My kids gave me a Switch this year. Otherwise I was skipping it. I already have Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Zelda and more. If I owned Nintendo stock, Wii U would have angered me. As a guy that just want to game? Terrific fun, affordable system.

To me the Wii U suffered from how it was trying SOO hard to piggyback on the Wii's success by using the brand name that it was difficult to tell if it was meant to be a full blown successor or a spin-off console, control device whose way of usage felt too gimmicky, kinda hard to understand in regards to the control pad and not as fun, exciting and revolutionary like the Wii motion controls and finally failing to appeal to the hardcore gaming crowd by using the Wii brand name along with feeling like a mildly inferior version of PS3 and Xbox 360, especially since the PS4 and Xbox One was being released a year later which made the Wii U's limited graphic hardware that much more blatant and thus caused many games that was supposed to be released for it to be canceled. The Nintendo Switch meanwhile far succeeded because it had a concept far easier to understand and an extremely revolutionizing idea that would influence future portable consoles like the Steam Deck and whose graphical capabilities and the console design managed to get many third party developers on board in making ports and versions for the console, one that caused many hardcore gamers to get fully invested in the Switch and thus resulted in it as of now being the highest sold console in gaming history.

Personally, I loved my Wii U, and got TONS of value from it. Nintendoland with friends was loads of fun, and both Windwaker HD, BotW and Mario Kart 8 worked well at launch. I never owned a Wii, tho, so I guess that's why it was great value for me personally, getting to play loads of previous titles.
