Lmao, they didn’t do it out of the goodness of their hearts. Considering how Silent Hill 2 remake looks like a PS2 game and runs like $hit, there is legitimate scope and reason for Valve to release a stronger system. They most likely held back on a new, more powerful iteration simply for cost saving measures and probably found that it isn’t worth it and they may as well just spend the extra time and money to release the “next gen” Steam Deck instead.

Yeah they think upgrading your PC every couple years is pointless, as it takes time for game developers to actually take advantage of the hardware, also they have the statistics to figure out what are the modal popular games and typical system setups.

Not sure if they would have created the OLED model without the feedback they got after the original model🤔. But it was released more or less at the same price and the same spec and was it two years later pretty much? If it was a slightly noticeable performance upgrade I might feel it to be unfair but since it's pretty much the same on that front at least for me i'm just happy that the option exists. Especially since the original model is very well supported. We would be missing most of the updates and improvements the original has gotten if they waited those around 2 years and similar for all the improvements to using steam on linux. At least for me releasing the original when they did far outweighs the differences between the models and since the performance is so similar, the original one is still a valid target for developers, which might not be the case if the performance was higher for the oled model.

I would like to note that Sonic X Shadow Generations features new and updated dialog for the Sonic campaign. Entire sections of the script have been completely rewritten. From what I've seen, it makes the character interactions quite a bit better. Also IGN gave this game a 9 wild times

I think they should wait 3 years before releasing the Stem Deck 2. That would give them 4 years since the OLED refresh and 5 years since the original. It would be just enough time that the leap should be substantial enough that we would be able to play higher quality games on higher settings with better frame rates. It'll also come out around the time the current Steam Deck might start struggling to play newer games above lower settings.

I think yes and no. Although they share the gaming market, it's kinda divided between PC and console gamers. Console players specifically like the consoles for the plug and play experience you get. So I don't think it'll affect them too much. Especially for Xbox because they are already kinda moving to just put their games everywhere they can get them to play meaning if anything they'll be happy about more of the handhelds being sold.

Here’s my design for a Steam Deck 2: The APU would see a massive upgrade to six Zen 5c cores (which are separated into two PMICs; one with four cores, the other with two cores, to save battery life in games that don’t need extra cores) and the CPU performance would be similar to a Ryzen 5 5600X3D. The GPU has twelve RDNA 4 compute units and has a 300% performance boost over the steam deck before considering anything else. The GPU clockspeed is a bit higher (2GHz), and the APU has a chiplet design with a 48mb L3 cache in the chiplet interposer that’s shared between the GPU and CPU. This part of the APU is made in a 3nm process node. The rest of the APU is made in a cheaper process node, and there’s RAM built in, like Lunar Lake (being 32 or 48gb depending on your storage configuration). The storage is available anywhere between 512gb and 4TB. The screen is upgraded to a 1440x900 resolution with a 165hz refresh rate, and is OLED by default. There’s also support for VRR, and HDR, and the screen is the same size as the Deck OLED. The dpad has the issue of double presses fixed, and the triggers and thumbsticks are now hall effect. The motherboard is much smaller, and that space goes to a 80 watt hour battery. The power consumption is similar to the original steam deck, so beefier cooling isn’t needed. The in game GPU performance is comparable to a GTX Titan Xp or RTX 2080 Super. The IO has a second usb c port, and an Oculink port.

Oh, like $700 minimum. Actually, the PS5 has way beefier specs and it is still way cheaper. If this Steam Deck 2 was given time, it would eventually drop in price (maybe $500 or so), and in the mean time there are alternatives out there that would hold you over until this came out

The thing I like about pc gaming are the incremental upgrades. You can play all the games in your library and when newer games start to not perform on your hardware as you’d like you upgrade. Steam isn’t bringing out a new steam deck to be fair to consumers it’s down to money. Just like how Nintendo have dragged out the life of the switch for as long as they can
