Nintendo's Killer Instinct Arcade PCB - ULTRA CHEAP!?

In today's arcade VLOG I talk about acquiring an arcade PCB I honestly thought was out of reach, Nintendo's Killer Instinct. This board has become insanely expensive in recent years and now often tops out at $1,000. Would it be worth it to take a chance on a presumably working Killer Instinct board without a hard drive? Was it too good to be true?

I’ve read that a lot of the legs on the surface are fragile. That custom chip gets HOT too, even with the heat sink. No wonder so many of these burned up. I’m definitely looking into getting a fan and mounting it over that area either on the board or in the cabinet.

Sounds like you got really lucky! This was my holy grail. It blew my mind in 1994. I also got very lucky a subscriber of my channel that didn't live very far away offered the machine to me at a really reasonable price. When I was picking it up, he gave me what he said was a broken KI PCB. He'd had it for years after replacing it back when they were still cheap. I was curious what could be wrong with it but it didn't come with an HDD. So I ordered a CF drive, plugged it in and to my surprise, the PCB appears to work fine! I hate to be a greedy hoarder but I genuinely love this game and have no plans to sell the cabinet. I'll be keeping the PCB as a spare in case anything happens to mine. Don't feel bad about buying it. I kind of did at first but the seller told me he wanted this game to go to someone who loved the game and would enjoy it instead of flipping it.

Nice! Sounds like you got super lucky as well. I’d definitely hold onto a spare as well if I had one. If you sell it you’re a flipper and if you keep it you’re a hoarder. What a conundrum, lol. It’s annoying thinking how expensive a replacement is if anything ever goes wrong. I’d keep it as insurance if I were you too. I’m thinking about how to attach a fan but may wait and just position one on it once it’s in a cabinet.

I remember first seeing KI in the arcades back in 1994/1995. The graphics were mind blowing. This was so ahead of anything that the next gen consoles at that time could process. Definitely one of the most graphically advanced games from that time!

Right!? The hype it created for the “Ultra 64” was wild at the time. Blew my mind that it then instead came out on SNES. It was really impressive what the SNES was capable of later in its life. They really got a lot out of that console (regardless of special chips).
@MagisterHamid

@@ScarletSprites yeah that was a very impressive port. By 1995/1996 producers had really learned to cram out the SNES hardware and some really impressive games were released. Apart from KI you also had Street Fightet Alpha 2 and Gundam Endless Duel.

Killer Instinct 2 is so expensive too these days unfortunately. It would be cool to run both but I probably would realistically only play the first one. I’ve seen guys get both games running off of the same board but I’m not even sure I’m willing to attempt that knowing how fragile everything is here. We’ll see. Glad you liked the arcade background shot. I played with different angles and lighting until I got something I liked and was a little different than the blue lighting I had been using. I’ve wondered about that tbh. I guess it would need Wrestlemania or you’d have to add extra ram yourself to be able to play all games. I’m kind of curious what the next multi might be. You shouldn't feel guilty because you paid his asking price. I had a similar situation this weekend when I bought a Street Fighter II: Champion Edition in a Tempest cabinet for $200. When I asked the seller if the PCB in the pics was included he didn't even know what that meant. I picked it up and removed the PCB and connected it to my supergun and the picture was iffy so I reseated all the chips and it now has a perfect picture. It's the cleanest board I own and it looks brand new! Now like you, I am looking for a more appropriate cabinet to put the board in. As for your video, well done as always! So, being one who has fixed a lot of Killer Instincts, I'll say what the number one problem is. The CPU. As far as I know it wasn't used in anything else that's easy to get, the cpu alone costs $300-400ish if you do find them. A lot of boards died in the 90s (due to buffers dying) and people took the cpus off to put them on working boards. Which is why so many are missing the cpu. The modern problem is these cpus come loose and people try to reflow them (we're talking a small pitch, hundreds of pin quad flat pack cpu), mess it up and the board becomes junk. I have a few cpus just in case anything goes wrong, but yeah....the price....it's not because of really "Nintendo", but a lot of people had good memories of this game in the 90s and they want to pick it up. Coupled with the quite annoying problems this board has, I can see why it costs so much. Also the buffers on the board are quite odd, so they are hard to get too.
@ScarletSprites
@ScarletSprites 2 ай бұрын
Every now and then I see someone offer up a working CPU. I think on KLOV someone was selling them on the condition you send your non-working board to Ken for repair. Just trying to keep people from buying and hoarding them. Seems somewhat helpful that progress has been made on getting KI and KI2 playing on the same board.

Arcade 1up has a smaller replica cabinet with 1 and 2 and Battletoads games, and a larger pro version coming soon but delayed. The pro version will almost be the size of the real thing. They did a good job getting the games to work on their hardware. Nintendo and Midway references are replaced with Microsoft and Arcade1up/Tastemakers references and Nintendo and Midway logos are missing from cabinet but you can mod the cab with Nintendo stickers from ebay and a new marquee with Nintendo and Midway on it from various graphic companies, Szabo's makes slip on plastic marquees in 1up size, and KI is offered.

Man... I remember picking up an original KI board about 15 years ago (I'm in Lancaster, btw), and it was somewhere around $200 with flash drive. It was a flaky board, though... I had to bend it slightly for it to play (lol). I eventually parted with it, and that was obviously a mistake! I then gravitated toward NeoGeo and the Hyper 64, in particular... that was an incredible, metal beast that I also parted with far too soon. Prices for ALL of this stuff is going wayyyy up. Who knew! Anyway, major congrats... what an awesome buy you got!

Right!? People often ask how to start collecting for Neo Geo and my answer is to find a time machine to 2005. It's wild and I don't think anyone really expected this. @PaulXMann Жыл бұрын
@@ScarletSprites Do it! LOL... I had Fatal Fury Wild Ambition, SamSho 64, and SamSho64: Warriors Rage and I thought they were way more fun than people gave them credit for back in the day. Unlike the KI board, though, I found a new-in-box Hyper64 mobo, and it was a gem... all I had to do was replace the battery! It hooked right into the jamma harness on my 2-slot MVS cab, so it was easy to switch between NeoGeo MVS games and Hyper64 games. Sad thing is, when I parted with my full-size "big red" NeoGeo cab, I basically threw in the Hyper64 mobo and games for free (WTF was I thinking?!)... but again, this was several years ago now, and at that time, the market was a LOT different! Anyway, I hope you go for it. The Hyper64 doesn't get much love (it's never even been emulated!), so it's getting to be quite a rare thing, these days!

There used to be a pool in the backyard and the previous owner installed a second breaker box in the basement. That’s the end of the perks though. It was touted as an N64 game but they amazingly got it ported to SNES. Unbelievably good for it’s time. My friend ended up with the one store display of Fulgore which I think he still has. But yeah, that SNES port was pretty good and a bit of a surprise after seeing the “Ultra 64” hyped in the arcade.

#parenting I feel ya on that, and vlog format is fine, no need to highly produce videos every time. Just keep yourself out there telling us what you are up to. Ah... Killer Instinct. Before I go down that rabbit hole, I want to share a story that was similar to yours... only for me it was Street Fighter Alpha (which is also the biggest contributor as to why its my favorite fighting game). When I was in college, we had a common lounge outside of the book shop and cafeteria and there they had couches, tables and always 2 arcades (usually a Neo Geo cabinet and something else current'y). For the longest time they had Street Fighter Alpha. The gamer types would spend their whole lunch breaks or hours in-between classes pumping quarters into this machine. It was a gaggle of us that regularly learned to play new characters and it was highly competitive. It was also early in it's release so as we were playing we learned how to play as Dan and Akuma and the Dramatic Battle which was fun, but expensive (basically it was $1.00 and win or lose, nobody got to keep playing. There was this one guy I used to play with, I think his name was Tram... and he was awesome. We'd all be mastering Ken/Ryu, and he'd get at Sodom and kick our asses... then we would want to learn Sodom, then he'd learn Adon and kick our asses with him... then he got good at Dan, and he would sometimes beat us with Dan even though we'd be picking Akuma. I never met someone who hit Akuma's "Ten" super more consistently. Anyway, we got friendly and he used to teach me all the dial a combo's and explain what made this character better at that character. I was good, but this guy coulda competed he took it so seriously and thought about ways to beat people all the time. As soon as Street Fighter Alpha was released on the Playstation 1, I probably played it 3-4 hours a day at home and developed these monster calluses on my thumbs from playing so much. Anyway... got that story out of my system... back to Killer Instinct. Killer Instinct took the best aspects of Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat and merged them together... all while introducing great mechanics, the best being combo breakers. It was so fun learning how to string combos together, juggle and pull off those intense Ultra combos. It remains one of my favorite Fighting Games and it's on my short list of cabinets I want to own... so if you want this guys opinion... Yes, Dedicated cabinet... you have my blessing. One thing I must say about Killer Instinct and its probably my only criticism and no, its not the super lame finishing movies that the game didn't need... its that the game wasn't fun solo outside of practicing combos. The game was intense competitively, and it was great to stuff peoples high hitting combos with a well timed combo breaker. The game sports incredible graphics for it's time... has some of the most intense sound effects and booming narrators. The game just made you ignore EVERYTHING else in the arcade and that was absolutely by design. The port to the SNES (and I'm pretty sure thats the ONLY place it was ported)... just wasn't great. Killer Instinct 2 port to the N64 was spot on... but I didn't like it nearly as much and just didn't have that nostalgic hook in me like KI1. I'm really happy you scored this... you rolled the dice and rolled 7's my friend... well done! I think you have almost every cabinet at this point on my home dream arcade... lets see... Big Red - have it Big Blue CPS2 /w Darksoft - have it CPS3 cab /w Darksoft - have it Naomi cabinet - Have it Smash TV - have it GI-Joe - have it Killer Instinct - have it Mortal Kombat II - Not sure if you have this or not NBA Jam - you sort of have it Daytona - have it Star Wars - Don't have it Dragon's Lair - Don't have it, but I feel like you are gonna have that one some day Rampage - You sorta have this one, I think you have a different version that I would prefer, but still... you got a Rampage Tron - Don't have it Root Beer Tapper - Don't know if you have this one, but you've talked about it

Man, you’re so right about playing in the arcade costing a fortune. I sometimes wonder if it was more expensive then or now tbh. There was another guy from Peru who went to school with us who did EXACTLY what you just described. Dude would just learn new characters and beat your ass with them while you had just figured out a second combo with genera-Ken. Damn, you really have the rundown of my cabs. Regarding Rampage, I have the World Tour board. I almost grabbed the original cab but Joe Szabo beat me to it a little while ago. That would have ruined my 90s vibe though anyways, lol. I can still play the original game via MiSTerCade if the mood strikes.

KI is not a 1000USD board, one thing is seeing it listed for that price, another is seeing people actually paying that much for it, with patience KI/KI2 is a game you can get for $150-230 pcb only, reasons, are: first is not that good of a game, is Nintendo branded yes, but in the arcade world that doesn't mean much, most people who happen to collect arcade stuff doesn't care for these, i.e. is not THAT sought after, a person who comes from console world may think otherwise though, second, PCB build quality is a POS, these boards break a lot, just by staring at them one may think, and I'm not talking about the hard drive but the board itself, solder job and tin quality used on those customs is poor to say the least, then you have the bakelite griddle which seem to be what? 2mm thick?, compare that to some Data East pcbs which in my opinion are among the most well constructed arcade pcbs, and these KI pcbs look like flimsy sheets of paper in comparison.
@ScarletSprites
@ScarletSprites Жыл бұрын
It’s a $900 board even on forums sadly. If you cruise the recent sales listings from several places you’ll see that. The listings from eBay used in the video are sold listings. You can debate the best offer listings, but even broken ones are being unloaded for $500. My purchase and the ones you mention are unfortunately the exception today and not the rule. Totally agree on the build quality of the board. It’s not great and there is a fear that if you look at it wrong something on it is going to break.

These boards are expensive because flippers and scammers got it wrong, the boards that are REALLY expensive are those that have the ki2 ide controller which allows you to run either Ki1 or KI2 in one board.

KI is a simple fighting game. Not that much better than ClayFighter or Rise of the Robots. I personally think it's not even worth to buy it for 250$. Well, you use MiSTer... But on the other hand you can always sell it for 800$ in the future. But that is all personal preference. I only collect good games. There are many bad Neo Geo games. I would never collect them, only to have them all. I would use MiSTer for the most part and only collect some iconic arcades like Street Fighter 2, Virtua Fighter, Daytona, NBA Jam (some of yours :) ) etc.

@@ScarletSprites Yes, you are right. Maybe Rise of the Robots is a bit too far ^^ , but Ki is not a good fighting game. The graphics were stunning for it's time and are still beautiful, but that's it. The mechanics are simple. It's not that much difference with the new Ki series games for Xbox One. Some want all of them when they are getting deeper and deeper into collecting and some only the good ones they play. But for sure everyone is a different enthusiast. And special childhood memories and connections change everything. By the way, keep on like that. Love your channel!
