hyping things at the time. Just because one can wiki the history, doesn't mean they have the full picture of what the actual experience of that time was like. Little nuances and details get lost with textwalls vs being there. I distinctly recall Nintendo having constant pissing contest with Sega of "specs". I also recall the fanboys of the time using the buzzwords and "Bits" to tout how much "better" their system was. Much like PC to PC fanboys. Old traditions never change, but it seems Nintendo has..and not entirely for the better. Curious to see how the switch gimmick plays out in the long haul.

Im 34 yrs old, I was alive for the nes, snes, n64, sega master system, megadrive (aka genesis) Neo Geo! Hah remember that one?! =D, yup i was alive and gaming for all of it. And yes nintendo was about the specs once upon a time but does days are gone now. Nintendo can't compete anymore at a spec level with big green and big blue so they are now today about the first party software and providing a different experience. They have pivoted over the years to become a nintendo experience machine. So they don't need third party support, they just need awesome first party titles and a very affordable price point to stay in the game. nobody else can provide the nintendo experience and as long as they are doing that, people will play nintendo games =) Yup i say it again, it makes no sense for Nintendo to try and beat the specs of Microsoft and Sony and they really don't have to thats all I'm saying. By the way I never said that Nintendo never was about the specs ;). If I already own a PS4 then I really have no interest in a Xbox One that is essentially the same thing, I would much rather get me some Nintendo Fun as a second gaming console, especially if I don't already own a portable gaming device =) then I get two for the price of one! its a done deal! Nintendo just have to work hard at getting does first party titles out there, at least two a year and I'm good! So far it seems they have a pretty good line up for year one, Zelda and Mario! hell yeah! oh and I never got to play the latest Mario Kart so that makes it three killer titles for me to look forward to =)

Betongbarnet By the way, nobody can live up to Nintendo's entire 126+ years history. If according to Rich's thought in this video, nobody can talk about Nintendo's whole history. I'm pretty sure there are still some people don't know Nintendo used to make cards, toys, love hotels etc. However, Rich does make a few good points, but his view on Nintendo's previous decisions and failures are inaccurate. PS2 was a success because it has DVD player and lots of killer apps. GC does have it's flaws but it was still a decent console. Technically the only console that was an absolute failure by Nintendo was the Virtual Boy. That failure made the creator of Gameboy kicked put from Nintendo, which was sad… That Dragon quest graphic comparison video shouldn't be taken as a true credit, Switch port hasn't released so there can still be improvement.

Nintendo's legacy is carried by their nostalgia. I agree with you; the "Nintendo" experience is unique. That is why I hope they actually make games like they used too instead of trying to be innovative for the sake of being innovative and not bringing more quality games to the table. They have all this creative genius and squander it on gimmicky games like 1,2 Switch.
@Dailyblazer197 жыл бұрын
Betongbarnet but that's the problem. Nintendo as a business has been failing for the past 3 years. The Wii U flopped; it had good 1st party and 2nd party support, but the titles like Cod, Assassins Creed, etc... that attract buyers of the hardware en masse didn't stay on the platform; after 1 year there was no incentive for most people (many of which don't have that nostalgia) to buy it. Now aside from Skyrim, which ppl can't seem to tell if it's the SE or not, third parties have extended even less of an offering this generation. Steep, FIFA, Skyrim.....that's the best third party support on offer right now. No Battlefield 1, COD, FFXV, hell no real franchise that has a hefty following behind it has landed on the Switch besides a 5 year old game, and the last generation port of FIFA 17. Nintendo needs to really sell this hardware to incentivize other studios and publishers to come on board or survive yet again another train wreck to hopefully realize that the market left them behind almost a decade ago. Otherwise they'll go bankrupt because the last thing Nintendo will ever do is quit making hardware. It's been apart of their business strategy for years and without control over that element then they'll fall apart as a company.
@VideoPine7 жыл бұрын
KuroTengetsu91 Nintendo had some bad years between 2012 and 2015, but they are profitable again thanks to certain lucrative first parties and the 3DS family. There isn't room for a third high end console in the market, so nintendo has to go a different route in order to stay profitable. As long as they are highly affordable and can offer a great first party experience like Mario Kart, Zelda, PikMin, Super Mario, Metroid, Pokemon, then they will be a great second console for a lot of people. Why would I play Assassins Creed on a nintendo console when i have a ps4? Handheld is a smart move for them, they have proved time and time again that they are the kings of handheld, nobody can touch them there =) Just look at the latest numbers for Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon.
@Chris_Redpilled7 жыл бұрын
Exactly! This is why the Wii U was a success. To hell with specs and 3rd party. All I need is a few first party games, and a console with a gimmick that makes it different from the others.
@Mechaghostman25 жыл бұрын
eh Nintendo's consoles stayed competitive up to the Gamecube with regards to its specs, but not so much with its handhelds. The Gameboy was outdated at launch. When the Wii came around, that's when Nintendo switched their focus to the casual gamers over the hardcore ones. The Switch's graphics are forgivable though, considering it's a handheld.
@ASHtheSLUGCAT7 жыл бұрын
people say that the wii started the gimmicks but R.O.B. was a gimmick and so was the virtual boy. The reason Nintendo doesn't try to make "normal" consoles anymore is because they realised the best selling consoles did not sell well because of graphical capabilities alone but for other reasons as well. I know Rich said most of them already but I'll name some again. NES sold well because of R.O.B., gameboy sold well because of portability, playstation sold well because It had more 3rd party support due to the cds, ps2 sold well because of it's use as a cheap dvd player, wii sold well because of the motion controls. I know all the console's sold well for other reasons to but you get my point. nintendo switch seems like it wants to combine the portability of the gameboy as well as a combination of VR and motion controls. If consoles now aren't gimmicky then why does playstation have VR? or why did the ps3 and xbox360 try to copy the wii?

the the Its because systems cant sustain themselves, companies cant survive for long without 3rd party games. Ms, Sony, Nin make money off all games sold on their system and since there are easily 20 3rd party games to every 1 1st party game, those companies live and die by how many 3rd party games sell on their system. And people tend to buy systems that offer them the best graphical version of that game. Now if there is minimal differnce then gamers will go off brand or controller or 1st party catalog, like back in the nin v sega days, or ms v sony...but for the last decade nintendo hasnt offered gamers the same graphical experience for 3rd party ganes and you can see how ms has taken nintendos spot since the wii came out. sure the wii sold a lot of consoles but it didnt sell any games. it had a horrible attach rate whereas the 360 had a phenomenal attach rate. wiis collected dust, 360s and ps3s were used daily.

I find it funny half of the people bashing The Switch's graphics aren't even PC gamers, if you want top of the line graphics invest in a PC and move on. I'm a PC gamer who also happens to game on consoles as secondary platforms and i'm fine with The Switch as long as the games run decently. But as far as the Nintendo fanboys go they are pretty much off their rockers, that's no surprise whatsoever.
@Axisoflords7 жыл бұрын
The House Of Gaming Not an excuse. The Switch is underperforming and overpriced and it's going to hurt it, just like it hurt the Wii-U. Hardware too weak to handle many of today's AAA titles, so third party support is leaving me highly Skeptical.
@athenagaming54967 жыл бұрын
Same too, The best hope for the thing right now is Nintendo dropping its price and taking more aim toward "3DS like" experiences. The home experience on the go didnt work with the Vita and it wont work with the Switch.
@AnimeFanFTW257 жыл бұрын
The Wii U wasn't hurt from underpowered hardware or being overpriced. It was hurt because of how poorly it was advertised. Judging by how the Switch is being pre-ordered massively, it's not being hurt by anything, it seems. And too weak to handle AAA titles? Last time I checked, Nintendo is a AAA company, and all their consoles run all their games fine.

You forget the Master System wasn't what Sega released against the Famicom in 1983. That was the SG-1000, a system on par with the ColecoVision. The Famicom throatfucked that system mercilessly, forcing Sega to make the Mark III (Master System) later on.

I'm a Nintendo fan and I enjoyed this video. I do have one critique - would people play Doom on a Nintendo console if it was the most powerful one on the market? Nintendo obviously believe the answer is no, which is why they keep doing something else. For better or worse, the Wii was the third best selling console of all time, and it's the only Nintendo console in the last four generations to win. People also forget that system had fantastic first party games - two Zelda, two mario galaxy, two metroid, plus smash bros, mariokart, the pack in Wii Sports game, and a bunch of other stuff. One billion pieces of software were sole for it - at 9-10 games per console that's not bad at all. Nintendo concluded, for better or worse, that there isn't space in the market for three superpower systems, and their system needs to have a unique selling point. I think the Switch does this - it isn't the most powerful, but it's powerful enough to run modern open world console games wherever you want. Nintendo are also supporting it with big first party games in the first 12-18 months - Zelda, Mario, two fire emblem games, Splatoon, Mariokart and a smattering of third party games. I think the Switch will do way better than the WiiU.

You play Doom on the PC with mouse and keyboard in 4k 60fps, if you like AAA graphics orgasms play on PC, if you don't have the money wait and save up for a PC and when you want a console buy Nintendo because it's different and not trying to compete with PC on power which is stupid.
@44730217 жыл бұрын
doctorale666 ++++++ Honestly it's pretty dumb hearing how much PlayStation and Xbox market their system's power. It's a fucking joke compared to a PC of the same price and basically no selling point besides some mediocre exclusives and 1-3 really good exclusives. So far there's not a single game on the PS4 and Xbox one that have convinced me to even think about buying the consoles. Maybe KH3 but if it comes out on switch I'll just get that then LUL

I'm a Sega fanboy and I clicked on this video thinking, "Oh God, what are the idiots my age saying now?" and I've gotta say BOI. I am a Sega fanboy. I chose the Genesis over the SNES, I chose the Dreamcast over an Xbox (original OR newer) and I new ALL of this stuff and find it ridiculous that people my age try to sound smart like this. I am only 14 and I cringe so much at all the crap people my age AND EVEN OLDER say about retro systems and companies nowadays.

Trying to work out how you chose the Genesis over the SNES when you are only 14. Not having a go at you or anything just find that part of the comment funny. I'm 26 and I barely remember the NES or SNES and you weren't even alive then.

I know. I buy retro consoles and stuff because frankly I enjoy using them more. I chose the Genesis A) because I got one free and B) because at the time I thought the graphics were better. I learned otherwise from a technical standpoint after a couple years.

So that is why Nintendo replaced the Wii U and stating that it is a console first and a handheld second?? And guess what is the competition in their portbale market?? Their own 3DS system!! All it is going to achieve is split up that userbase further. The only other competition is mobile gamers who play casual microtransaction filled games on their smartphone, while refusing to buy full fledged games that actually costs more than a few bucks. You really think the switch will impress them so much that they will lug around a second device and pay 300 bucks or more to do so??
@KTSpeedruns7 жыл бұрын
What bugs me is people take these comparisons as a definitive stance on how good a console is and how good the games are on a console. So it won't be as powerful, so what? If the game are fun, then that's what should matter. But too many people are too big of graphic whores that they won't even consider playing a game or rating it above a 1/10 if it's not 1080p.
@FriendlierFetus7 жыл бұрын
Games aren't that fun when they play at 30 fps, and still look like garbage. Nintendo needs to stop with all these dumb gimmicks, and focus on the actual console and it's specs.
@Bazonkaz7 жыл бұрын
That's been apart of their downfall. They don't deliver the same quality games like they used too because they want to create a new gimmick instead of delivering games like Thousand Year Door, and open world Mario, Metroid Prime, ect... instead they do spin offs or gimmick oriented versions of the game. Seeing that new Mario game gives me hope and Zelda, of course, looks like it's going to be game of the year.
@TheVectorSilver7 жыл бұрын
What's wrong with spin-offs?
@Bazonkaz7 жыл бұрын
TheVectorSilver Their main player base doesn't want them. Metroid Federation Force, Color Splash, Pikmin 3ds, games like that failed miserably because Nintendo likes to be innovative for the sake of being innovative and not actually make quality games.

The only reason I even give Nintendo the time day in this era is because of their "stupid fucking decisions" I am 33 and primarily a PC gamer now, I give absolutely zero fucks about Playstation or Xbox anymore, They barely have any exclusives I would care about enough to even entertain buying one as all they amount to for all their "power" is gimpy bottle necked PCs with proprietary storefronts and apps. The fact that in this homogenized landscape of Triple A sludge Nintendo is the only non indie major company doing anything worth paying attention to, if I want the hottest over hyped 8 hour annual shooter I got a PC that runs it better then the consoles can, Nintendo systems are the only ones I buy anymore because they are the only ones offering experiences you can't have on PC.

That's one hell of a story arc you have there, glad you're still alive, sorry that gaming is a bunch of asshats whining about everything, though. In my opinions, if the Switch has good games, I really don't care how it looks, though I will say the display of the Switch Vs PS4 (Pro?) on that one game was... Kind of staggering. But still, if there's games, and they're fun, I'm buying them. Like for one thing, if the new NieR game is on PS4, I'm getting one. Gaming is about games, sure visuals can really help depending on the game, but I hate when that's all anyone thinks about. Nintendo has always been for more cartoon-ish styles, sure I can understand the 3rd party support issue if the system can't handle the same games others do, but otherwise I just don't see why people just want to complain. My opinion; wait. Wait until about the end of this year, or until a game of interest comes out, that person can buy it, play it, and if they don't like the game, the console, the service, or all of the above, return it, and maybe wait a little longer, if it still isn't satisfactory by the Switch's release date next year, then just ignore the console entirely. that's how I roll with consoles, if a full year goes by, and I don't feel compelled to buy it for something yet, then it isn't worth the time.

The PS2 was actually weaker than the GameCube. If you look at Resident Evil 4 side-by-side, you can clearly see that the GameCube looked a lot better. Hell, some GameCube games still look great like F-Zero GX, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, and Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker and Twilight Princess.

@rongrover36507 жыл бұрын
There is one important point to add to the discussion, and that is the Game Bo. That was the first example of a "who cares about tech specs" Nintendo success, and Nintendo's handhelds need to be added to the discussion for the whole context. My take on the whole thing is that Nintendo didn't want to court the GTAs, Tomb Raiders, and Halos to tarnish their family friendly image and the "Pixar appeal" of Nintendo games to older gamers ended up not working out. So Nintendo pivoted to bring in new gamers with the DS and Wii and was very successful. The Wii U's issue was that the casual audience that flocked to the Wii and DS moved to mobile or left the industry, leaving the Wii U's appeal to the core audience of Nintendo fans that have always bought their system. (and yes, I am old enough to have played the NES, SNES while new)

Honestly the only thing saving Nintendo is the name. If any other company had taken as many miss steps as Nintendo has in recent memory the company would have broken its neck from the fall down the stairs. Switch has paid online for one NES/SNES game per month and you need an app on your phone to use it anyway. You, the customer, are doing the work and paying the big N for the privilege in exchange for a retro rental a month. Only Nintendo could get away with this because the fanboys will defend anything but their own interests when it come to Nintendo.

King Bradberry At home, sure. Some other places probably, but I'd be careful if using it just anywhere. Can the system even use a wired connection at home though? I'm genuinely curious now but I suspect not. Wi-fi can be fickle at times.
@Dailyblazer197 жыл бұрын
WoWisdeadtome well said....written....whatever. Despite a change in leadership it still seems that the prevailing heads within Nintendo don't understand that they're in competition with Sony or MS. People still compare their hardware and games...or lack thereof. I don't know what it's going to take for them to put out appropriate hardware and messaging to attract developers to their platform, but the titles, features, infrastructure, and customer focus isn't their. They still think people want some quirky little toy to take around or play with at home and refuse to accept their role within the industry. At some point the market will decide that their missteps outweigh their former prestige and leave them behind. There are only so many Pokémon, Mario, and Zelda games that you can make and remake before people stop caring. Maybe these babysteps (Bayonetta 2, Splatoon, No Region-Locking) indicate their willingness to change, but their blatant disregard to consumers' demands won't be admissible forever. I can only imagine how many years they have left.
