Might be worth revisiting this topic in light of Labo, in particular the use of the IR camera in a lot of those cardboard toys and the use of HD rumble as a motor for the remote control car thing. (Also... Every other company could be interesting to look at from this lens, though... I don't think many have made as many dramatic turns)

I'm still amazed the Switch doesn't have a virtual console. It makes sense to include it as part of the Online package, but having a virtual console on a console you can take anywhere would have been a huge sale point. Instead they're forcing people to install emulators to play old games, and they're missing out on the profits.

Great video! Can't believe I'm just now seeing it. The Switch was the first Nintendo console I was stoked about since the Wii and I mainly bought it because I can mainly handhold it which I do. But here's the best part about the Switch. It's multiplayer. Most of my friends own a Switch. No more do we have to try to fit everyone on one TV screen! A basic Switch rig comes with two controllers, which is great if half the people at the party actually own a Switch. Mario Kart is a prime example of how the Switch is the best for multiplayer games. We had one switch on the TV filled up with 4 players, but two more people in on the game in the same room in handheld mode. I feel like TV or handheld, the gaming experience is the same. Which is sick!!

I remember when it was first announced. I was genuinely excited about the leaked basic system settings screenshots. They finally, finally, got feature parity with Windows 95. I am talking about a RTC that understands timezones. Even a keyboard that supports keyboard layouts. Oh, and non sucky wifi. Seriously, Nintendo took more than twenty years to catch up to home computers.

WE can diss on nintendo all day, but we have to remember so many of our modern smartphone and pc features are due in part to the fact that they essentially broke the ground on them. Everything from your vibrator in your phone to the comfort of modern gaming controllers can give a huge thank you to nintendo. Because they ALWAYS innovate, even if not every innovation is good. They innovate for innovation's sake.

The World Ends With You Remix has an interesting "Touch in Toaster Mode" implementation. The game expects the player to do a ton of different touch commands (Drag, Tap, Swipe in multiple directions, scratch, etc). Obviously in handheld mode, this works pretty flawless. In Toaster Mode, you use the joycon like a wiimote. To prevent the usual wiimote sketchiness of "Where the fuck is my cursor?!", the game allows to instantly reset the cursor to the center, somewhat easing out the problem.

SNES hardware expansion through cartridges is pretty weird. Though you have to remember that what you see time and time again is that standalone hardware 'upgrades' for consoles tend to be failures. Everything from the Sega CD, to the N64's memory expansion (or worse the 64DD) tend to really struggle. This is also a factor in why the motion controllers on the Wii are the default controller, and not some optional extra. So where does this leave the SNES? Well, the trick here is that even though it's a more expensive way of doing things, by silently sticking the upgrade in the cartridge, you can more or less hide it's existence. To people buying them it's just a game like any other... ... Even though it would have been more efficient for everyone if, say, the SuperFX was a standalone upgrade that then had games that plugged into the upgrade unit... Also worth remembering that some of these upgrades, as far as can be established historically were not originally standalone devices. In particular, have you ever wondered, why pilotwings - which is a launch title, remember, ALREADY had an upgrade chip in it? Surely the point of an external upgrade is to beef up a system's capabilities later in life? The SA-1 and SuperFX meet this criteria, being 4-5 years into the system's lifespan... (The SA-1 essentially being a faster version of the system's standard CPU with some special support functions added for good measure. - if they could have afforded it no doubt they would have given the SNES a faster CPU from the start, but what was affordable in 1995 is different to what was affordable in 1990) So that brings us back around to Pilotwings. And that DSP-1 chip it contains. I haven't properly done the research to verify this, but there are rumours going around that the reason this happened is because the DSP-1 was originally an internal component of the system. The DSP-1 is a relatively fast (compared to the main CPU) chip with a lot of special purpose 3d graphics functionality with a focus on stuff that's useful to a flight simulator. However, it also just has much better multiply and divide capabilities than the base hardware, which is useful for games in general. If this had been a standard part of the design, it's reasonable to expect there'd be a lot more, and likely more elaborate pseudo-3d games on the system. As it stands, it would suggest they were making pilotwings with the idea that this would be part of the base system, only to decide last minute to not include it, forcing them to add it to the game instead. That could be entirely incorrect, but it would otherwise imply that right from launch they felt putting upgrades in cartridges should be a standard occurrence...

To be honest, most Switch games don't feel special on the Switch. You could port them to other consoles, & there'd be no difference. Nintendo never focuses on graphics, which is fine since they focus on giving a unique console experience. However, barely any devs take full advantage of the Switch. As a result, it just feels like a crappy underpowered gaming tablet, except most games don't support the touch screen. Plus, the Switch lacks some personality, compared to something like the DSi. Sure, many DS games could be perfectly ported to other consoles. However, the system UI, sounds, & apps made it feel like a cool little device to mess with. The DSi Shop had a nice Bossa Nova theme. Flipnote Studio had a funny frog incorporated into the UI, & it allowed you to share animations online. Yes, smartphones overpower the DSi in countless ways, nowadays, but what phones lack is personality. They feel more utilitarian, & so does the Switch. Well, there are some cute little features here & there, but it just doesn't compare. Some people like that the Switch is more simplified. No gimmicks, people just want a machine to play games on. Fare enough but why not purchase an Xbox, PS5, or even Steam Deck? Other than some benefits like playing LAN games on the go & exclusives, the Switch offers nothing else unique. Even then, most of the exclusives don't take full advantage of the Switch's hardware, either. The console has a good foundation, but barely anything is done with it. Few games try something new & only a few. I understand most games don't have a reason to experiment with the Switch's special hardware, but it still feels like it's on the brink of just being another console. The Switch tries to be special but also tries to blend with the crowd. It's so old at this point, though, that things're probably too late. Maybe next time.
