I read that Kurt said in a interview that this song is about people that are consider intelligent and are actually unhappy and the people that are consider as "dumb" are actually humble and happier than the people that are not.

I still remember when the album first came out and I heard this song. The lyric, "My heart is broke, but I have some glue. Help me inhale and mend it with you." Less than a year later, he committed suicide. When I heard the news, this lyric came back to me, immediately. Great song, but bitter sweet.

This is a satire on people who are apathetic. Kurt had a lot to say about people who had nothing to say. You'll notice the theme of apathy underlies every Nirvana song.

To me the sun being gone can symbolize his depression and drug use, he isn’t happy (“the sun is gone”) so he turns to drugs to cope “(but I have a light)” also a worthy note is that you use a lighter or “light” to cook heroin which was his drug of choice
