I can't shake the thought of them creating a hybrid Mario kart/ Mario Journey (?) in a Forza or that new open world Sonic game. Where there would be plenty of themed lands that offer collect-a-thon platforming but also, to travers to different lands in the (hopefully) planet sized game map, procedurally generated Kart Tracks would span oceans/plains/deserts. In a WindWaker style, the longer journeys would end up being loading tracks for the next world to pop in.

If I had a nickel for every time a Zelda game on one console was rereleased for the next gen console as a launch title - said next gen console then proceeding to sell like got cakes, I'd have two nickels - which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice. Guess the moral of the Story is Nintendo needs to release a new 3D Zelda game before the Switch's successor comes out.

I think you undersell a bit how massive SMO was for the series. Also I'm not entirely sure an open world Mario makes as much sense as an open world Zelda because it relies on levels being very different in terms of themes and biomes etc. where Zelda has always been one cohesive world only cut into bits because of technical limitations. I'd l9ve to see a seamless Mario but I don't think it can be as huge and iconic as BotW. Regarding Mario Kart, I think that one big argument that MK8 DX had that the next one may not was its gargantuan content thanks to the inclusion of the WiiU DLC. Thanks to that it felt like a very good deal too. Can the starting amount of cups and tracks MK8dx had at launch be the new "normal" and MK9 launch with as much ? Honestly, I have my doubts. So the new Mario Kart will probably have to compensate a possible lack of content with being entirely new and exciting. It's possible it will do so, but it will likely have a bit of a handicap imho.

I think bowser’s fury already drove away the excitement a little. Breath of the wild expose a completely fresh franchise(besides long time fans) to casuals, that intrigue can be replicated by donkey Kong. Besides, there are more continuity to DK. Mario Kart have high sells because every who was already bought the system got it, not the system seller like breath of wild or animal crossing was, hence it either be a double launch with DK or year 1 title.

I don’t know if people would be as excited for an open world Mario as they were for an open world Zelda. Mario is the bigger franchise, but it’s bigger for its gameplay. It’s fun, it’s accessible, everyone can have a blast with a Mario game. Zelda is big for many reasons, but one of the foremost is the world, atmosphere, and lore, which is usually what people love most about open world games like Skyrim. I’m not sure if tens of millions of people will be salivating at the mouth to be immersed in the Mushroom Kingdom. I may want that and you may want that, but I think that desire is more of a Nintendo fan thing. It would be very popular, but it might not blow up like Breath of the Wild.
