Most of the ones I've diagnosed need a cvt unit around 60-80k. I've also seen two that were still under warranty

Jerking & shuddering would usually need a Valve body I read as they appear to fail and redirect oil incorrectly, current TSB says to not replace CVT but rather just the valve body. How true is this?

the price for a Nissan CVT is not bad at all. I have priced rebuilt Jasper regular transmissions that cost about 3k... CVT failure is not uncommon I change at least one a week at work (Nissan dealership) the most common reason is pressure loss. PC solenoid a or b. I have a 14 Maxima that I have to do this week. no, parts are not available to purchase for repair. you can get valve bodies but that won't fix your problem. it's a pretty easy CVT to change, the RF axle has a trick for easy removal (heat bracket and pry at the same time), subframe has to come out, front exhaust pipe, and transfer Case. that top trans mount is just that 16mm center nut, leave it on there by a few threads, put an old extension (1/2") on your 16mm socket and beat it down with a hammer till the trans drops down a bit. the rest of the job is pretty straight forward. feel free to hit me up if you have any questions, if your doing the job yourself. Auto Fix Pal I have a 2012 Sentra. CVT lost power at 72k. I got a new transmission under warranty. Now I got 106k miles. This time I follow the 30k maintenance. I'm scared I'm out of warranty. Will the CVT be OK if I bring it in every 30k miles?

Christopher Sanchez no guarantee. it's not an issue of fluid maintenance..it's just that some CVTs don't last long.. lots of pressure loss failures (pressure control valves, pumps, etc). if pressure is lost and the CVT belt/chain starts to slip than it's pretty much a done deal. look on the bright side. I had a 2009 370z the other day that needed an automatic transmission and that transmission costs $9,800.00 Dollars new from Nissan before labor..CVT is only about $2300 from Nissan. but don't stress too much I'm hearing that the premature failure rate is about 8% to 10%. Ivan got 180k out of his CVT which is not bad for any transmission.

I agree with some of the other comments. Buy a "new" one, then split the case of the broken CVT and find the failed part. I think most us would love to see the inner workings of Nissan's own design one of these transmissions. Great video Ivan - thanks!

That's how most of the stealerships 'roll'. Had a transmission blow out/break on a company mini van years ago. Dealership took care of it to the tune of 3600. I asked if they where rebuilding it or replacement. He said they no longer repair engines or transmissions- The core goes back to the 'plant' and from there it's rebuilt and sent back out again.... So a repair that might cost a few hundred to fix? Suddenly costs over 3grand...

That's how the Fords are the CVT's are sealed units only a few small repair parts. The Freestyle CVT is over $5k so you got off easy there it could be worse. This is why Ford ditched the CVT trans idea in 2007.

At 186,000 miles, I think you got plenty from the transmission. The CVTs break down much earlier. It used to be a $7,000 bill. You may be able to get by for $3000. Considering that an automatic transmission overhaul would cost you about $2,300 to overhaul, this is not a bad deal. Nissans are great cars. I've owned 4 of them but none of them had CVT. CVT's should be the best, most easily repairable and cheapest to run transmissions. From a technical stand point, they are very simple. It's a shame all these car makers cut so many corners and have given CVTs a bad name.

That cvt may be a record holder at 186,000 miles. There are times when we have to tell a customer with less then 20,000 miles they need a new cvt trans. In those cases it is covered under warranty.

Was thinking the same thing. Most of the FCA vehicles die around the 45-50K mark. Only ones that seem to hold up are driven VERY lightly and not beaten.

You don't get to hear about the ones that have 200+k miles on them and still running fine because they're not complaining. lol. Your best bet is to go through the dealer, we bought one for 08 rogue for 2200 and they supplied us with brand new unit with torque converter, switches, sensors and already filled with fluid. It's same price than getting it rebuild or used unit but has more value since you're getting new unit. When belt snaps it takes out sensors, case, pulleys and its hard to make a good unit out of junked unavailable parts. Don't bother with used or aftermarket rebuilds. Sorry about your trouble, but it's still cheaper than subaru 7k transmission. Also I change fluid in my wife's murano at 50k, fluid was already garbage, so don't trust with sensor or maintenance guide that says lifetime fluid.

I had a 2013 Nissan Rogue that I replace the CVT fluid 40,000 miles after I bought the car. Both the transmission and the engine ran wonderful after changing out the CVT fluid and oil changes for the new serpentine belt on it motor flush for the coolant. Had I not had a inattentive driver plowing the back of my car in Atlanta a year-and-a-half ago I love you still driving the same car.

Would a valve body replacement solve a jerk, shudder issue? there is an active TSB on Sentras (mine is 2014) where it tells you if you have one of the active codes from the table then the valve body replacement is applicable. It doesn't say anything about symptoms but I'm having driving issues where the RPM drops from like 3500 to 2500 during accel. TSB also suggests not to replace the CVT if previous bulletins said to do so after diag. Thank you for any advice.

Engine, CVT transmission, rear differential because I do have all-wheel drive is doing fine. I told a 15 ft fiberglass boat with no issues over the last year with my Nissan Rogue.

I have driven all three transmission types. Automatic, Manual and CVT. For a modest to moderate power engine, A CVT cannot be beat. They just flat out work. For their smoothness, economy and performance they are my choice. The exception would be a fun time car like a Mazda Miata or Mustang. Compared to the current crop of automatics and manuals, a CVT has way more gear ratio choices, is lighter, smaller and a whole lot less complex with far fewer parts. If they figure out how to make them work and last with high torque and high horsepower engines without breaking, they will take over. Since they are computer controlled, making them work like a floppy paddle manual or slap stick shift should be a piece of cake.

My 2011 Sentra owners manual says to change the CVT trans fluid every 60,000 miles. Just before it hit 60K I bought 8 quarts of NS-2 and changed the fluid, still going @ 75K. It only used like 5 quarts though. Since you have to pull the trans anyway, might as well tear it apart, check for a blown gasket or cracked pump, etc.

I have Nissan Altima 2013 SV 2.5L My Car lose power while I'm driving , and it's not accelerating. I call Nissan affairs customer service, I asked them if my car has a recall for the Transmission, They told me No, I ask them for Assistant to fix my car. She said yes, we can open case for you but you have to go to the dealer for diagnostic test, I told her They Asked $200 for diagnostic test. I went there they said it's not the transmission it's the MAF need to be reprogrammed, and I pay $370 for that, problem came again next day, I call Nissan they asked me to do the diagnostic test again and pay another $200 I agreed, in the end they told me Transmission need to be replaced, Nissan Company called me and she said because you have high mileage we will not be able to assist you, I told her you know my mileage from the beginning why you asked me to went to the dealer for the test and pay $370 and $200 and $288. and you already had the decision in advanced? I recommend every body don't buy Nissan their car is piece of Junk. They work with dealer to make money from you don't buy their car it's not reliable

It will be cheaper to fix it currently than purchase a new vehicle, I will be trying a KIA or a Sonata next time, no more Nissan's for me

Not sure about the Rogue, but on the Murano you have to drop the engine/CVT with the subframe. So, you'd need a lift for that.

Certain dealers get lazy and do not want to have to keep training people in the specialized repair of transmissions -- they can have any tech R&R a unit and if anything is wrong with the "new" unit then just slap another one in until they get a good unit. These transmissions are absolutely rebuildable -- we have been working on these JATCO CVTs for years. Parts are available from our suppliers. Just because the dealer does not sell individual parts does not mean they are not available from very reputable aftermarket part vendors. We have rebuilt 100's of these units and never had a unit fail after we have repaired them using parts from our suppliers.

If you do replace the transmission yourself, take it to nissan afterward to get the eeprom reset, only nissan consult 3 can reset the learning values. We are required always with valve body replacement or trans replacement to reset them.

The Jatco CVT strikes down another one. My wife's 09 Altima has been outrageously reliable but with 150k on the clock I know she was on borrowed time with the transmission. I just got her in to a new car a couple weeks ago and I'll drive the Nissan until that trans takes a dump and maybe fix it. I work at a Suzuki dealer and I just put a new jatco built CVT in a kizashi yesterday. Suzuki suffers the same issues.

Have a 2000 Ford EXpedition with 215 thous. miles that did leave me stranded b/c of trans. going bad. Overhaul on it was 900 bucks plus new torque converter 125 dllrs. Runs like a champ now.

I have four daughters...One is 22, and another is 16. Both of them are driving now and they are both driving manual transmission cars. They both like them. They didn't at first but now that they're used to them they like 'em. The third daughter gets a permit next week. I plan on teaching the other two how to drive manuals, too. Someday they may buy their own cars that are autos, and that's fine, but at least they'll always be able to hop into anything and drive it comfortably. I see complaints about the CVT's but 186K isn't too bad for any automatic transmission. It's definitely not premature failure. It's always bad timing, and unexpected large expenses always suck, but 186K on the trans isn't that bad really.

Same thing happen to our 2015 Nissan Sentra w/CVT transmission. It is a commuter so too many miles, therefore, out of warranty. According to local mechanics and specialized transmission shops this one is not rebuildable. Good thing I found a used transmission. Never again will i buy a car with a CVT trani I'm sticking with a manual transmission.

Ivan I have the same problem only difference is it's when I travel to visit my family cars usually break or are already broken when i arrive or when I head back home. As far as the CVT goes at least you made it to 186,000 the way Scotty Kilmer describes them they normally don't last that long. People say the CVT break with out warning I always thought it was a joke but seeing your wife's did that I'm now a believer. I hope you do film the R&R and tear down if you have the time. I Like Nissan in general but their CVT transmissions are notorious for problems. I would never think of pulling one from a junked car. Buy a new one and it "should" outlast the time you have the vehicle.

A Nissan P0720 fault code is usually caused by a faulty revolution/vehicle speed sensor.It is not uncommon also to encounter a faulty MAP/Baro sensor intermittently causing a similar problem.

You know I'm sure i remember a client telling me his hybrid RAV4 broke down and got towed because the CVT failed and Toyota replaced it under warranty and the dealer told him to buy the CVT for cash at the current time would have cost him £11,000. To be honest Ivan i think you're pretty lucky it lasted this long. They are pretty weak peices of technology. I have driven an 06 Honda Jazz CVT and a 17 plate Honda Jazz CVT. The first one still had a cable operated throttle and the ZF CVT and it was kind of weird but it was pretty smooth, not all that responsive but good MPG. The latest ones are awful. Even if you snap the accelerator you can't get much response out of them. Although a 1.4 petrol which can get better MPG than a lot of diesels is pretty impressive. I would never own one. Most of the ones i know about are low mileage. No more than 80,000 miles. I would be interested if you would kick the camera on at anything out of the ordinary during the process if you do replace it. I have never changed a CVT before. I have only pulled manual boxes. My guess is these Rogues are similar in design to the Quashqai and Jukes and i know there are quite a few of them knocking about with CVT's.

The CVT was invented by Mr. Huub Van Doorne(a Dutchman). First he invented in 1958 the Variomatic with rubberbands. The "pushband" form the prototype is still in a "safe" and had run for more than 650.000 miles whithout any problems. Though they need special care, use the correct oil and follow the mainenance prescibed. This might have been mentioned but there is a mechanical line pressure gizmo in there that is aluminum on aluminum. I've read that there are third party upgrade parts for this. This does require cracking open the CVT though to get to it but its cheaper than a new transmission.

Friends _had_ a Dodge Caliber with one of these CVT transmissions. The CVT was replaced under warranty THREE times before the car reached 60,000 miles. Symptoms would be the same each time. During normal driving, an orange light related to the CVT in the instrument cluster, loss of power, and then a red light related to the CVT in the instrument cluster. Towed to the dealer... needs a replacement CVT. Car was sold for next to nothing as soon as it was out of warranty. Too many people already know about the problems and $$$ involved with CVTs. I know someone else who had a Nissan Murano, and same situation, nothing but expensive problems. *STEER CLEAR OF CVTs* unless you have a deep wallet for after they are out of the warranty period.

Did the fluid smell burnt? Yank out the trans and then see if you can take it apart to find the culprit.

I enjoy your videos, but this one was making me crazy. Whenever I have had a transmission issue like this one, there was always transmission fluid all over the place and the transmission was either empty or nearly so. When you got under the car, everything looked dry and in the very last minutes of the video you finally show the fluid level. I have never owned a CVT automatic but am not crazy about the technology, especially in a larger vehicle. Your data is saying there is no pressure, indicating a pump failure or a major seal given that the fluid is OK. Keep up the good work, but you might want to do more visual inspection before digging into the scanner. If possible, could you show what is wrong with the transmission in a future video?

186k isn't too bad for any automatic. And I looked up book on a 2010 Rogue with 186k and its around $2k to $2500 retail and $1400 trade in. So a new tranny isn't a no brainier to me. You also had the passenger seat sensor failure and Nissan wanted you to buy a whole new seat. What's next? It could turn into a money pit with that many miles so I'd probably sell it as and get something with way lower miles. It's unfortunate they don't sell cut parts but aftermarket does? I wonder if the chain broke?

we have an altima with cvt and it makes me nervous....tried talking my girlfriend out of it explaining these transmissions are expensive and most rebuild guys do not even bother...just hit 100k and keeping my fingers crossed.

When that happened in my time the first thing I would do is check the oil level while the engine is running if the oil is high turn engine off check the oil again no change pump is broken

I've got 300,000 on 2 liter Sentra with a planetary automatic and LSD. Not a single problem out of it ever. All of the problems with the new CVT has me seriously looking at staying with traditional planetary transmissions.

Actually all things considered you did pretty well to get that many miles out of it . I would guess , the vast majority of any automatic transmission cars never see that many miles before they need work . Also the price for a brand new one is only about 2500 , that is DAMN cheap for an automatic transmission that will go almost 200,000 miles . Personally since I've worked on CVT's and have seen the insides of that exact transmission , I don't know how they sell them that cheap . TheReaper!

Hmm ... "signal from primary pressure sensor should be about 0,7 to 1,2 v. If not OK perform line pressure test". Signal is out of range (0,1 -0,16v ?). I know, I know! Without pressure there is no voltage. But the broken sensor will also not show the pressure. Still unsure whether the problem is a defective sensor or a lack of pressure. Probably a defective pump (or anything inside the gearbox), but until the sensor has given the incorrect voltage to the TCM the transmission will not work (even with the pressure).

Sorry for this happened to you, the transmission break on your Nissan. Maybe you will find a way to fix it, with aftermarket parts. ***I also have a car with automatic transmission, not cvt, and I try to take care of it as much as I can, to prevent this kind of problems. I need to check the ATF level, but as the transmission is the so called sealed, to do this I have to unplug the level plug, with engine running and transmission in P. THE PROBLEM IS that, for this procedure, the ATF temperature must be a specific one. I searched the entire internet, but I was unable to find what that temperature must be. I hope that you will be able to help me, as you have acces to service information. My car is Opel / Vauxhall Corsa E, 2015, 1.4 gasoline, with 6 speed automatic hydraulic transmission. That sucks. Those situations when you are fully capable of working on something only to find out the manufacture cock blocks it, and the aftermarket has not gone for the reach around. I suppose that would cost the average owner close to 5k by the time labor etc is added. I'm pretty ticked and it's not even mine to deal with.

I worked at a Nissan dealer for 5 years. We replaced those CVTs constantly. Pull the pan off the transmission I guarantee its full of metal shavings, chunks, and usually peices of the broken belt. Common failure. Get a low miles used unit if possible. They are fairly easy to replace as far as transmissions go.

The problem based on research is insufficient cooling. I seen people install universal trans coolers and bypass the original cooler. If it gets too hot, it will slip and have to cool down

u can do a line pressure check but that code we just put a new cvt in and add transcooler cvt a or b count might be high which I don't know if that scanner can show you depends on the count you can do a valve body or if it's too high rec cvt

I have Nissan Rogue 13. After 100000 mls, happens lost power once in a year, especially on the stops after running about an hour, but not completely lost power. When happens like this I pull over on the road side, stop engine about five minits I start again, it runs as normal. I change transmission oil and filter. It’s good

flow control valve might be sticking its located in the pump. there bad to wear with high mileage it will cause no line pressure. i'm thinking more on a pully went bad leaking all the pressure that trans can be built there parts available not thru nissan tho

First I want to say thank you for taking the time for making these videos I recently purchased a 2011 Nissan Altima and was able to repair the transmission thanks to your videos. With that I purchased a 2012 Nissan Rogue and felt that it was just the filters but just to be on the safe side I went ahead and tore the transmission apart just to make sure the in Drive was okay got it back together shift forward just fine but there's no reverse now I would greatly appreciate your Insight on what I might have done wrong as I've torn apart the transmission twice

No reverse implies that there's no fluid flow to the reverse clutch. Check the solenoid for the reverse clutch or the seals related to it.

Actually it was just a rubber seal that went between the cylinoids and the pump. Guy over at whatever it takes transmission was correct! And these transmissions are great! Only real problem is it has 2 filters. 2nd filter is rather hidden, thus its rarely changed, thus creating more pressure thus creating problems

There you have it, folks. Don't buy a Nissan with a CVT. The rest of it is a pretty good car; but unless you can do your own work, expect to add $1000+ for 8.6 hours of labor, plus shop markup, "shop supplies", taxes, etc. The car's totaled all because they had to be different and put a special transmission in it. This is not an isolated incident. These transmissions have systemic problems. I'm honestly surprised it made it this long. Most don't even make it 100k. Nissans are vehicles to lease new, but never to buy used.

Not likely - the fluid in CVTs does not get contaminated like they do in "regular" automatic transmissions with friction material from clutch packs and bands

Damn Ivan... That's a bad one. I've never really liked CVT's, but that's mostly because I hate driving them. What's the blue book value on this car? If it's high enough, install a used unit and sell it off before it fails or trade it for a RAV4 with a trans good for 400k+. ;) Sorry, I had to toss that one in. Haha Nissan hasn't been the same since Ghosn. He ended their glory days of the 90's in an aggressive attempt to lower their debt and return them to profitability. And he did, perhaps too well. Those cuts had to come from somewhere. :/ Either way, 186k is a good run, I suppose. I mean yes there are other cars that would do that and much more no problem. But, if she liked the car and it was trouble free until now, it's not so bad. You make a point on the fuel savings. However, since her miles are mostly highway, perhaps a CVT isn't that advantageous here? So I'll suggest it again: RAV4 slushbox. ;) Under your care, that sumbitch will run forever. Keep us posted on how you get on with this one. We're all curious as to the direction you take with this one and it would be good advice for the next guy that is facing this issue.

There are 2 special pressure adapters needed to test the pressures on JATCO CVTs. Either buy the special adapters (either directly from OTC / Miller Tools or try eBay) or scavenge pressure port plugs out of a junk JATCO CVT & modify them by drilling & tapping the center of the plugs to fit threads of common pressure testers. Modifying and reusing the plugs in the original trans is subject to your own level of confidence (successfully modifying them and then plugging them so they do not leak after you are done testing - remember these CVTs easily create over 1000psi) , knowing if you mess them up then you have no choice but to get replacements off another JATCO CVT.

may be worth a try to check pump pressure at the cooler line with a gauge. i looked at rockauto to see if any parts their very little no valvebody or pump. I would pull the pan and see if something has stopped up the pickup screen before i pull the trans out. there was a rebuild kit on rockauto for $200 but I not sure what It includes.

Great video, sorry for the trans failure. I come from a different world I guess, 100,000 miles left on the fluid life??? I have always replaced trans fluid and filter between 25-30k, never had sludge, burnt fluid, pressure issues, a few solenoid and switch problems. The fluid has no magic properties, tremendous heat, heating and cooling cycles, stop n go traffic, if you tow the fluid gets bad faster. I enjoyed the video I'm just surprised that some knucklehead thought the fluid would last forever, then why replace the engine oil? Shouldn't it last also? I know I'm old LOL, I always overmaintain my vehicles but it works! Looking forward to the conclusion.

The fluid in CVTs does not get contaminated like they do in "regular" automatic transmissions with friction material from clutch packs and bands. CVT trans fluid wears out due to heat & contamination from liquids (i.e. water or coolant) - which is why the recommended fluid replacement intervals are so much longer than for "regular" transmissions.

Makes me crazy that you don't pop the hood and check fluids first. First step is always a visual inspection, we would run new mechanics that didn't do this out of the shop back at the dealerships. Go for the codes first, I guess when you have a hammer every problem becomes a nail. I am not saying never check codes, but look under the hood first.
