In today's VLOG I take a look back at what I consider my greatest gaming achievement. I'm very interested in hearing what everyone else lists as their top moment in gaming. Perhaps a rare pickup, completing a collection, 100% completing a game, meeting a celebrity, of just having a fantastic day at a convention with a friend. Drop your top gaming moments in the comments below!

My greatest gaming achievement is creating Game Sack. It's led to so much. There are tons of things that have happened as a result so I'd just say the creation of and maintaining the show itself was the achievement.

Oh man, I have no doubt that that is special to you. Thinking about the snowball effect that it had for large channels such as yours is really cool. I have to think working on it collaboratively with a friend was probably very rewarding as well.

It's not just a personal achievement... you established your own, distinct voice on KZbin and managed to be heard amidst an ocean of screamers, and that's damn near miraculous. Everybody seems to have a gimmick on KZbin; yours was dispensing with the crap and just covering games, with only brief shenanigans near the end.

The one that comes to my mind and where I had a witness was destroying Rugal in KOF 98. I was living in Osaka and my Aussie buddy just popped in while I was playing the game. With Heidern only I managed to outmaneuver and beat Rugal flawlessly, all of his attacks were countered, I had a perfectly timed answers for everything and gave him a dose of his own SNK medicine. My buddy just stood there and said "You endbossed the end boss".

I beat Samurai Shodown on a single quarter. It was the summer of '93 and I was just waiting the few months until I joined the Air Force. I had almost no spare money, working at some retail store until 5 and then volunteering at my church each Friday at 7:30. But after cashing my check that fateful Friday I stopped by 7-11 to treat myself to a $1 chili dog and a Slurpee before heading to church. In that 7-11 in the corner by the windows was a brand-new NeoGeo machine with Samurai Shodown. I didn't even look at the other 3 games as that was what was up on the attract screen, flutes playing when that samurai (Haohmaru) stands and slices through the cement lights and a big tree, in two swipes. I had been in there before but I'd never seen that arcade game there. I only had a couple of quarters but I burned them on that machine and that night I fell in love. From then on out I would get a roll of quarters when I cashed my check at the bank and stop at the 7-11, have a $1 chili dog, a Slurpee and use up that roll of quarters on Samura Shodown. Over that July into August I studied the screen each time I died to learn new move sets and honed my skills, eventually getting to a point where I would run out of time before I ran out of quarters. Finally, after a few months of weekly sessions I beat it, all on a single quarter, no continues, no extra quarters, just the roll with some of the paper peeled off the top and a single quarter taken out of the roll. I have always loved Street Fighter II and other fighting games but that game on that machine at that time and place has always felt like a great accomplishment.

There are so many, because I completed a lot of games... but I'd have to say renting/buying titles in the mid-90's at Blockbuster for the NES and SNES on Friday nights after work and finishing them before they were due back on Monday were the greatest. Being a subscriber to Nintendo Power Magazine really helped with that! It let me know which games were worth renting/buying and which ones weren't. I still have those books, as well as my NES and SNES and all the purchased games from those days! Also, making a hole in one at Pinehurst No. 2 on my OptiShot 2 simulator with a 6 iron on the 181 yard 6th hole, carrying it within a foot and one-hopping it right in wasn't too shabby either! It was a majestic effort that never left the flagstick! I'll always remember that! 😎

Your Battletoads story warmed the cockles of my boomer heart. I'm really glad you picked a gaming story instead of a collecting story. I think paying hard games for mastery is more rewarding than collecting ultimately. I talk about this in some of my videos but your comparison between the Virtual Racing cab and beating Battletoads really illustrates this. If you asked me this question a few years ago I would have said beating Battletoads was my seminal achievement. I discovered what input lag was playing that game and was forced to get a crt and original hardware to beat it. That changed my life. But right now I would have to say getting a 1cc on Street Fighter 2 Super Turbo was my greatest achievement. Beating Akuma at the end is VERY challenging. The feeling of accomplishment I got from that was huge but more importantly I found out about Fightcade. After beating ST I wanted to try playing real people and found my way over to Fightcade. I found out quick that beating a cpu Akuma is basically the price of admission to be able to compete with even the lowest level players on there. I still play St on Fightcade more days than not. I'm wearing an ST shirt as I write this. I found my game. I will play St for the rest of my life.

Mine happened quite recently and it's building my own arcade cabinet. Mind you, I'm as far away as "handy" as you can imagine. As an apt. dweller for most of my life, it was always just a fantasy to have anything like that (I would literally have reoccurring dreams of having one). Now that I'm living in an actual house, it was time. I was truly obsessed with getting it right. Researching forums, buying and learning how to use all the tools, emulating (what's that?).. all of it. I don't think I even had a tape measure when I started. It's essentially a big blue replica and I'm proud to say, when ppl come over they assume I simply bought it. And one dude to this day thinks I'm lying that I made the thing haha. It taught me so much. Still get off on seeing the glee, rush of nostalgia and surprise when ppl see it for the first time. Quite frankly, I think it's my proudest achievement overall..

I have a couple. One is restoring a rusty dilapidated mess of a MVS U4 25 that was mistreated and carved into on location in Southern California - I'd argue it's near perfect now. Lots of tlc went into that project. The other is having completed the 2-All one credit clear of R-Type II on the hardest setting with the Japanese ROM set off original hardware multiple times. I also have a massive high score on r type ii that I haven't ever seen topped online.

In the late 90's or very early 2000's I went to a New Years Eve celebration at the house of a friend of a friend and he had a Candy Cab, which blew my tiny mind as I'd never really thought about the concept of having your own arcade machine in your house. One prior to that(in the mid 90's) was playing a PC FPS on a LAN, it was Action Quake and the network (of four PC's) used thicknet (10 BASE5).

A lot of my game collecting achievements happened by initiative and pure dumb luck. When the PSTV bombed, I jumped all over it, and picked up a second deluxe version just for the extra Dual Shock controller. Now they're like $100 on eBay. Same deal with that $1 copy of GameCube Fire Emblem I found in a library bookstore a few years ago, or the Ninja 5-0 I found at GameStop for eight bucks, or a Game Boy Advance AGB-101 at Goodwill for $10. Stay alert, take every opportunity you're given, and strike while the iron is hot, and you're sure to be happy with the results.

First would be restoring my dedicated Killer Instinct cabinet. It was my first restoration and it not only was a learning experience but it came together beautifully. More recently was finally picking up a game I was searching forever… an NHL open ice. Not only was it an original dedicated cab in near mint condition, it was never vended! It even had a goody bag of spare parts in the coin box. But the best part it has a plaque on the bezel that it was donated by the NHLPA!

Rygar had its very own emulator back in the day, didn't it? It was practically a revelation when MAME offered multiple games. Mostly derivatives of Pac-Man, but it was a start!

In 2020 during the pandemic. A freind called me up asking if I wanted to buy an original Killer Instinct Machine. Without hesitation I said YES. Killer instinct was a game I fell in love with because my father worked at Iguana / Akklaim studios in Austin Texas and they had an original killer instinct machine inside their work office. Come to find out. The freind who let me know about the arcade machine was mowing his neibors lawn when he asked about the arcade machine in his neibors garage and the guy let my friend know it was for sale. My friend got me his contact information. And after asking about where he bought it. He said he used to work with my father at Iguana studios and he had bought the machine when the company went under. I now am the proud owner of the same exact machine I used to mash buttons on when I was a little kid :)

Awesome stories there. Battletoads was no joke. Old school best moment also involved Tyson's punchout. I was the jr high video game nerd and happen to mention to folks that cared that I beat tyson recently after renting the game. Word spread like wildfire around school. I had no idea so many were playing nes and much less punchout. Football jocks and the like were like "yeah right dude". So, it came to a point where I had to put up or shut up about that feat and my cousin setup the time and place at his house because he had the game. To my surprise when I got there a small crowd had gathered when i got there and the spotlight was on. I had to go through the entire game because I don't think we knew the password at that point. Long story short, I put Tyson down after going through the roster of boxers and let me tell you it was the best mic drop moment of my life when tyson fell. Nerd screams and high fives all around. My current day achieves are Destiny 2 related. I have solo flawless emblems for all the dungeons in the game so far. (3 man raids essentially)

Hard to say for me, probably earning the platinum trophy in Wipeout HD for PS3 back in 2008. You needed to be one with the game to get first place on the hardest difficulty and had to beat one of the developer times on a time trial. I tried again when I got the Omega collection on PS4 but my muscle memory and reflexes are gone. Another is probably when I used to play the online PC game Guild Wars in the mid 2000s, I managed to complete all the elite dungeons and the hard mode 100% across all campaigns. A recent one would be getting the S+ rank in Resident Evil 2 remake on hardcore difficulty. Perhaps not that hard looking back on it but the time and practice to do something like that these days for me is quite rare.

Also, I find it very rewarding to beat cryptic games without looking up any hints or using a guide. Standouts would be Metroid (NES), Final Fantasy 1 (NES) and Phantasy Star II (genesis). Lastly, I would say console modding. I’ve really gotten into modding old consoles for better video output/ sound or better screens in the case of handhelds. It’s fun and there’s a great community of people associated.

Thanks for sharing your story and I don't think I can top that. To be immortalized in Nintendo Power I personally think is an S tier gaming achievement and hard to top. When I heard Street Fighter 2 was ported over to the SNES and how amazing it was, I had to have it in my home. I was in my young teens and have a garage sale. I sold all my Ninja Turtles and other action figures and old NES games that I was into anymore. I needed a little over $250 to get it with SF2, back then it game with 2 controllers. I remember having to drive 30 minutes out of town to a Target. I called them ahead of time and asked if they would hold SF2 under the counter. Back then in small town when you could do that. Sure enough they held it and I was the first of my friends to get the SNES and the SF2. It was as amazing as I could hope.

Good video topic. In gaming, I generally have a short attention span. So, going back to the NES and finishing games is very satisfying, Of the titles I finished, the original TMNT game was most rewarding. Grinding the scrolls was well worth Shredder's defeat. Recently, I have been learning basic electronic troubleshooting and repair. Getting a deal on a NBA Jam TE board and repairing the sound board is my latest achievement. Hearing "He's on fire!" was so so sweet.

One of the reasons I like nes games is cause they are so short. There are a lot of good arcade games and shooters you can clear in about 30 min. I think my shortest clear is Altered Beast. Takes about 15 min

Nice stories Joe, I especially like the Mike Tyson story, that was hilarious! Cant even stand but his brain had that game mapped haha. That's awesome. I get asked this question A LOT and honestly I find it difficult to answer given I've been playing video games since 1977 when my Dad introduced me to Pong. I also have worked and still work in the video game industry so I have a metric ton of memories, finding that one for me is difficult. I would have to say being a part of Westwood Studios back in the early days making games like Eye of the Beholder, Command & Conquer, and Blade Runner. Honestly though, now that i'm giving it another think as I write this... maybe when my Dad came home with a Commodore VIC-20 and Buck Rogers cartridge. I was desperate for a computer when I was a child, I obsessed over any picture of a computer, made computers out of cardboard that replicated those computers.... I wanted one so bad. When I got that VIC-20, my life changed forever. Maybe that was it. I'm still looking for that answer! Love the video today dude, keep em coming! Hope wife and kiddo are awesome

Felt pretty pleased with myself when I finished Pulstar (Neo CD) on a half decent difficulty setting. Also, set a lap 0.5 sec faster than my mate to qualify for Dutch Gran Turismo finals, or so I thought, bc my PlayStation subsequently crashed before I could save it to memory card, which was needed as proof back in the day. Still gives me nightmares.

In college I played a lot of Street Fighter Alpha in the arcade. Easily $5-10 a day for an entire year on my lunch hour… and played against some really good players that were really cool and enthusiastic and I think they loved that there were other like minded people that saw it as a breath of fresh air between lectures. Anyway, when SFA released on the PS1 I wore my thumbs down playing it for hours a day… beating it with every character on every difficulty and very seldom lost a match. It was also the time in my life where I drank with friends every weekend and we would play drinking games… and I came up with a drinking game involving “Dramatic Battle” mode where you square off against M.Bison 2 player as Ken and Ryu. If you ever played this mode you quickly learn that Bison is a son of a bitch. He can super through both of you, he throws you if you get near him… they really cranked up the difficulty because hey… 2 on 1 isn’t fair. The drinking game started with… every time Bison throws you… drink, and if you lose a round… drink. We would play for hours and polish off whole cases of beer doing it. As we got better, we added rules because we just weren’t drinking enough… so we added the “knocked on the ground” drinking rule… this was at the point where we often “Perfected” Bison… which was really tough because even if you block a super… you take “chip damage” so you had to be quick with an “Alpha counter”. One day.. I was wanting to play and my regular Dramatic Battle partner challenged me to beat Bison by myself (meaning, Ryu would stand there, not moving or blocking… all the while sharing the same health bar). It took me a few tries but eventually I beat him… it took a lot of zoning and keeping Bison on the ropes so to speak because as soon as he opened up… nailing someone with a super could drain half your health bar. I started practicing it by myself and eventually double perfected Bison in Dramatic Battle. I think I only ever did it three times and one time drunk… as it wasn’t just skill, but a lot of luck because with him warping around.. there are just some things you can’t avoid (like a warp into a throw against an “AFK” Ryu). Long winded… but that’s mine.

Greatest gaming achievement? If we’re talking NeoGeo, I got Metal Slug X on AES for my birthday this year; got it for $600.00 instead of the normal asking price of $5,000.00. MSX is now the crown jewel in my gaming collection. Sorry, Top Hunter, you’re no longer the most valuable game in my AES library (last I checked, it was valued at $2000.00), but I still enjoy playing you from time to time! Outside NeoGeo, I actually got all of the Metroid games (barring Federation Force; it sucks, and sadly I have the long-lost CD-i Metroid game that I didn’t know I didn’t need or want for that matter: Other M). The Famicom Disk System version of Metroid was the last one I got! Outside the crappy ones (yes, I count Galactic Pinball on Virtual Boy) I got them all; even all of the Smash Bros. Games! In terms of merchandise, a good friend of mine purchased a Gex plush (once worth $10,000) for me for Christmas one year. My Gex collection is all completed... yeah, that’s not saying much, but it’s something. People just love to give Gex a hard time-comparing him to the cancer of gaming (among many) Bubsy The Bobcat himself. I hope to do a LONG overdue retrospective of him & all his games-even the playable cameos he made throughout the years. I want to prove that Gex is more than just a meme for people online to gawk at. I want all those years of damage against him undone! And nobody is going to stop me!

Getting all 120 stars in Mario 64 - not that impressive in the grand scheme of things, but it’s rare for me to persevere to that level of completion with a video game (especially seeing as I could have considered it ‘beaten’ at 70 stars) so still feels like an achievement for me. Most satisfying though was at uni on Mario Kart 64; one of the guys in my halls in the first year was bragging that his sister had an N64 and he could beat anyone on it as he was that good - I took him up on it and we raced on the Wario Stadium track. I managed the trick of hopping over the barrier (cutting out most of the track) all three laps and sat there laughing at him as he tried to understand what had just happened 😎

A new personal best 🏆 . Once I got that game I promised to myself I’d be the best ever at it. Fast forward: I became a local legend at that game. Dominating any competition; the Crazy Race?
