As an owner of all three modern consoles from launch or launch window, NONE of them have done anything to make me believe that one is that much better than the other of a better choice when it came to hardware, I'm just happy I have options when it comes to games. Even if you think the Xbox is crap, Game Pass Ultimate gives you access to more games than any PS5 alternative. If you hate on the PS5, you still have to admit they have some of the best 3rd party exclusives available amongst consoles.

Let's remember that leaked Phil Spencer e-mail from September of last year, though it was actually from 2021, in which Phil mentioned that he still wanted Microsoft to buy Nintendo and mentioned that it would a "career moment" for him. In that e-mail Phil also mentioned that Nintendo needed to realize that their software can live outside of their hardware, and while I can see the appeal of playing Nintendo games on other consoles and PC, it goes against Nintendo business philosophy, their own games sell hardware, something that Microsoft can't manage to achieve

I think Metroid Prime 4 will be revealed in the next Direct, with a cinematic trailer, but with the launch date of 2025. Most likely Metroid Prime 2 and 3 will launch for the Switch after the presentation, with a physical release 1 month or so later.

Ninja Theory will probably be next. They had a live service game, Bleeding Edge, that Microsoft shut down after only 1 year, and now, Hellblade 2 is coming out 5 years after it was announced and will only be 8 hours long. After NT ports their game to the PS5, I suspect the studio will be closed.

The moment Shinji Mikami left Tango Gameworks way back in 2023 to start something fresh, I feared the worst for the relatively small studio. I'm not that surprised that it hit, unfortunately, both Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks. This doesn't came out of nowhere, yet, it is still surprising that Microsoft hasn't any other option to keep Tango as a small division somehow alive. Let them focus on smaller scale games like Hi-Fi Rush. People are always acting that The Evil Within games were somewhat of a game changer and Hi-Fi Rush sold millions of copies. This was never the case, but Hi-Fi Rush was at least lauded with good reception and it was the first game from Tango I really enjoyed. And that's what I still think, they would have been a good fit for an experimantal studio, without focusing too much on big games.

It's actually the first time I've heard that the founder left the company, so, yeah, if you are serious here, I go with you and say that Ninja Theory is done for and will be merged with other Bethesda/AB divisions during this re-structure. Microsoft is doing the worst to promote Hellblade I unfortunately and since a while now, t seems lke they don't have the biggest fate in Hellblade II anymore, degrading it from one of the biggest titles in recent years (a few years ago) to a, these were Matt Bootys words if I remember correctly, a smaller scale title. Some people speculate for a while now if something is wrong between Microsoft and Ninja Theory, so it isn't too far fetched to think that we will hear some News concrnng Ninja Theory a while after the release of Hellblade II.

To be fair, Disney has had a lot of success by acquiring other studios and comapnies, say what you will about their current state but under their belt Disney released movies like The Avengers and its sequels (Marvel), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Lucasfilm) and Avatar: the way of water (20th Century Fox), all of them were huge hits, Microsoft has never managed to created a huge killer-app in ages for its gaming division

I personally think the decision from Microsoft to close these studios sealed the deal and made me believe its time to go back to 2 consoles, Nintendo and Sony. Microsoft is proving that its still playing the numbers game and now I fear for all the studios it purchased because they market these games as Gamepass day-1 releases, but then judge the studio's viability on number of units sold. Every industry is planning for uneasy times coming up. If you look over the last year, every industry is laying people off and closing divisions. My work has done it twice. Inflation is killing a lot of jobs. It’s not only developers. But when times are hard, games are a luxury and not a need. When it’s harder to afford housing and food, games will suffer.

I'm not surprised that MS is closing studios, they spent $77+B on Activision. These studio closures will likely be tax write-offs, like Bat-girl was for WBD. This is why MS should have been blocked from buying Activision in the first place, these mega buyouts do stifle talent and competition.

So. Bethesda says they're looking into increasing output for their games in the wake of the Fallout show success. Shortly after, MS closes a bunch of Bethesda subsidiaries down. This "shifting of resources " as Matt Booty calls it is MS throwing more money/ people at BGS to get the next Elder Scrolls and Fallout games out sooner rather than later.

Regarding xbox, I have to wonder why they need to reassign these assets to their main IPs. Is there a shortage of talent in the industry? Because if there are plenty of people available for hire, I can't help but wonder why Xbox wouldnt commit to steadily hiring and increasing team sizes in their main IPs if they REALLY want to push the scope of them, while allowing these existing smaller teams to make their smaller creative games. What benefit is there to merging teams outside of 1) Moving perm employees around instead of hiring temp employees who would need to be let go after a project is done and 2) rapidly boosting production by bringing people in who are already experienced and dont have to go through onboarding at a new company?? neither of these things seem majorly beneficial long term, so unless those smaller studios were losing money, or the industry lacks talent to hire, I am confused.

I feel like the industry is in a contraction right now, like the '80s crash. As you said, there are a lot of people who've lost their jobs already, so if Microsoft needed more people to work on the main IPs, they could've hired those people and looked good in the process. But the fact that they're only firing more people while moving others to the main IPs tells me that they're not wanting to expand. And I feel that the layoffs will continue as the year goes on. I mean, after Hellblade 2 comes out, what's next for Ninja Theory? They had a failed live service game, and Hellblade 2 will likely not sell well enough. So, Ninja Theory will probably be closed soon.

I think Phil is already out in terms of making the big decisions. I believe Satya gave Phil a blank check to make Game Pass the Netflix of gaming, and after spending $75 billion on Bethesda and Activision and not moving the needle on Game Pass subs, which have pretty much stagnated, I think Satya is making the decisions now which is why Xbox is going full multiplatform, because that's what Satya wants. And I think the next gen Xbox will be PC hardware at a premium price. I don't expect Microsoft to compete with the PS6. I believe Microsoft is getting out of the closed console hardware space because the investors don't like the Xbox as a closed platform. And all Phil is going to do is try to sell these changes to the Xbox fans.

Consider Obsidian a small bonus, but one wrong move from that studio and they won't hesitate to shut them down.
