He made a joke on MTV unplugged about it. Someone yelled... Sing rape me. He said, I don't think MTV would let us play that song. For those who wonder, they started rape me instead of Lithium. And MTV almost cut the live feed

when kurt said “i don’t think MTV would let us play that song” he was actually referring to the request of scentless apprentice that one of the producers (i believe) that why he said is that you kennedy?

I mean, I do get where the interviewer was coming from. Not everybody, especially back in the day, kept up with every statement and interview the guys did and what stance they had on the subject. So a blind, first listen to the song could throw some people off, since it's so raw and straightforward. But then again, the song itself is a fucking banger.

i was a teenager when kurt died...it's truly SO bizarre to see the COLOSSAL chasm between the mentality of ppl back then and the uber-polished media ecosystem now. It makes so much sense cuz we actually already did know what nirvana stood for and what the song meant but they kept asking them like they couldntt believe a band would be against rape or something, it was so weird. nowadays there would be eNDLESS stories and repetitions of this interview all over social media. Back then they only needed to do a few cover interviews for us to know.

Honestly, they shouldn't have had to explain the meaning of this song. I think the fact that people misinterpreted the meaning of a lot their songs bothered them. Kurt shouldn't have had to say that it is anti-rape song. it just goes to show the people who didn't understand the song didn't think like Kurt. he was too smart for his own good. so much that even when he tried to create an anti rape song, it still got taken the wrong way

the problem isn't what the song means, or doesn't mean... the problem is that kurt's lyrics in this song (like most of his songs) are pretty indistinguishable except for the screams of "RAPE ME!!"... so, when someone that isn't aware of nirvana or their stance on rape, they see a dirty grungy dude that's obviously drug ridden and assume anything that comes from him is "bad"... so, they'll assume they're glorifying rape instead of being against it. in other words, they read the headlines (not the story) and make an assumption of the story.

Well maybe it's irrelevant, but it's remind me of what happened to Palestinian. It's like in that same mentally. Just do what ever you want, kill us, man woman children baby elder, bomb us, rape us, burn our school and masjids and churchs, starve us to death, but we will never leave our homeland and never stop fighting. If you are offended, don't listen! It's about the abuses we experienced far too often, by " we"I Imean Gen X. If you didn't live our existence and you don't understand where these lyrics come from or their purpose, Good for You! I'm Truly happy that you don't understand it. Grunge music hit home because it never shied away from dealing with painful, heartbreaking and troubling topics. Gen X had more freedom and less adult supervision than any American generation since 1900, often, much more than what was good for us. We are the latch key kids, 2 parents working (for the first time in our nation's history) we ran wild for hours on end, it made us the perfect prey. There's a reason the 70's were the "Golden Age" of serial killers, because prey were so readily available. We were still basking in the freedom of the Hippie Generation, when people could & did, regularly hitchhike and felt extremely safe doing so. For over a decade it was as safe to allow kids to be outside, on their own for 4-6-8 hrs, as safe as walking to the mailbox. Often times our parents told us to, "go on, get outta the house, be back for___meal (lunch and supper) As long as we showed up then they didn't concern themselves for our safety. Not because they didn't care, but because they grew up with the same freedoms and 95% of the time no danger be fell them. Grunge music is dirty, difficult, painful and moving, because it was the first musical genre to deal with the horrors of the modern American life. Do you criticize Emily Dickinson for her morbid topics? No? Why? Because you understand that truths, that life, is not all butterflies and rainbows; it's often painful, dark and disgusting. Music is poetry set to melody. If you don't like a song, don't listen, but millions of people find this song poignant and relevant, even cathartic and validating. It screams, "you are not alone, others have suffered your same abuses and it's BS, it's unfair, but you aren't alone." We live in a Free country, listen/don't listen, but don't interfere with other's choices, keep your judgement to yourselves. . Okay, you don't like it, go back into your glass castle and leave the rest of us alone. There are millions of victims that find this song soothing, validating their suffering and refusing to pretend like nothing ever happened. That was many parents response to molestation, r***, pedophilia, "Just keep it too yourself" because then the damage and pain will just 'Disappear'. Why Americans cannot seem to grasp the simple, eternal, concept of, "Live and Let Live" is beyond me. We are the country of Freedom, but it seems every year we're becoming less and less free. Don't like the look, don't wear it, don't like the content, don't read it, don't like the message or subject matter, put your fingers in your ears and repeat," LA, La, La, La", but don't, never, do not, "Tread on Me". If we don't stand up for our rights and continue to allow the Uber, super religious right to control our lives, we'll eventually lose all of them. Numerous religious communities (Amish, Mormon, Fundamentalists) have a higher than the national average rate of se**** abuse! This is a fact, so of course they don't want us to talk about it, if we don't it no longer exists. Pouff, like a cloud on a Summer's day, it just disappears. What's my point? Not talking about these painful subjects is far, far worse than doing so. Talking about it is the first step to stopping it and towards healing.

And of course they was seeking all this controversy btw Forget what he said It was staged, i guess he was anti sexual rape sure but thats no the meaning and the kind of violation of the song at all
@Sip_Dhit

Nope the song is about actual sexual, physical rape Not figurative, not perversion It's about sexual violation, it's written from the perspective of a victim reclaiming power by shaming their attacker It's meant to be raw and uncomfortable because we avoid these topics. Previously he had written 'Polly' which similar to Cage the Elephant's 'Pumped up Kicks' is from the perspective of the offender. He's calling attention to the awful event. He's trying to make you remember and not avoid these topics.

Actually you are 100% incorrect. The song was about a real rape and they were bringing it to light to help stop it. The song "Polly" was about an actual abduction of an underaged girl. Hard topics for subject matter but important to bring to light to help stop it! Next time check your facts before you spew out false info!

He says that when the rapist was raped it was justice, yet that he's also anti-rape ... Can those two opinions be held simultaneously?
@antoniopraide6855
@antoniopraide6855 3 жыл бұрын
I think they can. Think of it more like a "suffer the same trauma that you put me through" type scenario. The first victim was completely innocent, they shouldn't receive punishment. But the rapist wasn't, he was guilty. So karma got to him. It's harsh still, but ultimately, the rapist will now feel that same pain twicefold. One part for the fact he has to suffer with the trauma of it happening for the rest of his life, and the second part because he will get even more punishment, hate, and overall suffering due to being in prison; hopefully for the rest of his life. So yeah, I suppose they can be held in unison. But on the contrary, rape is definitely a terrible thing, and anybody who does, or even considers it, should be killed on the spot.

@@antoniopraide6855 the comment the OP left is a kind of a paradox. A paradox is a seemingly absurd or self-contradictory statement that when investigated or explained may prove to be well founded or true. OP asked if Kurt could be anti-rape when he called the rape of the rapist justice. But like the definition said if it is investigated or explained it can be well founded and true. Your comment investigated and explained that it is possible hold those two rape opinions. Dwight Schrute is character from the tv show The Office and he said paradox in a few episodes.

the problem isn't what the song means, or doesn't mean... the problem is that kurt's lyrics in this song (like most songs) are pretty indistinguishable except for the screams of "RAPE ME!!"... so, when someone that isn't aware of nirvana or their stance on rape, they see a dirty grungy dude that's obviously drug ridden and assume anything that comes from him is "bad"... so, they'll assume they're glorifying rape instead of being against it. in other words, they read the headlines (not the story) and make an assumption of the story.

It is widely speculated that Kurt may have experienced SA himself when he was young. We can't know for sure but there are some signs in his background that he was. It is arrogant to assume who is or isn't a victim. If you look up the rough draft lyrics of the song it is even more apparent that the song is supportive of victims.
