@pickleo27566 жыл бұрын
True might it the second one just seems like momentum and the first one seemed like Ovechkin was trying to fully anticipate the backhand and didn’t know Crosby would stay forehand but what makes sense is when you got a naturally aggressive player like that playing against what’s known as his rival team, in the playoffs and he(Ovechkin) is trying to go far beyond to better them(which makes sense why Ovechkin was looking for Crosby’s back hand-he might have been trying to exploit repetitiveness in Crosby’s game) but couldn’t execute and resulted in a slash to the arm and another one to the head. Also people say Crosby was knocked out before niskanen touched him, that explains why he’s off balance. But if anything if you watch very closely, you’ll see Ovechkins right skate right behind Crosby’s at the last minute-indicating that Crosby lost his balance from his foot being forcefully(Ovechkin was fast and strong on his feet so that has to be taken into account) swept from ovechkins skate which inevitably led to Crosby being checked in the head. Pens fan btw.

There wasn't a lot Niskanen could do there, Sid went right into his path. Think the bigger problem there was the guy who slashed him before that(was it Ovie?). If Crosby isn't falling, refs wouldn't have even called that a penalty as it would have been a crosscheck to the back/side. Really ugly thing to see, just not sure Niskanen deserves the blame he is getting

Yeah, Ovi was luck to get away with such a dirty play there. Hit him with a baseball swing to the arm, head, and then tripped him with his right foot as he followed through. Both should have been penalized on that play, even if Niskanen didn't intend to check him in the head.
@killer253187 жыл бұрын
i really don't know that slash that's what started it
@JanneTarhanen7 жыл бұрын
It's Ovie's fault to get Crosby to lose his balance and then collied's to Niskanen stick. If you look carefully, you can definitely see Ovie's slash to side of Crosby and then trip from behind with Ovie's right leg. This causes Crosby to lose his balance and begins to fall down. Rest is history. Without that trip, the cross-check would have hit to upper arm of Crosby.

It should be different. Unlike 98% of the league, superstars are targeted far more, but they are also the league's highest draw. That was a 5 minute major anytime the ref sees it, regardless of the player -- but because it is Sid, it should be a 5 min, because if you let every jobber trying to stay in the big league get away with that, then you're risking the best players.
@longliverocknroll57 жыл бұрын
80teg No, it shouldn't. Should cop killers get extra term because cops are involved with criminals more often and therefor assume more risk? Of course not. This argument is and ALWAYS will be bullshit. It's a 2 minute minor. Cross check that results from a falling player that the checker has ZERO time to react to. Crosby doesn't fall, Niskanen makes a clean hit and doesn't need to extend his arms in a reactionary motion to a player falling in front of him. T BZ Which is bullshit when it is 100% accident.

The blatant slash/interference by a Ovi is an inexcusable non-call. How is that missed? That contact triggers the fall by Crosby into Niskanen, who I think is just putting his hands up in a reactionary defense; guy falling into him so he protects himself during play. The contact occurs when Niskanen could not have intended to target Crosby’s head like that. No one can.

Half the people saying this was intentional have no idea how fast the game is and that this is just a hockey play with an unfortunate result. It's easy to say it was accidental when you watch a super slo-mo replay, but clearly accidental. Hope Crosby recovers quickly, the NHL is much better when he's playing.
@NomSauce11 ай бұрын
Tbh the unsped footage almost looks more intentional, it's so obvious during the slowmo that Niskanen is barely able to react to what's happening. He does a very human thing when you're suddenly faced with something that feels like danger and it's to raise your hands against whatever is coming.

To those who think this wasn't intentional: Slow down the video to 0.25 and fastforward it to 1:39. Look at Niskanen's hands when the replay starts, he has one hand on his stick, which is a normal behavior during this particular play. Crosby gets a vicious slash from Ovechkin, a hard enough hit so the stick has a rebound effect after hitting Crosby. Now, Niskanen. Right before the hit, Niskanen, who is holding the stick with his left hand, now grabs it with his right hand. Not only did he use both hands to deliver a cross-check to the head willingly, his right hand took the stick from underneath so that he could maximize the impact the stick would have on Crosby's head. I've played hockey a little and although I haven't played in the NHL or anything, I know darn well that usually, a normal behavior would be to hold your stick in one hand and just push/shove the guy upon contact to protect yourself. Niskanen delivered a cross-check because it was the playoffs and he wanted to destroy that guy because the stakes are high and they needed the win no matter the cost. The only moment when you should need to have your two hands on a stick is when you're expecting a pass ( whether it be from a teammate or an adversary ) or when you're handling the puck. If you're holding your stick with two hands when the puck is not going your way, you have bad intentions. A bunch of years ago, Mario Lemieux threatened to leave the NHL if they didn't make hooking illegal. It's now time to do the same with high-sticking and cross-checking, otherwise someone will eventually get killed.

steve hardman I don't know how people can defend WSH for all the dirty play they initiate. Tom Wilson slew footed Sheary, cross checked Guentzel from behind, elbowed Daley, jumped onto ZAR and left his feet on a high late hit on the head of Dumoulin. Totally classless organization. And for all these stupid Americans trying to talk about the rules, go home. Hockey is a Canadian game, and Americans haven't even played it enough to understand the rules. Niskanen's attack on Sid was a late cross check to the head, regardless if it's intentional or not. Far away from the puck. It's a reckless violation. Ovie shouldn't have slashed him on the head either. WSH were very lucky an event like this didn't start a line brawl.
@WEFAHawkStreet7 жыл бұрын
Watch the video at 1:30. Screw the slow motion and everything. I don't think the head hitting was intentional. Niskanen definitely went for the cross check, but with the speed of the play, I highly doubt he meant to smoke him in the face. He was just trying to get him away from the net for a rebound. Definitely a penalty for cross checking, definitely intentional, but not meant for the head. The true speed of the play shows that.

Twaid Tortoise i am sorry my friend but that doesnt make any sense. Slowmot looks brutal, but in real time he had no time to react. And you dont care if it was an accident? That is the most important thing in this. He was giving a normal hit that u do always infront of goal, but Crosby fell down, and it got him right in the head. True thing also is that everyplayer has to control their stick, so thats why he got booted. U can high stick someones teeths out by pure accident, it happens.
@vincentlaforest17567 жыл бұрын
TheM4yhem I completely agree with you. Niskanen had no time to react, he did want to give Crosby a crosscheck, probably to the chest to stop him his progression (he is after all the best player in the league), but Crosby fell down so quickly he didn't have time to change his action... It's really unfortunate for Crosby though, I hope he's not injured... I really wanted a classic Ovi-Sid rivalry. If the caps win this series, they will be asking themselves if they finally won against Pittsburg because Sid wasn't there (and Letang + Murray). LOL
@nick-zd3fk7 жыл бұрын
Twaid Tortoise Yes, allow us to say that he had time to react as we watch multiple slowed down replays. Unfortunately, that's not how reality works. It probably happened way too fast for Niskanen, and he reacted instinctually. That type of check isn't uncommon near the net.
@kosMAGNET7 жыл бұрын
Anyone that thinks this was intentional has never played hockey before. Things happen so fast when you're playing full speed. Ovechkin was just trying to stop crosby from scoring so he "slashed" him. Crosby was trying to draw the penalty and trying to sell it. There is no way Crosby with that lower body strength could fall from a weak slash like that. Those sticks weigh next to nothing and Ovechkin barely swung it. I've been slashed harder and haven't fell. As for Niskanen, he was just coming full speed and ran into crosby, putting your arms up like that is just instinct as a player.

If it was anyone except Crosby it would not be a game. Everyone knows it too.

you know pittsburgh has all black and gold for their teams right? and that they changed the colors because of the success of the steelers and pirates and were hoping for good luck from it. also there was the pittsburgh pirates, not the baseball team, in 1925 that had black and gold sooo...
@alexgammino7 жыл бұрын
DUKE3654 I know you aren't talking to me, but I don't care that Pens have Bruins colors. As a Bruins fan I can see that there are other teams with same colors. Oilers and Isles. Leafs and Bolts. Rangers and Habs. etc.

I dont watch Hockey so i hope im coming from a unbiased standpoint but that looked completely unintentional. He skated right into the guy, what is he supposed to do hold him and stop him from falling? The guy before if anything should be penalized for trying to straight smack him at 1:40.... That is an intentional hit...
@justinpavic10885 жыл бұрын
Crosschecking is not allowed to anyone without the puck, like Crosby here
@teddyruxpin81157 жыл бұрын
I'm impartial to these teams. That was a nasty slash and high stick, and then a cross check. Even if he didn't mean to cross check his head, he still cross checked him.

This doesn’t look intentional but it also looks like a play that’s avoidable and one of the types plays that the league is trying to get rid from

Kinda funny, when the penalty notification came to top center of the screen, it say "Matt Niskanen" but actually it's Matti Niskanen.
@axelwilner7 жыл бұрын
A day later and the NHL is not taking disciplinary action because there was no intentional hit. Watching replays proves this. Just because Crosby was in bad shape does not mean there was a major penalty. It was totally irresponsible for the referees to change it to a major without reviewing tape. The referees made a huge mistake yesterday giving a game misconduct to Niskanen. All this did was get all of the morons riled up. So what about Hornqvist's friendly fire hit to his own teammate Conor Sheary that resulted in a possible concussion as well? Was that intentional too? These guys are going at it near full-tilt and things are going to happen. Players in this playoff are getting knocked off left and right. No way anyone can prove definitively that the Niskanen hit was intentional. These comments are just a sign of how stupid and quick-to-judge the average viewer has become. Completely biased with no objectivity. Ultimately it's really sad that Crosby is gone. The Caps were barely able to win with him out of the lineup. If the Caps do end up winning the series it will be bittersweet anyway because they are now playing a very crippled team.

People, please look at the video. Ovechkin hits him high on the right shoulder with his stick and then his right skate meets Crosby's left skate. As he begins to go low/fall, Niskanin is coming with his left shoulder facing Crosby. his hands are already in the cross check position. As Crosby gets close to Niskanin he clearly turns into him with a cross check and "accidently" checks him in the head. He may not have intended to cross check his head, but he did intend to cross check him.

2 minutes to OV for hooking, 2 minutes to Niskanen for roughing. Thats it. No doubt it sucks for Crosby and the Pens.
@hughjorgan72117 жыл бұрын
Agree on both counts, although Ovi's could be a slash/highstick. And I'm not sure the latest but Crosby grabbing his head and unable to grab his stick afterwards means he's likely done for the playoffs..at least.

You can clearly see at 1:49 that Sidney embellished on the slash, fell, and niskanen could only put his stick up as a reflex. He did not expect crosby to fall like that, and there wasn't much he could do. If Sid hadn't tried to draw a penalty, maybe he wouldn't have been hit in the head. Not suspension-worthy.
@stroud__7 жыл бұрын
With all due concern for Crosby's head, I have to say that Sid's history of being soft probably caused niskanen to get tossed.

I'm assuming the few people commenting have never played hockey before. It's a hockey play. Niskanen never had his eyes on Crosby, he was following the play.....Ovi hit Crosby' skate, he lost balance and Niskanen lifted his arms as any player would to avoid collision not knowing that Crosby was on his knees. its unfortunate. I am a leafs fan, and I love Crosby, I hate for him to be out but its just hockey.

100% intentional, even at high speed niskanen doesnt raise his hands until after crosby is on his knee's. And on top of that im just sick of players leading this their sticks out. Cross checking needs to be out of the game its a penalty for a reason and some of the cross checks that arent called are just insane.

I love Crosby and I hate when people call him a crybaby etc... BUT, that hit was not done on purpose. It sucks he is hurt cuz he is definitely a great player and the pens will miss him if he is out. But it was an accident and a sad situation. I think it was meant to be a cross check to his back to say back away from my net cuz that was a close call, but when Crosby turned unexpectedly, the cross check hit him in he face. lol that isn't true. Most ppl make what Crosby makes in a day in less than a year.
@andrewkran92637 жыл бұрын
I don't know what to make of it. It looks like he was committed to giving Crosby a pretty standard hockey play shot, and it's unlucky that Crosby is on his way down. At full game speed, once he's committed to the cross check shot, I don't think there was any way to avoid it. It just doesn't seem like his intention was to take Crosby's head off. And when you look at Niskanen's body language after the hit, it just doesn't look like that of someone who was attempting to take a guy's head off.

Crosby got a stick close to the face and decided to dive, mid dive he got crosschecked/hit. Hockey is a fast pace game and they was almost no way to avoid Crosby. If Crosby just took the stick to the face and waited for the refs to call it instead of diving and forcing himself to get hit he would be fine. He just needs to toughen up
