This is the original key in which the song was performed. The comment Kurt made about a different key was in reference to a rehearsal they did prior to the show, where Kurt played it differently; it's on youtube, actually.

4:39, Kurt cobain messes up a guitar note, and so he masks the error by singing in the pitch of the mistake. That’s one of my favorite clever things he did in this performance, it goes to show you he thinks his playing. This masking adds to the already vulnerable and broken sound.

Sad story - 'Pennyroyal tea' was supposed to be the next single from Nirvana's 1993 album 'In Utero'... It was remixed by R.E.M. producer Scott Litt (from the original album mix by Steve Albini) for a '94 release... Tragically, Kurt Cobain's death in April '94 ended Nirvana and all promotion of the 'In Utero' album... and the single was not released. The "MTV Unplugged" album was released in '94 showcasing the iconic performance by Nirvana... Unlike most bands that performed their hits w/ acoustic guitars, Nirvana chose a set of obscure Nirvana songs and covers, like - 'About a girl'... 'On a plain' ... 'Dumb' ... 'Where did you sleep last night' ... 'The man who sold the world'... 'Lake of fire'... etc. However, the remixed 'Pennyroyal Tea' was included in the 2002 'Nirvana' (self-titled album) which was a 'greatest hits' album for Nirvana and included their last recorded song "You know you're right"...
@mikefetterman67828 ай бұрын
This is the original key from the album (might be a quarter tone tuned down, but not a different key.) This show was their songs played acoustically. They also had a few songs with the Meat Puppets (another indie Pacific northwest band). on the performance. This is my favorite Nirvana project.

The "acting strange" was just Kurt being super nervous about this concert because it's so intimate. Also the fact that he was a huge heroin addict by this point in his life. Thank you for continuing reactions to this concert.

Kurt was COMPLETELY CLEAN at this time. He looked the best he had in over a year and was starting to get his life back together, but obviously the Black Widow of Grunge couldn't possibly allow that to continue, especially as SOBER Kurt was beginning the process of divorcing the b1tch.
@TheTrequarista9 ай бұрын
@@paulsmith2516he was in withdrawal during the Unplugged. The production couldn't find him heroin so in the end he took Valium if I recall, to diminish at least a bit the withdrawal syndroms. He was clean earlier, during the In Utero recording session, but at the time of the MTV set he was addict again, wich was already a bad signe for the incoming European Tour ( he never travelled with drugs so you have to find along the way and that was difficult exept the week in Paris in febuary 94).

This Unplugged set is one of the best performances in the series' history. Any changes to their original music and the covers were all slights to MTV and the Record company for trying to force Nirvana to play their hits. Kurt said he wasn't interested in playing Smells Like Teen Spirit on an acoustic guitar. It was the rebellious and defiant nature of the band. Favorite songs from the performance are Lake of Fire, About A Girl, On A Plain, Man Who Sold the World and Oh Me since you already did Where Did You Sleep Last Night.

This song is one of my favorite Nirvana songs and favorites from this performance Lyrically, at least to me, it’s about someone who is done with the world; who is very hurt emotionally and is tired of life Kurt performing this solo makes it even more poignant knowing what we know now Also, pennyroyal tea was something women would drink to terminate pregnancies (whether it did or not is debated)
@jams_world819 ай бұрын
Their cover of David Bowie’s “man who sold the world” and “where did you sleep last night” are my two favorites from this set. This one is ok but not the best to react to in my opinion. Kurt was very nervous about the close setting and it being perfect. He was a perfectionist more than people realize, the distortion of their music and the studio hides a lot. He wasn’t acting strange, that’s just Kurt being Kurt in my opinion.

I don't know where the idea of Kurt being weird in this show came from, he was the best he'd been in over a year at the time and was even clean and sober. As far as this song goes, Kurt NAILED IT! This is how the song is MEANT to sound. It's by far the closest to it's original recording as it was always a slow simple quiet song.

"I can relate to these lyrics." I sure hope not. :-) I can't hear this song without thinking "suicide note". Yes, pennyroyal tea is a supposed abortifacient, but as a dude, the probability that the life he was talking about distilling was a pregnancy is small. I think its a bit more metaphorical than that. This is a song about extreme depression, with references to Kurt's personal issues such as stomach pain and impostor syndrome, as well as refernces to death. And he sang it with feeling. Or maybe I'm just projecting the end onto an earlier part of the story. PS Missed my chance to meet Leonard Cohen, but there are probably worse people to hang with in the afterlife. Bet the dude would have a million great stories.
