The way Krist pats Kim's shoulder and rubs it when Black Hole Sun begins to play is so wholesome. It doesn't look like much but it speaks volumes when you know about each other's tragedies. Such a small but huge emotional exchange.

Krist is like the unsung hero of Nirvana. The guy's got no ego to bruise and his bass lines support the songs so well. They're simple enough but filled with character. He can be both in the pocket and super loose depending on the context and he'll often put in some nice little "walking" notes or fill type bits in that really help the 3 piece setup. Of course there's the space to do it in that context as well so it never sounds like it's crammed in or something. Super groovy player considering the punk basis of the band.

About a week after Krist and Curt gave me the demo cassette of Nevermind I went to a job in Rhode Island. I was playing the tape on and off for the crew and then they were wearing it out so I pulled it, turned on the FM and put the tape in my jacket. Bout an hour later I heard "Polly wants a cracker" . I'm all ,"you bastards took my tape outta my pocket?". They're "no it's the radio". I'm "no way, these are friends of mine in Seattle"....sure enough it was on the radio. Coast to coast in a matter of weeks. Phenomenal

Krist is definitely the most underrated bass player of the 90s - I'll tell you why: watch any Nirvana live video, see him jump and listen to the precision he still has! He's like Nirvana's Ringo Starr - what he plays is not the most technically advanced bass playing, but it's perfect in each and every song.

Krist and Ringo were also each really important in the social dynamics of their bands, as chilled-out, pleasant, reliable people who anchored the more volatile members. Krist was Kurt's close friend, not just some musician he recruited -- it doesn't seem like Nirvana could've existed without him any more than it could've existed without Kurt.

@@rozzer666 To elaborate, as a child he told his sister that he was going to be famous some day and he really did play with the idea of being one of the greats in music. But success came so fast for Nirvana. now granted, they had been a band grinding it out in crummy clubs for years, but when Nevermind came out the band was strapped to a rocket taking them to the height of fame. Probably to a place he had dreamed of but also a place he didn't expect to get to so soon. I always felt that Kurt felt that in many ways he didn't deserve for several reasons but he wanted that validation to make him feel like maybe he did deserve the recognition. At the same time I feel that Kurt felt uncomfortable to some extent with his fame. At the same time though, he was probably really happy with the money which represented a level of security that he had never known before.

The entire culture of Western Civilization turned upside down in 4 weeks,and it was never the same. If you lived it,no explanation needed. December 1991,punk hardcore & extreme metal shows changed in 5 days metaphorically. The underground was over,it was dizzying to experience. We didn't know punk/ skinhead fights,100 people screaming along with out of town bands,bouncers throwing skinny 14 yr olds off the stage,(like me) no normal people in sight,etc were gone with the wind. Raves picked up numbers 1992-1994 because it was underground for few yrs during the "alternative" craze.

It’s not the first time I’ve heard Krist say something like “it should have never happened” he has also said “he should never have done that”. Such simple phrasing yet profoundly philosophical about the death of his friend. Krist is a legend, seeing him lament the death of his best mate is just bloody sad.

I remember seeing an interview with Krist a long time ago after Nirvana ended (RIP Kurt) where he commented on how so many young fans would approach him and thank him. When he would ask them “Why are you thanking me?” their responses were universal: “Because Nirvana saved my life”. In 1991, mine was a life on the brink. I was in a total free fall and was going to end up either dead or in prison. And then Nirvana came along. This rock band is the only reason why I have my freedom today. Thank you Kurt and Krist.

A lot of times, us as fans can be selfish without even thinking about it. When Kurt and Chris both passed, a lot of fans (including me) reacted to it from how it effected us. Seeing interviews like this really reminds you that so much more was lost than just our favorite guitarist / singer / artist at the time. Cruelest part is they have to try to translate the art, and they do clinically and anecdotally, but Cobain and Cornel were probably winging it off their influences in reaction to music trends, pro and against...but their creation propelled the other people/band members...and the band members were use in good way, to advance art in moment in time...but now they're abandoned in reflection of it succeeding...Together they liked to say loaded, stream of conscious things in interviews, while now they look like they carry big responsibility trying to contextualize in hindsight.

I'm 39, and Kurt inspired me more than any musician in my life. At age 10, I was absolutely obsessed. He was our Lennon. My favourite guitar is a sea-foam green Fender Jagstang, designed by Kurt. The whole reason I got into music was because of Nirvana.

It’s funny bc if you had asked people who were roadies for their tours or were interviewers a lot of them would probably say that Krist was an ass. Now the guys insanely likable and you can’t help but to think that maybe part of that is due to not only losing Kurt but also how that all went down since Kurt had assaulted krist at the airport when krist took him to go to rehab days before Kurt’s death. Obviously age also has an effect but losing a friend in that manner has to fuck with you especially after a falling out of sorts like that

The forth guy sitting here is Jack Endino of the band Skinyard, who were another early Seattle band. Around 1985 or 86 me and my friend Carmela got a Skinyard demo and tried to get them signed to the label Alternative Tentacles since we were friends with the head of the label. But she said “I don’t need to sign this band. They’re mainstream”. But Endino had told us that the mainstream labels said they were too punk rock. I think that epitomized the conundrum the Seattle sound created which is why it wasn’t until almost five years later that Nirvana and the rest really broke out. I wish Rick had asked Endino about Skinyard. To my ears they were like a punk rock King Crimson.

These interviews are such gems for music lovers of different generations. This one covers my generation, and man i can't really tell how that feels hearing these icons i loved so much... I stopped listening to Nirvana and Soundgarden at one point, around 20 years ago. I didn't want to overhear theim, i was at the verge of it. Now hearing these ... I'll say it, GODS of my teenage years, and also realizing they are icons of the past, it's as thrilling as melancholic. Brings me back reminiscences of my turbulent adolescence moods. I used to push my niece, who was born with schisencephaly , in her wheelchair to see the ponies. We would hum Black Hole Sun together. She had to move away for better care and every time I hear that song it makes me cry

I'll be off to watch Montage of Heck after this. Nirvana.... a moment in time, for which im thankful I lived through. One of those bands that come along and re-write the way forward, along with a few other top bands breaking out at that time. I love the ever changing nature of music and how infinite it seems. RIP Kurt Cobain, gone too soon, but definitely will never be forgotten.

For years I was sad about Kurt's death and wished he was still here. Now that I'm older I'm kind of glad he was immortalized at age 27. Seeing Krist and Dave get older makes me a bit sad. I wouldn't have wanted to watch my teenage idol grow old. Whenever I think of Kurt, I picture how he looked at the Nirvana MTV Unplugged. The wool cardigan, the greasy blonde hair tucked neatly behind his ears, and those piercing blue eyes.

I saw Soundgarden live in '96 in Germany. Thoughout the 2 hours and a half or 3 hours they played, Chris never removed his stare that was fixed at some point ahead close to the roof of the venue. They were like a heavy industrial machine. Good memories

I did see pearl jam and Bush, RHCP but never Soundgarden or nirvana. I never got to see any other grunge band like Tad, Alice in chains. @@dylandenney3980 I was thinking it would be a good name for an actual Prog-Rock band, one that just doesn't give a damn if their style or their instrument solos are perceived as gratuitous or not. I think their first album cover should have the bands name across the top: "Gratuitous Prog" Directly below the band name is a band photo, or whatever artwork they prefer. At the bottom of the album cover is the album's title: "Deal With It!" I guess, that's sort of a "Prog-Punk" attitude, now that you mention it. 🙂

That's definitely the most I've ever heard Kim speak. I liked hearing him talk. When he mentioned Andy i was almost shocked because if not thought of Andy wood for a LONG time but i had the Apple record and played it all the time in 90s. I agree that the prolific writing of Andy and Chris really defined then. They had such a wide array of songs they could go to fit any album or band change up.

I couldn't care less which guitarist played which part on the recording. What I've ALWAYS wanted to know was how were those chords choose during the solo? It's one of the strangest parts to a rock song I've ever heard and it's amazing in ways I can't articulate. It takes so long to resolve the tension being built but the resolve just feels perfect. One of the best written songs in the last thirty years.

Ive met Krist in seattle in 1996 and he was very warm and sincere. I actually didn't even know who he was, One night at the hop vine pub on 15th ave he bought me a beer and we had conversation then he left and my friend told me who he was and i was blown away.

Hearing the intro to Black Hole Sun made me think of the first time I heard it when it just came out, my buddy says have you heard the new Soundgarden and he puts BHS on and it literally brought tears to my eyes (granted we were really high) and leave the room after about a minute- it was like being kicked in the face with sadness and hope and bitterness and beauty all at once. I've only felt that a handful of times in my life, that song was a whole other level than what bands at that time were doing

Krist remained close at heart to Kurt no matter how long it passed since he lost his best friend. Dave sort of moved on with his new band but one can see in every interview how much Krist misses him. RIP Kurt.

I’ve loved Nirvana since I was in 5th grade. I remember the first time I heard them. There’s never been a band as important to me. That being said I met Krist around 2003-4 when he was touring speaking on politics. He was just standing by himself after he spoke. I walked over to meet him I had to. When I got over to him it was if I’d walked up on a mountain. He’s giant of a man. Reached his giant hand out to shake mine. One of the greatest moments of my life!

I love how Kim said black hole sun was psychedelic! That song/video was released when I was 17 years old. My best friend (whom I’m still friends with to this day) and I skipped school and dropped some bad acid then watched the black hole sun video! Wow it was insane! 😵‍💫
