Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess and Metroid Prime could easily be a horror video game
@shinjukutanuki4550Ай бұрын
Majoras Mask yes, Metroid Prime yes, but I think Ocarina of time would suit better as a horror game than twilight princess. I mean the Shadow Temple :D
@UndomaranelАй бұрын
@@shinjukutanuki4550 Eh, disagree. OoT was very much an action game with flavor sauce. Jump scares were everywhere, especially with the invention of Z Targeting and 3D combat. The Shadow Temple wasn't even horror compared to Beneath the Well, it was just horror themed action. Ravens and scythes and chains and a floating boat could have been re-skinned into anything; there were hidden walls everywhere else in the game so all the Eye of Truth temple needed was that element, not purple and morbid. The Dead Hand, Redeads, and the Wall Masters were the worst bits of horror, and only relegated to specific parts of the game. You could teleport past or run away from the redeads at Castle Town as adult Link, not exactly Silent Hill level there. Not even those eye lazers in the Spirit Temple could compete, despite clearly being necromancy. Would you say that the Brenden Fraisier Mummy movie was horror, or action/ comedy that had horror moments? Same diff. Majora's Mask fits as horror because of the constant narrative of the moon falling, curses, death, healing and finding peace, and crisis after crisis after crisis. There's even that scene after you defeat the mini boss of Ikana where you have a conversation with the skulls as they pass into the afterlife! That's supernatural and horror, let alone Mikau's passing, Darunia's hauntings, and every direct implication of the Deku son... and don't get me started on transforming into Mikau to hunt for Lulu/ his mate's eggs after they were kidnapped by pirates, then hatch INTO A FREAKING SONG. If Adult Link from OoT getting turned backing into a child and being forced to relive puberty wasn't bad enough, they make him go through that and worse in the sequel... and then do it repeatedly over a three day period or watch that cutscene on how you, the player, failed to save an entire world in a way that would make Sephiroth smirk. Twilight Princess had horror elements throughout the game as well, and the existential dread of seeing everyone you cared about as shades, trapped in the Twilight. You had the body horror of transforming into a wolf and dealing with nakers Midna, who wasn't exactly friendly for most of the game. The monsters were all misshapen and twisted, none of that cartoony colors we see now! Again, you feel a constant dread and presence of Twilight, a misfiguring and defiling element, everywhere. Every enemy you encounter, corporeal or not, has Twilight. Cut scenes show disturbing imagery constantly, from that trippy Dark Link/ Ilia betrayal recreation to Twilight corrupting people to Ganondorf flat out murdering Sages after ripping the blade from himself. Nothing like that was in Ocarina, the closest being defeating Ganon with the headshot. Nothing like that was in Majora, the closest being the Mask shaking Skull Kid off and growing it's own pulsating body. For a game to be horror I feel it needs to have that presence constantly, not just look it for a segment or two. Hollow Knight? Could be classified as horror due to the themes, body disfigurement, existential questioning and the constant atmosphere of corruption. Those elements are everywhere, not just Nosk or in the Abyss. Meanwhile games like StarFox 64 that are light hearted action that only go horror mode for the final boss like the brain/ eyes that was Andross? Not exactly horror, just a horrific design choice.

*Thank you* for noticing that the Forest Temple theme from _Ocarina of Time_ belongs in a goddamn *eldritch horror* movie/game! I've always thought this, always thought it was somewhat out of place feeling in regards to the rest of the game. I understand that the Forest Temple comes better into perspective as you progress further into the adult timeline, what with the Shadow Temple and having to contend with Dead Hand in the well, but it just seemed so strange and bizarre in contrast to everything up until then. It really gives a sensation of like "the training wheels are coming off now" kind of thing, and kid me had to play one of the songs on the ocarina to take a break from the BGM and get through that temple.

Just knowing you need to escape, need to get out of this place, *fast* . There's nobody in here with you, and that's what's unsettling. I held a box cutter (closed) in bed with me as a defense, and kept all my lights on. I watched a video on the unique music design of Pikmin, and how it's made of random chords strung together to be a unique patchwork song every time you go into an area. How, if there's work being done, a new instrument plays. If there's monsters, a new instrument plays. If Olimar is at low health, a new instrument plays. And they all can stack. And that Submerged Castle ignores all of that. And only plays two sets of its song. The one when you're alone. And the one when you're NOT.

I don’t see enough folks on the comments here talking about the World of Drawcia, but I’m not surprised either. Kirby: Canvas Curse is one of those games that gets really overlooked given it had to contend with Squeak Squad and Mass Attack on the DS. All of those games were very unique, but Canvas Curse.. there’s just something about that game and Drawcia herself that disturbed me for some reason. The game has such a fantastic soundtrack and the environments are so unique given its playstyle. Each world held this odd uncanny feeling of just.. a false sense of reality?? The world of Drawcia is especially interesting given how.. abstract and discordant it is. Chaotic colours and a background reminiscent of flesh, the awful grinning paintings, and a disturbing soundtrack.. not to mention Drawcia as a boss. That chilling feeling as she sheds her form, laughing hysterically as this painted reality itself melts and tears apart, that laughing becoming more warped until Drawcia Soul makes its way into the fray with that ear-shattering screech. I truly wish people would play it for themselves

My unsolicited opinions on some tracks (WARNING: LONG) 0:01 - *suspense.mp4* 3:50 - heavy, otherworldly, it feels like I'm hiding from an alien or creeping around a spaceship. The clattering sound in the background made me jump. 6:30 - pure dread, it sounds like I've found something I shouldn't have and I'm slowly realising I'm doomed. 8:36 - *Childhood Fears: The Song* 10:27 - creepy but I also keep expecting a sick beatdrop from that synth sound in the back. 20:15 - it feels like I'm in a spaceship that has crashed and something really doesn't want me to leave. 21:53 - a heavy and malicious track, it feels like an angry entity that wants to crush me is lurking nearby. 23:40 - oh, something has gone VERY wrong on a cosmic scale. 25:24 - empty, like listening to a storm from inside a bunker, and you might not be alone. 40:44 - *time is running out. Run.* 47:08 - something very, _very_ evil is mocking you as you realise that you're trapped. This one creeps me out quite a bit. 1:10:06 - if "what the hell happened here?" or "we were too late" was a song. 1:37:53 - this one is a classic for a reason. It sounds like something mankind can never understand. It's taken root inside your head and the noises won't stop.

Your review of Submerged Castle is VERY accurate. Even as a kid in the mid 2000s, that tune always creeped me out. ALMOST NOTHING in Nintendo's catalog of music unnerves me like that, and I'm a huge horror fan.
@LucreciaCrescentIsBestGirl9 күн бұрын
Your opinions on World of Nothing (23:40) are pretty much spot on. The basic plot of Super Paper Mario, the game that it comes from, is that you have to collect a series of items called the Pure Hearts and use them to stop the void from consuming all worlds. That song plays in a world that you failed to save in time. You get warped away just in time to not be consumed, but when you return, there’s nothing left but a white void. None of the people remain, only a few ruined pieces of buildings can be seen. Even the Pure Heart is left virtually powerless. Also, while it isn’t as accurate, your thoughts on Light and Darkness (1:10:07) are still pretty close. It plays at two points in the game, and both of them are very intimidating, as they accompany the character Zant, who is arguably one of the most imposing villains in the series. The first time it plays, Link and his companion Midna, and you the player, feel like you’ve just about won. You lifted the veil of twilight from the land, you’ve gotten the Fused Shadows, now all you need to do is find Zant and defeat him. But he finds them first. He strikes down the guardian god spirit of the region without moving a muscle, plunges the area into twilight again, taunts Midna as he takes away the Fused Shadows and traps Link in his cursed wolf form by driving a shadow crystal into his head. Then the music starts as Zant continues to mock Midna for caring about a human, then offers to let her join him. She refuses, so Zant releases his hold on the light spirit, whose awakening injures Midna to near death. The second time it plays is when you confront Zant in the Palace of Twilight. It starts to play as Zant removes his mask (figuratively and literally) and reveals his true motives, nature and insanity, which arguably makes him even more frightening than before. The eerie music matches perfectly with him twisting and contorting his body as he explains how he turned to madness and made a pact with his master, Ganondorf.

Very much, but it’s also eerie in a very enjoyable way. It perfectly fits with a once-peaceful world that was twisted into something horrible.

A whole other kind of spooky is the song that plays outside the library from Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon. Haunted hotel vibes

I think some of the songs from that game could qualify for an entry in this video

The invincible Shadow Queen theme from TTYD deserves to be here. EDIT: parts of the Z23 Sama-ru music sounds like a certain other lovely sound lol

Maybe the reason I'm so whacked in the head has something to do with spending my entire childhood playing... like, all of these

I'd like to think playing games on a regular basis like that probably did something to our psyche lol. Certain concepts get a little too normalized when you're exposed too much. But also I regret nothing. These games still slap.
Cool list. I’d suggest adding the music from the first level of Batman Forever snes and also the uncle’s house music from Home Alone 2 snes. Both are pretty creepy in my opinion.

Lavender Town from _Fire Red/Leaf Green_ sounds less scary and more somber, at least compared to the original _Red/Blue_ versions.

if you want somber, lgpe has one that just sounds mournful

Given how often Nintendo leans into horror and nightmare fuel with a lot of their games in specie sections it would be cool if Nintendo made another horror game. I mean the last horror game they made Eternal Darkness revolutionized the genre with the sanity mechanic being used in other games like Amnesia.

Cave of the past and giygas from earthbound would fit nicely here. Maybe that one forest from that wario game.
@Aguard3_5 ай бұрын
"Cliff that time forgot" would also be nice, but as a "punishment" song in the ending for bad choices made throughout the game (Bad Ending). And yeah, "The Place" is really missing there (man, this thing gives me hard creeps)
