I think it's because so many of these have been trashed and destroyed, so they aren't as ubiquitous as they once were.... Plus, the iconic late 80s and 90s cars are really coming into their own these days and are becoming very desirable. People want to relive their younger years and are willing to pay. Nothing we can really do about it.

It's a 30-yr old car that's not as readily available as it once was. It's one of the legends of the '90s that still has a large following. It's no longer that cheap, beater project that anyone can buy - that was a decade ago. Me working on my S13 today is the equivalent of me working on a '60s muscle car back in the '90s when I was in high school. I understand not wanting to spend the money people are asking for one these days but not sure how you can say it's not a collector car, they're very much like the muscle cars and hot rods that came before them.
@grindersandgears3445
@grindersandgears3445 Жыл бұрын
That's exactly it, it's a generational thing. Boomers had muscle cars, Millennials have the tuners, now that more of them are coming into money, more or looking to buy what they wanted growing up. And just as before everyone treats them as expendable and then suddenly everyone is shocked when there's none to be found after scrapping and parting out fixable cars. It's cyclical, I think there's more of a push as well because anything around late 2000's and up starts becoming too complicated/expensive to hang onto. Get em while you can and hang onto them. At least we have the BRZ/86 now so there's a newer alternative.

That warps my mind when I think of the comparisons like that 😆 My 240SX is as old now as Lt. Bullitt's Mustang was when I was in high school. My E36 M3, which was still in production when I was in high school, is now importable under the 25-year rule.

Well said. A lot of the 90s cars are so timeless as well. I think they will always look good. I remember as a kid seeing rx7s, 240s, and Evo's on the road often but now its such a rare occurrence. I took a girl out in my c5 zo6 and she was blown away by the popup headlights. Called it "retro" lol. Cars just aren't the same now. Wish I could've grown up a little sooner just so I could afford the cars I idolized so much as a kid/teen.

I entirely disagree. Its following the same trend as 70s muscle cars. They made hundred of thousands of Camaros and Mustangs from the 60s to the 70s. But as time goes on, they get totaled out, prices go up as demand rises. 90s JDM cars are following the same trend. The longer people put off buying that 90s car they always wanted, the more they're going to end up paying.

Ah man the SR20 is my all time favorite Nissan motor. I built one for my brother's Sentra SE-R. That car was a LOT of fun. All motor w/ cams and fully ported everything and all the bolt-ons with Eibach springs, poly mounts/bushings and huge front/rear sways and strut bars. Super cheap but fun build and probably around 200 wheel horses but it was so light that it felt quicker than that. Can't build cars like that for dirt cheap anymore. Probably had about 3500.00 into the whole thing, including the car itself. I miss the early 2000s when you could build a fun car like that for less than 5 grand. 😑

If you’re in your 20s, modding a car from the 90’s is about the same time gap as our parents modding cars from the late 1960’s-early 1970’s when we were kids, they’re become classics by definition.

The reason silvias are pretty desirable is because we won't see front-engine, rear-wheel-drive cars that come with minimal electronics (just the ecu really) and weigh 2 tones or less. It's sad to see them sometimes being referred to as "collector's items" because they're meant to be driven, like any other sports car. And as a european, it's even more sad to think about the fact their prices will skyrocket at ~2025 once they're all fully legal to import in the states, which means they'll be made out of unobtainium for us on the other side of the pond.

It's sad that these cars, much like the AE86, suffers from the drift tax. There are fine stock examples that should be considered collector cars if only to save them from being swapped or drifted. Plus, until Nissan includes the S chassis, especially the S13, in their heritage program like they did with the Z's and the GT-Rs, many cosmetic parts will be unobtainable due to scalpers that have original discontinued parts. I have a S13 hatch that's basically kept up a hill in a flat field that I have refused to sell because I know that I won't find one in good condition or fairly priced. And my car isn't even in the best condition. I want to do a restomod on it, but I'm aware that this won't be a short term project once it starts.

For the people that watch this video, check out Collector Car Feed video about why 240s is considered as a collector car. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGPIfJmclr58kLs He explains why the 240s are being treated more as collector cars and that thatdudeinblue got it all wrong. Even when I was watching this video, all I took from thatdudeinblue was that 240s parts and the car it self are expensive now, then he proceed to go on a joy ride in one and explains why he loves driving 240s. Pretty much turning it into another car review than explaining further as to why 240s shouldn't be expensive. I honestly do feel like this video title is clickbaity. I think that Collector Car Feed gives a really good explanation, I would definitely check their video out!

I think it's a combination of nostalgia for those who grew up around these cars combined with not many affordable exciting cars being sold today. So eventually the amount of these classics available just becomes less and less so prices shoot up to the same level as brand new cars until people have to decide between a classic or new and warrantied.
@100xasd
@100xasd Жыл бұрын
Also add to the fact that many of these were totaled back in the day because they were treated as disposable items. These cars were both cheap and fun, meaning you buy one, mod it, then wrap it around a light pole while drifting. After that you buy a second one and keep repeating the cycle as long as you like, up until now.

The price of a car doesn't matter if it is a "collector car" or not. If there is a MINT 240SX COMPLETELY STOCK!!!!!! Enphasis on STOCK and CLEAN!!!!! Then anything can be a collectors car. A clapped out, modified by the owner(s) of it, driven in winter, rusted, abused, not maintained etc and guys are like 15k I know what I got.... The problem is people think they have something special when its been ruined with their modifications, abused, rides like shit, driven in winter etc and want top dollar just because the car is a 240sx. There is a difference people, If I want a car that is used more than 10,000km I am extremely particular in what I want. I want stock. I want garage stored summer only driven. I want the entire service history, I will test drive it. And I will also bring it or have you bring it to the shop of my choosing at my expense for a complete and full inspection. And then you will get a fair offer not the offer YOU want. Because their will be many issues with the car that YOU ignored to repair, their will also be issues with your modifications I will have to restore or re-do to my liking. End of the day I agree it is not a Ferrari F40 and it is not in any way shape or form a collectors car, same with Neon SRT-4's etc.

That was bound to happen because those guys are SUPER meticulous about their cars and I knew how many of them were thrashed and thrown out in the past so it only makes sense they'd be going up in price because everyone has been trying to get their hands on one for the longest time. I'm not too mad though because me personally, I think 90's cars, especially the 96 and older OBD1 cars are very overrated and I prefer the 97+ and even 00's versions of these chassis usually. So it's not hurting to see those go up in price since I don't plan on wanting to own one again as I used to have a 420A Talon 5 speed myself.

I really think they are a collectors car just like the Z car I don't really think anything is going to change with the market on these. To make matters worse we have a lot of RHD cars coming in now also that are worth even more like the Skyline and GTR. So instead of turning to a Skyline or GTR platform people with grab a 240sx and slap in a RB for much less.

I love this video because I feel the same way, everyone's going for big power and then there's me in my mostly stock Mustang having the time of my life with like 270WHP, I do want to add more power don't get me wrong, 400WHP would be nice, but for now I'm more focused on the car's weak point which is its suspension, in terms of Silvia prices, it makes sense with how many have been wrecked over the years, but the drift/collector's tax doesn't help matters

I respectfully disagree with you on the collectability of the 240sx, its clear just like the ef/eg/ek they had bigger production numbers and for a good reason. They are great cars. Now that being said at the price point they bottomed out at and less prestige then other import models they were used and abused. Which drives up the values and desirability to the current values. No they never will be mk4 Supras or fd rx7s but they hold an important place in the culture and give a driving experience that is truly rare, that's why they will always be a collectable.

Not anymore. Too many cars have been trashed in ditches, or have been gutted for "drift car" but never had any actual mods done. Now you just got a bunch of nasty gutted cars with smashed panels and no power. The cheap cars aren't worth fixing and everything else is expensive because they're rare now.

@@Raynedog00 another reason why I am going for a 180sx rather than a 240sx. You can get a factory sr20det at about the same cost as a clean 240sx with a swap. And most of the time japanese people take care of their car more than Americans lol

Hell no!!..A 240 isn't as good as all the cars it borrows it's part's from to be good..z32, q45, Corvette /Camaro/GTO..350z trans..It's a great lil lightweight car..But even in the 90s..it wasn't better than a fc or FD-rx7..Z31/z32, Supra MK3 MK4..NSX..3000GT..It was better than a Miata kind of..🤷🏽..I wouldn't waste the money these days..I would just buy a 92-96 c4 or C5 Vette..if not a 350z..save yourself the headache of borrowing ton of parts and searching through bad examples of a s13 or s14 if you can find one...🏁👍🏽

I had an 89 S13 fastback as my first car back in 2009. Got it as a high school graduation gift. Someone stole it and I moved on to an A70 Supra then stuck with Toyotas for a while after that until I got the Subaru bug. Now that I'm 31 and have a decent amount of disposable income, I looked at 240SX prices thinking I could pick another one up for a relatively sane price. No one within 100 miles of me has anything good for less than $12,000 (running and driving with relatively small mechanical issues) while failed projects are going for $5,000-9,000. There is no way I can support this. At this point, it would be almost the same price to import one, fix it up, and at least have the cool factor of an original RHD car.

I've got a damson s14a with circa 350bhp. No cams, at 1.4bar, z32 maf, 555cc injectors, intercooler, tubular manifold and I'd like to add cams but that's about as much as id like to add to it. I'd like about 330bhp low boost and 400ish high boost as its a street car weekend warrior 🤷‍♂️ even has factory leather seats 😁

It's very strange to me how people act surprised at whats happening to the market....its been happening since cars have existed...and its not just JDM owners. squarebody owners are doing the same thing right now: acting so surprised that they're starting to become worth more than a few grand. the difference I see is JDM guys are concerned with parts availability and are depending on Nissan's program, where as most domestic vehicles have plenty of outside companies stepping up to fill that void(mustangs, c10's, etc)...

Im 41 now and I bought my 1997 5 speed manual S14 when I was 20. From bone stock I did just about everything you could do to that car. Joined the military and took it with me to San Diego where I did the SR20 swap. Took it with me to Hawaii where it got big turbo, injector, fuel pump, stand alone engine management, lsd, battery in trunk, big weight reduction, etc. Had a tasteful body kit, carbon fiber hood, deep dish staggered wheels, man that thing was so much fun. At 365hp and around 2700 lbs there wasn’t much that could touch it back then and getting it sideways was an everyday occurrence lol. I ended up getting out of active duty and sold it for WAYYY less than what I could have got for it and have regretted it ever since. I dream of one day finding another.

Those are not "Silvia Bricks". they are triple projectors. "Bricks" refer only to the dual halogen headlights (from the 1989-1990 Silvia), not the fact that they are rectangular. The dual and triple projectors are referred to as the "projectors".

People can fanboy for the car all they want saying “they’ve been trashed/destroyed” or “nostalgia” but to me it’s the low point cae culture is at now. It’s not about being fast anymore it’s about looking cool. unfortunately most 240s around here are clapped, dirt nasty low, and stock KA. It’s not that there isn’t cheap shitty ones available it’s just everyone with one thinks they have Forrest wangs Silvia instead of a shitty off brand rim, stock, widebody, salvage title with issues 240sx.
