Kurt was always really good at winging lyrics to a riff he had and when Nirvana couldn't think of a song to play that is when the band would fuck around and Kurt would play something the band had previously rehearsed of course, much like the live version of "Sappy" that began as "Verse Chorus Verse." Krist and Dave were usually pretty good about just going along with new material in a live setting from what I have seen, Kurt would play the riff a couple of times and then Dave would come in and I imagine Krist would just watch and listen to what Kurt was playing and he just came up with a bass line on the spot if that is what was needed.

TYVM for posting NC. And thx to Layne Cobain for lyrics. YNYR is one of my very favorite #Nirvana tunes. This live version is quite different from the studio version. First time I encountered this Aragon Ballroom version, I listened to it about a dozen times -- and wept at the pain I was hearing from him. The lyrics are devastating. "You gave me my first kiss, I don't think I want it now" and somewhere I was hearing "Wish I'd never kissed you, wish I'd never met you, I won't dare to love again" OMG. So I'm hearing him screaming both "Heeeyeey" AND "Paaaaiiiiiiin". I read where Butch Vig and Jack Endino got together to listen to the master tape of this performance and they both hear it as "Heeeeyyy" NOT "Paaaiiin" -- but I hear what I hear. And amazing no one thought Chicago was important enough to videotape. #nirvana

Kurt never failed to appear on stage. Never threw a famous person late entrance. never cancelled, postponed ...until a doctor told him to stop for 6 months and rest voice due to larangitis on march 2,94... Krist said Kurt was a consumate professional. Guitar tech said he was as serious as anyone about putting on his best show, every show. I think the 6 month break was worrying his wife as Kurt had time to think about leaving her so she spiked his drink the following day.

People read too much into Kurt's lyrics, even he said so in interviews. Often times he just came up with nonsense to go along with the melody of the song. Also, even if it was about Courtney, he could have meant the lyrics in a joking way (though I'm sure you nut jobs still would think Courtney had him killed regardless or think I am a Courtney shill lol)

Mad to think that Kurt went from asking the crowd at Reading 1992 to chant “Courtney we love you” to writing this little ditty about her in the space of a year. She went through him like a ton of bricks.

I really like the version on the 'best of album', I seriously reckon if he finished the song as he desired it would have been one of their best, this version sounds good, just too harsh to hear properly.
@EngineOfRuin11 жыл бұрын
Well, this one here is from a concert. The version on the best of album is the studio recording - it was actually the last song Kurt, Krist and Dave recorded together.

Much like "Riders On The Storm" arguably was for The Doors, this song (the final studio recording for Nirvana) might just be song Cobain and co. wrote and recorded!! At least they were able to perform it live as a band -- the same can't be said for The Doors and "Riders..." as Morrison died before they were able to tour in support of their final album on which that song first appeared.

I was so happy when this track was released. It was long overdue and gave closure to Nirvana fans. It was both old but new and sure as fuck beat the hell out of boy band shit. It was like grunge came back from the dead in a new world of nu-metal, white rappers, Mickey Mouse Club pop princesses and boy bands.

This is awesome. When I saw them in Springfield MA 1993 Kurt played this songs main riff while lying on the stage at the end of the set. Krist was fooling around and threw some water at Kurt by shaking a water bottle. Kurt then stood up and threw his guitar at the disco ball above the stage. Show over. Didn't know at the time that riff was this song. You can hear all this here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/epjap6Bobrp5gdk
