I think this album is a masterpiece and it's crafted incredibly well, but it only works for me if I treat it like a book or movie. I gotta start from the beginning and go all the way through. For example, "u" literally feels like a scene out of a movie, so it's weird when it randomly comes on shuffle. There are only a couple of songs I can listen to on their own and really enjoy, but mostly it feels better as a whole. Does anyone else feel this way?
@christiandiordenimflo9 жыл бұрын

I completely agree. I was excited about the album but I hadn't really enjoyed the singles ( I, Blacker The Berry) because I was listening to them out of context. I've been listening to the album endlessly for the past few days and its honestly one of the most satisfying experiences in music I have ever had. Each new listen I get that much closer to figuring out and deciphering the messages he places into the songs. I salute Kendrick for believing in his fans\listeners and not insulting their intelligence by giving us something to really analyze and sink our teeth into. Kendrick is a living legend, the kind of artist i'll be telling my children about when they ask who I loved and listened to as a young man.

However, I forced my self to learn the lyrics to everyone of these songs, then went on to try and listen to each song as I follow the lyrics on my screen. And thus, this is now the first album I have ever understood the lyrics to, and it's one of the greatest things I have ever had the privilege of listening to. That's all I wanted to say really. When people say “why do you watch music reviews” I point them to this video. Your passion and attention to detail to the point of view of the artists is very admirable. I went through a slump where I didn’t appreciate music as much but as I watched the video on how you review music to see videos like this I started changing the way I listened. This definitely caused me to stop enjoying a lot of artists i use to because I stopped looking for catchy one liners and “hard” beats. But it made me appreciate not only real hip hop artists who put time and thought into their albums, but other genres I may not have cared for. Basically I wrote this to be another to acknowledge your impact on music and it’s listeners. In case you ever see this never stop being you!

As a metalhead who rarely goes out of his way to listen to other stuff, I decided to finally give Kendrick Lamar a try. I listened to Section.80 and GKMC, and I’m upset that I’ve been missing out on this art. Kendrick has an amazing ability to write compelling and in depth stories in his lyrics and flows while not giving up awesome instrumentals and just overall catchy music. It’s artists like this that make me wanna venture off into more hip hop music. I’m onto TPAB and I’m so interested in how it’s supposed to top his previous 2, since I just cannot stop listening to them. EDIT: TPAB is one of the best albums ever

@@FakeAdirTVthere is the point of how certain songs resonate with people and their subjective tastes, but there is also something to be said about it in context of listening to each track on the album in order. Dylan Connolly Totally agree. On first listen I didn't like the non-crossover joints. I mean you could like Alright, Hood Politics, These Walls on first listen but for the deeper meaning in Wesleys Theory, For Sale?, U, and the rest it takes a while to digest.

I love a lot of Kendrick Lamar's lyrics. But I feel like I have to sit down and read them to actually fully understand them and then research the references to god and the older rappers. I like his music but I feel like a lot of the lyrics go over my head.

That's part of what keeps it enjoyable, ya find something new everytime ya here it. And the fact that he can weave such a web is a huge testament to him as well. But yeah, everytime ya here it ya have something new to chew. I prefer that to something like Drake's new album for example any day. Ya here that once and ya got it, but Lamar gives you something with repeatability.

I don't think any album has ever made me feel the way that this did. The deep message along with the AWESOME basslines and jazz elements makes me feel so great. I would give it an 11/10, but that's over the limit, so 10/10 is perfect. Kendrick Lamar got me into hip hop and it is still my favorite hip hop album, possibly album in general.

This album was one of the greatest experiences i've ever had in all my years listening to hip hop. A bizzare, funky, jazz influenced trip but at the end so rewarding. This album has everything from originality to great production, real messages and a very mature Kendrick which seems to ''age'' like wine does. You can argue for days which album is better this or GKMC but at least respect an artist going entirely out of his confort zone and delivering such a satisfying result. The game lacks a fresh approach and we should all encourage when rappers take the extra mile and deliver something new. I'd give this album a strong 9. Way to go K-Dot.

This album ended up becoming my gateway hip-hop record. On my first couple of listens, I was loving it for the instrumentals. And then the lyrics started making a glimmer of sense. And then the conversation at the end started making sense, and I learned its context. And now I'm listening to this thing every other day. And I was proudly saying only a few months ago that I didn't dig hip-hop at all.

+David Rosen Wait till you expand your horizons. You'll realise this album is little more than critic bait.
@david5000069 жыл бұрын
While I am looking forward to expanding my horizons, I'm not sure that that's a fair assessment. Maybe some of the lyrical content. But the music itself seems so fully realized, I find it hard to believe that it was all done just to impress critics.

+Ich Mein Suuuure...or is it because you were expecting pop-songs and didn't like what your heard because it took more than one listen to enjoy.
@kazoh0lic8 жыл бұрын
UnBR0k3enAngel Nah, I think it's a good album but GKMC was fairly better. It's just very profitable to speak from a moral pedestal. Even if it doesn't sell well, you'll have people calling you a prophet for pointing out the obvious. TPAB is the equivalent of a movie about gay people or slavery. Critics just eat that shit up.
