Zant is not a good trickster, and the Shadow Beasts are not communicative at all, the only thing they would do to him is turning him into a shadow Beast, like what they've done to an old woman at Kakariko. It's clear that this is a Demon, just like the horned statue, that makes profite out of Hylian's greed.

So, he sold it to a boss poe, who then split apart into 56 of imp poes and 4 poe-poes to increase the odds of at least retaining SOME of it if something started hunting it (arguably the TP poes are the strongest as you need to be a tough animal to harm them at all, while random shop keepers buying poe souls in other games implies that they could go and hunt the poes themselves/hire others to do it besides just Link. So, TP poes are evolved?)

The calculations ignore all of the gold Jovani got in direct exchange, all of the circumstances surrounding the poes, the fact that only animals can see them in the first place, and the foundation of the theory is even based on the pure guesswork of a poe soul in the game. It doesn't even take into account that a human soul--even if it were made up of a bunch of other souls--would be worth more than its components.

Inflation is not well defined if you consider that in all cases you have a single customer in this games. There is no market. Additionally, you need to consider that demand is also important. For the OoT guy this souls are nice, but for this guy they are worth his life, and he still only gave you 200 XD. But nice video, was interesting to approach it with the limitations of this games!

The concept you described in the video isn't "inflation". It's "supply and demand". Inflation refers to the change in "buying power" of a currency. The two concepts relate when you apply supply and demand to the currency itself, but the relationship is complicated and not applicable here.

One thing that should be remembered is that people often don't realize that value of something until it is taken away from them, or if it is scarce. Value is subjective depending on the customer, the merchant, and the circumstances. For example, if society were to collapse, food and energy sources for machines would most likely be considered more valuable than gold. People like Jovani and the Poe collector might assume that a soul has a finite value because every person has one, making it a common thing, but they would be wrong because it's what makes us who we are. No amount of wealth, knowledge, or power is worth the unexplainable source of consciousness and emotions we all have.

I think so too. Greed, specifically hatred, devalues it considerably. Since the Goddesses have made a vast VAST world, and said world has an infinite number of parallel worlds, so there's an infinite variation of the same soul, and yet in spite of sheer numbers, the lesser gods themselves intervene on behalf of mortals. This indicates each and every soul is unique and of incalculable value, regardless. The number of souls in existence, living or deceased seem to be irrelevant to them. So the video simply shows us this: A demon would give you a mountain of treasure for your soul. A god wouldn't dare put a price tag on your soul. A Poe, being a lost soul full of hatred towards the world and life, has reduced itself to being only worth a fraction, 1/60th of an uncorrupted soul. There doesn't seem to be any taboo from the gods to purchase or sell Poes on the black market either.

There is also the additional point that, as time passes, as gold is a valuable and useful material, due to its nonreactive properties, even having large quantities of it doesn't lower its value by much, as show in the past by gold standard currencies, the value of gold is pretty constant, meaning that it backs up other currencies such as rupees, quite nicely.

I feel there is something you overlooked though. There are only 60 poes in twilight princess. In OoT poes we're everywhere and in Majoras Mask they are only found in one place. As such poes are worth even more than either of those games because there is an extremely finite amount. As such they are compatible to the inflationon of coal or oil.

Ocarina of Time and Majoras Mask use the same Link, but Majoras Mask is just a few later. This means that there was a lot of inflation. Meaning you want to use Majoras Mask.

I would think that the cost of his soul would require multiplying by 100 rather than 60 since you need 100 poe souls to fully restore him to his old self. That alone would take the value from 3000 to 5000 rupees. 5000 is of course a lot of rupees, but I think the soul is still worth more than that. Remember that all of the poe souls you collect are pieces of his soul and so they didn't exist before the deal was made. It's literally impossible to find any other poe souls in the world of Twilight Princess. Twilight Princess also takes place after Ocarina of Time and the poes in Ocarina of Time were so common as a result of Ganon's influence on the world. I would say that at a minimum the poe souls in TP would be equal to 200 rupees. You mentioned that in Ocarina of Time there are only 10 big poes and that there are only 2 in Majora's Mask, but it's not unreasonable to think that Link isn't the only person who has ever collected and sold a poe soul of any kind before. The people who buy the souls from you already have an idea of how much these souls should cost. They're rare, but they're not unheard of. Also considering that a big poe soul in Majora's Mask is equal in price to a small sample of gold dust it gives you an idea of how much stock their is in relation to demand. We'll assume that demand is pretty low for something like a soul because most people would have no use for it, but if somebody is willing to buy it, especially somebody like the curiosity shop owner in Majora's Mask's clock town, that's evidence of a reasonable demand for them. We can't accurately quantify the demand for poe souls, but we can confirm that they are far more expensive than what you suggested in this video. The absolute minimum I would say a Hylian soul is worth is 20,000 rupees. That's based on a price of 200 rupees per soul compared to 100 souls.

Some additions. You mentioned inflation, but not the inflation of the money (rupees) itself. I can't be sure, but I do think that the general cost between OoT and TP is different, and to be sure with a checking of inflation rate we would have to find something of comparable value between them, to figure out if the worth of rupees has changed. We are doing this in rupees, or a nebulous value, like 500 sandwiches or something. Next, I think we maybe need some understanding of up selling and under selling. No merchant worth his salt buys something at its cost, and sells it at the same. So Link will not be selling Poe souls at their full value, regardless of inflation from scarcity, unless the Poe soul had desperately required purpose, which depends on their elasticity, which itself is if the product has a lot of altenrnatives, and what could be gained from it. Such as petrol having few alternatives to drive your car, and being important to get around, can make the value of fuel vary greatly. There are too few known values, like what Poe souls are used for, and what an entity gained from buying a Hylian's soul and making them Poe. We end up having to go into speculation, alone if there is a difference of value between a fully formed Poe, and one reduced to a soul. Are they used in the creation of really strong magic? Could a fully formed Poe draw more magic in than the soul of one? Unfortunately, the Legend of Zelda is filled with these not full pictures, we don't even know if he was ripped off in selling his soul.

I know I'm a bit late to the party, but 4:05 , diamonds aren't expensive because they're rare. Diamonds are actually common as all heck. Diamonds are expensive because only a few companies control the means of distribution. They want to make money so they created a market where diamonds are highly sought after and have to be personalized in jewelry to have worth. I know you touched on it like immediately after, but the script was still titchy. They were common way before Kimberley, and they're saturated in our daily lives. People just don't (almost can't resell. If you tried to resell your diamond jewelry, you wouldn't get very much for it at all because diamonds are indeed common and not worth very much.

I have another way to calculate this. So. Breath of the Wild. We have the demon statue outside Hateno. It will buy essence from Link for 120 rupees. This equates to 1 heart of health and 1/5 of a stamina wheel. By default, Link has 3 hearts and a full wheel. That's 8 essences worth of stuff. 8*120=960 rupees for Link's soul at his weakest. Now. Maximum worth of Link in BotW. 3 Stamina Wheels and 28 hearts if you have Champion's Ballad (I know you can go up to 30 hearts this was how I did it). 3*5 is 15, +28 is 43 essences total. Way more than the measly 8 he starts with. After completing all of the trials, Link's soul is more than 5 times its original strength... and worth. 43*120 is 5160 rupees for Link's soul. I could go even further, determining the worth of every other entity in Greater Hyrule. It involves a lot of math. If anyone is interested in that math, speak up, and I'd be glad to do it.

Diamonds were a pretty bad example, diamonds should technically be worth nothing due to the fact they're so easy to make. The reason they cost a lot is due to the agreement between companies that sell them to keep their prices high, a diamond with a colour imperfection would be worth much more depending on what element causes it and some other factors like how easily you can see through them and such

One more thing you forgot time also affects inflation a poe soul would be a different value from Ocarina of Time to Twilight Princess and since they're based three to four hundred years after you would multiply the value of the poe soul by 3 or 4

You missed a detail about the gold, those are not gold bars or gold dust but gold coins. They are stamped with the mark of the royal family therefore at some point they were issued out or at least controlled by the royal treasury. Just like how in the USA the actual gold of the country is held in Fort Knox. What this most likely means is that gold is actually the standard, or at least it was at one point, and rupees have no value of their own just what the kingdom says their value is like paper money in todays economy. Given that he has them odds are either the Poes stole them from the treasury or it was a lost treasure. Either way when he tries to sell them then he is in for a world of trouble. A true case of being careful what you wish for because even after the curse is broken it can still do him harm but the poes did fulfill their part of the bargain.

Majoras mask takes place in Termina, so maybe they are valued there more, so I would say use Ocarina of Time, also, I wonder if a cats soul is worth more with how much money Gengal will give you, lol.

How long is this game anyways? I remember watching my dad play it but he never quite finished it due to being too long. The last part I remember seeing him being at was when you were turned back into the dog but this time Midna was sickly and that was also the first time he met this character who needed Poe's souls. He stopped playing shortly after meeting this character. How much longer is the game from there? (Wii version btw, in case that makes a difference) Later I tried playing this game myself but I didn't even get as far as my dad did before I got stuck and couldn't figure out how to move on. Not that I haven't been stuck previously in which I was able to eventually continue after looking up a walkthrough/playthrough online, but this time I got really stuck to the point that either I couldn't find a walkthrough for it, or I couldn't physically do what I was supposed to, I don't quite remember the exact case as it was some years ago and its been that long since I've had anything to do with that game, at least until now by watching this video.

I'm not a math person, but the math and logic used here is abysmal. If you're accounting for inflation, you should use the Majora's Mask base price of 50, not because it occurs in both OoT and MM (because they're for different items), but because it shows us a rate of inflation. Within Link's life it increased by 500%. Taking this, we can assume that over a century, inflation would indeed increase by at least 500%, seeing that poes are now limited. After Link's escapades in Hyrule, we can also assume there are far fewer poes, 100 left for TP. With this, the inflation should be between 500% and 2500%. We sadly can't get a "true" number here because of the nature of Poes in OoT and MM, but this video's estimate was the lowest possible and reached the conclusion using faulty logic.
