I think at the end of the day people need to realize that any mainline entry into one of Nintendo's flagship IPs is going to be full-price. Indies like Hollow-Knight are indies, there isn't a precedent for indies to carry AAA price tags.
@laggalot10123 жыл бұрын
@A B It's exactly that. Indies more often than not HAVE to underprice their product, because most people are not easily inclined to put down a lot of money for a game from an unproven developer (or alternatively without the backing of a trusted publisher, such as Nintendo), even if it gets praised into the skies. Heck, there's a lot of phenomenal indie games out there that go for 30 or even 20, if not less, and *still* struggle to gain traction. As an example, both Bug Fables and CrossCode are indie games I picked up fairly recently, that have been on my radar for a while and that I was originally uncertain about purchasing at full price, despite really not being that expensive and I found I enjoyed both games greatly once I finally moved to make the purchase. I think they're both worth way more than their asking price, but you can't really know that until you've played it. Now, if either of these games got a sequel that I thought looked promising, my willingness to pay for them would be considerably higher than with the first games. And I assume that's how it goes for a lot of people...

Also you can sell a Mario game for $60 but an indie game would be a lot harder to sell well for $60.

@A B I dont know about that. The indi market isnt old enough yet. You can totally go and say 'Game xx was worth more than what i paid' after you played it. And i think thats true for games like hollow knight. And yet most people wouldnt go and do that before they can play it. Thats the nature of the games market. Are there even indi games that are like 3 iterations in? I feel like thats the least amount of examples you need to get some kind of brand recognition and trust of quality. And then you often have to have knowledge to recognize its creator. Its not immediatly obvious that Deltarune will be made by the Undertale guy, if you dont follow Toby Fox. Now Darkest Dungeon will keep its name with the second one ( I think.. ), but its only the second, which will need to prove if it was a one hit wonder or not.

Like every genre is oversaturated there are so many open world games, souls-likes, fps shooters, narrative driven games etc. platformers are not any less worth it than any other genre of game, lots of work goes into any game and just because it doesn’t have super ultra realistic graphics doesn’t make platformers any less worse. Like for example; Ori And The Blind Forest, Ori And The Will Of The Wisps, Hollow Knight, Shantae And The Pirates Curse, Shantae Half Genie Hero, Shantae And The Seven Sirens, Yooka-Laylee And The Impossible Lair, Donkey Kong Contry Returns, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Rayman Origins or Rayman Legends etc. are any of those phenomenal games I just listed over valued or do those games and their immaculate quality not mean anything? Gameboy remake? 60. Remaster from wii? 60. Three emulated games? 60. Not to mention the borderline agregious price of any proprietary nintendo hardware accessories. 80 bucks for a pair of joycons. The things barely work. I paid 60 for metroid dread because in all likelihood it will be a good game. Do I think it was worth it though? Idk. @lenarmangum64013 жыл бұрын
Michael Teter The thing you fail to understand those indie developers and games have to be priced lower because of steep competition within the indie scene, dispute their quality. They have to be priced competitively within that scene because there are so many games of that type in the indie space, besides Nintendo can charge that much for their games because the have a long history of quality titles and well established ip’s. Plus when developing a game like Kirby Star Allies or Yoshi’s Crafted World or Metroid Dread or whatever have you. Hundreds of developers/employees work on this games and there’s a lot that goes into marketing and stuff which is part of the huge price increase. You gotta pay all those developers somehow plus indie developers don’t have the same resources that a big company like Nintendo does. Nintendo doesn’t have to compete with indies they only have to compete with themselves, because what other company’s are making platforms regularly either 2D or 3D? Also in the case of charging for ports of already released games I don’t agree with that practice but I’m purely talking about new games/software not joy-cons or any other hardware.

I think the guys right off the bat here are mischaracterizing the core argument against metroid dread. Sure it's silly to say all 2D games shouldn't be worth $60 BUT this whole conversation started with metroid dread, and if you compare it to ITS OWN COMPETITION - ie. the metroidvania genre, then you have to look at the market. The market for metroidvania games has squarely priced the genre lower than 60. And it's not JUST because they're indies. Alex's point that "oh 2D games used to cost this much" is honestly moot because we're talking about the CURRENT paradigm Hollow knight is a longer game than dread will be (almost definitely) - $15 Ori and the will of the wisps is a more graphically impressive game - $30 Bloodstained is the other half of the genres namespake (castlevania sotn creators new game) - $40 If you're a fan of this genre but one of the MANY people who've never played metroid, what are nintendo doing to stay competitive? Remember most fans of this type of game have hollow knight as the benchmark. You're now putting consumers in the position where they're paying 4x the price of hollow knight for a shorter game, 2x the price of ori for an uglier game and 33% more the price bloodstained for a game with less systems and variety. Obviously as a metroid fan i know that dread will likely have map design that is a tier above these games but the problem is I AM A METROID FAN. normal players don't know this, and if the game gets 8/10s averaged then those people might go elsewhere. I want metroid to succeed but i can't blame non fanboys for not wanting to pay $60 here because it's a game in a genre DOMINATED by cheaper games that are also masterpieces. I'm worried that metroid 5 might be the last metroid game if nintendo can't convince new people to buy into this franchise and pricing according to the current market standards is absolutely a good way to do that - and i think $60 foir a metroidvania in 2021 will push away people

@@phili58 "The price the market has settled on" I think it's too early to say that. Ori is only 6 years old, and Hollow Knight is only 4 years old. How many other landmark games have come out in the genre recently? Axiom Verge comes to mind, and I think it's a similar price point to Ori, but Metroid and Castlevania together still make up more than half of the entries in the genre that are worth playing, and they were all released as full price games on their respective systems (if I'm wrong about this, feel free to correct me; don't feel like going through all of their release prices). This current price point is a trend precipitated by AAA studios general unwillingness to make Metroidvanias, and the subsequent taking of the mantle by Indie studios. Dread could easily sell very well at this price point and encourage other AAA studios to take a shot at the genre, in which case people would become used to a AAA price. It's also worth noting that Metroidvania fans aren't exactly being oversupplied with games. We're still talking about Hollow Knight and Ori as the best *recent* Metroidvanias. And in a genre that focuses on tight, 10 hour experiences rather than 40 hour epics, there's plenty of room for more games. Fans of HK and Ori may be starved enough that they're willing to shell out for a more expensive but similar game that has the Nintendo seal of approval.

Makes me sad that people would suggest lowering the price of the first new mainline Metroid game in 19 years. Graphical style has never been a determiner of game quality or value. Metroid is already a bit of a risk for Nintendo because it doesn’t sell as well as Mario and Zelda, so what would it tell them if everyone complained that a major title in the Metroid franchise was too expensive at the same price as a major Mario or Zelda game? I have never played a Metroid game before, but I’m almost finished Metroid Prime and Hollow Knight, and seriously, this genre has such a great potential for dense gameplay. I personally value games based on replay-ability, because better games are gonna be more replay-able, even if they only go for 5-10 hours. Metroid Dread will be perfect for people who like replaying games, and it is definitely worth the $60 being charged.
@pivotguydc11493 жыл бұрын
They explained my argument perfectly in the first few minutes. A 10-hour game that is so tightly paced and designed it makes you want to replay it 8 times is worth more than a 60-hour game that you can only endure once.

And Metroid games are almost always the former. Sequence breaks, speedruns, 100% completion...they're designed with replays in mind. Even 1994's Super Metroid holds up this well.

My value for each 2d game on Switch: Metroid Dread: $60 Mario Maker 2: $60 Smash Ultimate: $60 Link's Awakening: $40 (-$20 for remake, would be $60 if it was a new 2d Zelda) Yoshi's Crafted World: $40 (-$20 for basic left-to-right level-by-level format instead of having more unique pathing and progression. I still love this game though) Kirby Star Allies: $30 (-$20 for having basic left-to-right level-by-level format. -$10 for being so short. Once again, still love this game) DKC Tropical Freeze: $30 (-$20 for being a Wii U port, -$10 for having basic left-to-right level-by-level format) Kirby Return to Dreamland Deluxe: $30 (-$20 for remake, -$10 for having basic left-to-right level-by-level format) I feel like the super simple format of just "getting to the end" to unlock the next level and then just going left to right to get to the end in that level is a really basic form of game design that so many 2d games use, and has a lot less nuance than the progression in a lot of 3d games. However, games LIKE Metroid Dread prove that you can make 2d games with that same level of nuance, you just have to have a more unique design philosophy. I'm not saying all 2d platformers have to be Metroidvanias, but being a Metroidvania isn't the ONLY way to make a 2d platformer have more interesting progression (ex. Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, Mario Maker 2)

One point worth noting: when the Switch launched, it was really hard to find. When I got mine, I bought it about a week after launch because that was the soonest I found one available, and I had to buy it as a bundle with BotW and 1-2-Switch. I'm sure lots of people bought the game separately, but I'm also sure there are others like me who just wanted a Switch, probably wouldn't have bought 1-2-Switch separately for $60 but got it anyway because for a while after launch, bundles were the only Switches you could find because Switches were being scalped or bought by people who were faster hitting the check out button. The end result is the same, people did actually buy the game, but that doesn't mean everyone who bought it actually wanted it so I think the numbers are a bit inflated in that sense, compared to Xenoblade or the others you mentioned. Games that are bundled always sell well, look at Tetris or other games that were bundled with their original systems.

The way I see it, Metroid has a double disadvantage compared to other Nintendo games. One (and arguably most important), it has lots of competition - there's plenty of great 2D/Metroidvania games out there at a way lower price. Two, Metroid isn't really one of Nintendo's big names. It has a loyal fanbase, of course, but I feel that a 60$ price tag isn't going to do much to lure new fans in - especially, again, considering how many other similar games are available for lower prices. For me personally and for Metroid in particular, 60$ is a dealbreaker. I'm not really a sci-fi person; I look for something striking in 2D games (especially Metroidvanias) since they tend to feel samey after a while, and I'm not seeing much in Metroid Dread; last but not least, I already have both Ori games, Hollow Knight and Dead Cells to scratch that 2D itch. Right now, Metroid just isn't measuring up to the competition for me - and that price tag won't help any time soon, especially considering that indeed, Nintendo games rarely drop in price (and when they do the drops are negligible). Thanks for reading my wall of text, hope you have a great day :)
@nanowasabi44213 жыл бұрын
There are good Metroidvanias, certainly, but I wouldn't say there are plenty. The number of truly notable Metroidvanias that aren't Metroid or Castlevania could be lower than 10, depending on who you ask. If you've played Ori 1 and 2, Hollow Knight, and Axiom Verge (haven't played Dead Cells, is it good as a Metroidvania?) then you're already starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel as far as I'm concerned. (And if you know of any games that can truly compare to these, please for the love of God tell me about them :) )

Some extra ranting: Just to try and be scientific about this, the value a person gets out of a game is in (time spent having fun), but also in (valued memories) and in (intense feelings) and (revelations). Ooh, and the ability to have fun together with friends, or even make new friends. There's so many things games do for us, so if we're going to argue about the individual monetary value of games... which may be beside the point, but if we are... then there's a lot more in the formula than just hours of playtime. That said, out of all of those, the total playtime is the only economic argument, because you need a new game when you're done with all your other games. Games that keep you busy for longer are better for your wallet, in that sense. Depends if you're someone who only buys what they play, or who just collects at a steady rate regardless.

I will absolutely buy a game I think/know I’ll enjoy. Link’s Awakening 2019 and NSMBU Deluxe are games I will never regret paying $60 for because I had a lot of fun with them, and I also won’t regret buying the Metroid Dread special edition (if I can find it) because the series deserves so much more love than it gets, and I’m confident I’ll enjoy the game (but also that art book looks super sick). In my opinion, any great game that obviously has a lot of care, love, and hard work put into it is easily worth that price, no matter the genre, even if it doesn’t interest me personally. Hollow Knight is a game I would’ve bought without question even if it was $40-60. It’s a gorgeous game with tight gameplay and amazing hand-drawn animation. The amount of work put into it is incredibly apparent, and I’m hoping I can give them a little more than $15 for Silksong because they totally deserve it. Indie games are generally priced lower because indie devs may not need as much money to as AAA devs to sustain their business, but that doesn’t necessarily make a well-made, thoughtful AAA game overpriced. I also agree that if a port with minimal upgrades is priced higher than the original release, that’s less okay. Like, Tropical Freeze could’ve been a $60 game on the WiiU and it would’ve made total sense, but if they’ve shown they’re willing to accept $50 for the game, why is it priced higher on Switch? To me, that’s the main difference between the prices of TF Switch and LA2019, even though they’re the same price. I mean, TF is well worth the $60 price tag, but the main problem is the price hike upon rerelease. If there’s a game you really want to play or a game you’ll immensely enjoy, you’ll probably fork out that money in a heartbeat. If you don’t think X game is worth Y dollars, then maybe you weren’t going to enjoy it much anyway, and you could save that money for a game you’ll enjoy more. Anyway, to whoever might be reading this, have a great day :)
