The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening 5. Shantae and The Seven Sirens P.S: I was torn between Half Genie Hero and Seven Sirens but Seven Sirens to me takes the cake because of the interconnected world system, story, Metroidvania-Style gameplay and God-that Final Boss-I’m not going to ruin it for people who haven’t played it yet but OMG what a Final Battle-stellar indeed! Extra Credit: Yoshi’s Crafted World is an Honorable Mention I’d like to include in here; even though it didn’t ALMOST make my top 5.

Mine would be 1. Super Smash Bros Ultimate 2. Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 3. Super Mario Odyssey 4. Undertale 5. Luigi's Mansion 3 Yeah I know I put the all three of the obvious "Big Three" Switch games but I put all three of them because they are just too dang good. Super Smash Bros Ultimate is probably the best fighting game of all time with insanely fun gameplay, amazing fighting game balance, and an extremely hype character roster making it feel like a celebration of gaming history. Breath of the Wild is probably the best game ever made, the game makes the open world feel free and alive which is a problem that like 90% of open world games have, and it nails it flawlessly, the game is truly a masterpiece and it's hard to see how anything will top it. And Mario Odyssey is true 3D platforming genius, the game wants you to explore all that it has and makes that very clear by removing the lives system to relieve stress of dying in you adventures and by making Mario control so smoothly and have great enhanced movement options, this feels like what 3D Mario is supposed to be and I love it. I put Undertale because I simply just love the game and all that it is. It kinda teaches you to unplay RPG's in that it encourages finding a non-violent solution to every fight and that's really cool. also the game has a lot of heart and a great sense of humor. It's unfortunate, however, that I have to bring up that I am in no way a part of the really weird fanbase of people that surrounds this game, not saying that all of them are bad in fact sometimes it's a compliment to be called weird, but some really take it to far with their love for the game and that has lead to the mention of the game or anyone who enjoys it being followed by cringes and laughter. Luigi's Mansion 3 is just a great time through and through. When I played it for the first time I played like a floor or two per session and that led to me really enjoying the time I spent with it. If you sit down and just play through as much as you can per session than this game will get really boring and repetitive quick, but if you play it in short bursts like I did it's really quite enjoyable and feels like a true accomplishment to finish. I love the unique theming that they put into each and every floor(even if some of them admittedly don't make sense to be in a hotel), and the visuals and style of the game are incredible to look at. But apart from all of this, the charm of the game really steals the show. Luigi himself is so funny and lovable at every interaction he makes and I love the strong character that he has, that even though he's scared of the situation he's in, he braves it out to save his friends which is really admirable.

One of the things I love about ARMS, is that it takes a game style (which is from an existing series that I love) and adds its own twist to it. I heard the line, "There isn't another game quite like it". My answer, except one. Virtual On. And yes, this is also why I join Alex in how I started playing it with Motion Controls (since the Pre-launch Switch Preview Tour) and to this day, I never switched off them. If you ever played a Virtual On game in the arcades or on a Sega system, with the original Twin Stick controls (Yes, I still have my Dreamcast (2 of them, and a LAN connection cable), Virtual On Oratorium Tangram (2 copies), and the actual Twin Stick controllers). The motion control layout, and the way you use them, is as close any other game has ever come to Virtual On. Outside of obvious differences, when it comes to the "weapon systems", ARMS kind of simplifies some of the more advanced movement features from VOOT. That while, it does remove some of those interesting VOOT advanced player controller techniques like Swimming, or non-symmetric single stick wiggle+fire techs; it definitely opens more of an audience to utilizing better movement options in ARMS. However, that doesn't mean it doesn't add techniques of its own. I love how it adds the extra aspect of After-activation Aiming like how you can add directional english to your punches while traveling. That's a technique that did not exist in VOOT.

And oh. About Breath of the Wild, I had the same realization the moment I left the plateau as was mentioned around the 19 minute mark, and is something I always mention in terms of the significance BOTW did for Open World games. It's something so profound but many people (including devs that want to imitate it) don't realize why it takes the crown for achievement in an open world game. It accomplishes the very promise open world games wanted from the get go, but almost always fail at it. It's the reason why they throw a bunch of quest markers and other arrows and such at you. Once you step off that plateau, if you were to wonder what is the right direction to go, in order to make progress in the game? All of them, is the answer. There is not one way you can go and not progress in some fashion. You can turn off that HUD, not have to worry about any guidance other than seeing that far-off thing moving around and piquing your curiosity. Just wander how you feel like it, deal with whatever comes along, you are doing the right thing and are making worthwhile progression. You'll still be delighted by surprise and challenge, whether to your mind, reflexes, or both. It literally encompasses the feeling, Miyamoto mentioned, that inspired him to create the Zelda games, in the first place. The no wrong answers approach and yet still have a well-defined end goal, is something that is so uniquely Breath of the Wild. How it visually amazes you is that it somehow manages to allow you to see so far, with this insane (at least simulated) draw distance, and still manages to hide so many cool things from you, until you get there. It always answers the question, how do you hide stuff when you allow the player to see everything. Breath of the Wild does it. It makes you feel the freedom of being able to see more than you're used to seeing, and yet somehow hide surprises everywhere. I think some of the magic is that many surprises are right around stuff that looks like a normal continuation of everything you are seeing at a distance, but you need to be close to see that something is just a little *off*, and it is there where they can hide entire adventures in. Entire discoveries, and even whole locations and events. It's crazy. Koroks, the temples, certain entire topographical passages, they all play into that hide in plain sight theme. it's like discovering that final test in Indiana Jones, and the Last Crusade, every time, and in different ways.

I think you guys got to the heart of what makes BOTW one of the best open-world games. As Jon mentioned, the lack of waypoints leading you along every second of the game (like in pretty much every other open-world game) and the fact that every ability is available to you from the start combined with a rich, interactive world you can endlessly explore is what makes the game magical to me. I'll never understand the complaints from people who say the world is "empty" or that the story is bad... I always think "Did we play the same game?" It's not just my favorite Zelda game or my favorite open-world game, BOTW became my favorite video game of all time. And look, I'm in my forties. I've been playing video games since the Atari came out, and BOTW still changed everything for me. It made me feel like a kid again, it changed my expectations of what video games should be. Really looking forward to seeing what they can do with the sequel.

Unfortunately I always get motion sickness with these 3D open world games like Zelda BOTW. So unfortunately, I always miss out. So I’m really glad there’s been a good number of 2D quality games on the Switch like Hollow Knight, Cuphead, Shovel Knight, Celeste, Sonic Mania, Mario Maker 2 etc.
@Auron7103 жыл бұрын
(unpopular opinion) Well if it makes you feel better, I personally find open world games to be unfinished and sparse, and feel more like a tech demo / sandbox than a real game. Its like "here's a bunch of things you can do! lets hope you forget we didn't really put a game in here we just made somewhere for you to walk around and 99% of the content is filler". I played MGS5 and BOTW for about 15 hours each before I was bored, and for the record, I love wind waker, oot, majoras mask, link between worlds / to the past.... I also love MGS1-4. Just cannot deal with open worlds they bore me. so maybe ur like me and in that case, u are not missing out at all! ;p

You can try games that allow u to make your field of view (FOV) wide. Many games on PC will allow this. FWIW, I can't stand Zelda BotW. I found it boring & the world felt empty, whereas I love Immortal Fenyx. I detest the feeling of not knowing where I'm going in a game, but apparently some people love wandering aimlessly & call it "exploration." So, to each their own

In breath of the wild when you first meet Prince Sidon (after being directed there by other NPCs), he tells you to follow the river and you meet him several times along the way. That really captures the way finding in this game. Using visual landmarks and little cues, you can find your way around the world. I remember my first 15 minutes playing the game and thinking "if the rest of the game is as good as this it's going to be perfect" and it is. There is no point where it forces you into a different gameplay system to break things up, it's pure good gameplay. This something I always admired about Shadow of the Colossus too, and something that aggravated me about Assassins Creed.

My top 5 favorite Switch games are. 1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I have not actually beaten the game. I am slowly working on 100% it. It is one of two games I play whenever I feel like playing my Switch but have no other games in mind. 2. Spyro Reignited Trilogy. This is the other game I play all the time. I have played though these games so many times since getting the collection. And I almost got a PS4 instead of the Switch because of this collection. I am very happy that I chose to wait and hope it came to Switch, because the Switch is so much more my kind of game system 3. Okami HD. I know Okami is on pretty much every other system anymore. And I have it on every system I own that it is on. But it is one of my favorite games of all time. It is just such a good game. 4. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. I got this game for Christmas. And I have not at the time I am writing this finished it. But I am really enjoying it. And I know it it be one of my favorites by the time I am done with it. 5. Digimon Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition. I am a huge Digimon fan, and having not one but two great Digimon games in a single collection on a not buggy handheld system is amazing, and makes me so happy. (Had the first one on the Vita, and it struggled.) Hopefully more Digimon games will make there way to the Switch in the future.

Two key points: 1. Interesting how no-one chose Pokemon Sword and Shield 2. Loving the digital foundry style combined videos. Works very well

Alex, it would be great if you gave a advanced-level tutorial on playing ARMS with the waggle controls, and what you find the best waggle button layout. I’d also love to watch you guys debate between waggle and pro controls, though I suppose that’s a bit niche. Do it for ARMS!

I really like those Top 5 videos and really hope we get more of that "podcast" vids with you three. Some more games I still missed and really enjoyed on the Switch: Mario + Rabbids: great and fun crossover and the fighting style feels awesome Crypt of the Necrodancer: best 4€ I've spent on the Switch, the soundtrack is just unbelievable! Ultimate Chicken Horse: our go to jump and run game, it's just an absolute blast if it gets going

I loved Hollow Knight as well. It is such a magical game that I regretfully have not completed. I was so close to surviving the Gauntlet challenge and then I stopped playing bc rage, ha! I want to go back to it but I’m afraid of relearning the controls and timing. This is a similar reason for not having purchased Cuphead yet. Oh the fear....and the back log.

I died twice and lost all my money. I was so pissed off that I never played it again. I feel that taking your stuff away is a cheap game mechanic to raise the difficulty level. There has got to be another way to make a game challenging...
@traceries52013 жыл бұрын
demonbre I can see that being frustrating if you aren’t expecting but coming from playing Souls games predominantly it is sort or whatever to me. You learn that you’ll earn more and at what thresholds you are willing to risk it for progress or back track to protect it. Eventually there are banks on Hollow Nest where you can store large sums for later use.
