[Try4ce] I got the Game Boy Camera and Game Boy Printer on the first day they were available, but my favorite memory of the device was how I used the letter stamps for intro text and title screens in the movie projects that my friends and I made in high school. I would use all of the available storage in the camera to make multiple text slides, and even some text animations. The number of available slides and the larger size of the text, sent to my VCR through the Super Game Boy, made it a lot better for titling than say, Mario Paint. I miss the days when we had to get creative with limited technology to make videos with analog media, so it's fun to see the Game Boy Camera used as a video tool again in this episode!

Fun Gameboy Camera factoid: Those Pokemon sprites you saw (Charmander and Bulbasaur)? Gameboy Camera is their *first* appearance in the United States, as it launched before Pokemon Red and Blue. This caused confusion at the time, as people had no idea what those characters were when the camera first released.

This video was really cool. I loved seeing the narration as it is seen on the Game Boy device itself through the GB Camera lens. Recalling the camera sure takes me back. I never owned one myself, but I thought it was a really neat idea... and, combined with the Game Boy Printer, it made for what I thought was some pretty advanced consumer tech for the time. A personal printer? A camera for your Game Boy? Mind-blowing. I appreciate the acknowledged perspective of what the device meant to users at the time, rather than comparisons to modern tech and how rudimentary this stuff is today. Looking at older games and technology through this lens, to me, is really important... if only to put them into perspective. Good stuff.

One thing you can do with this device is to plug it into a Super Nintendo using a Super Game Boy, reverse the console, and edit the Super Game Boy palette so that the different colours match the irl colours. Of course, you only get 4 colours, and the Super Nintendo only has so many options, and even it might be impossible to properly match the irl colours, but it’s kinda cool to see as you can make the colour of your hair on camera the colour of your hair, and the colour of your face to the actual colour of your face and so on, you could make a pretty crap colour photo. Or you could use several colour filters in black and white mode to capture colour photos, but that’s kinda complicated and useless.

Even today the Game Boy Camera can be fun to use. There's a certain quality to the pictures that cameras of today cannot replicate, even at their crappiest settings. Of course, you need some sort of external device to extract the pictures, but a modern cell phone camera can do just fine for that.

+Tasia Boldyreva In the main menu on the camera, there is an option that says "Run", and if you try to use it you get the image(s). This is because it's meant to be used by the Game Boy Printer; if you hook one up and then hit the Run function, you'll be able to print off your photos.

The opening line of this video is an understatement. Seriously Nintendo hardware wise used to be just so ahead of the times. Look at all the crazy Japan only stuff they did with the Famicom and SuperFamicom; online banking in the late 80's man. ONLINE BANKING! And they had those machines to write games to on your own rewritable cart... Seriously they were like too far ahead.
