Nissan Frontier Tailgate Handle Replacement

This video saved me $150 from the con-shop down the road. This cost me $27 bucks, 15 minutes of my cheap labor and a beer. Just a heads up I did the install and the latch wouldn't catch at first. Thought my tailgate or rods may have been too bent up. Went back and re-watched, turns out the connector plate for the rods was turned upside down (for some reason), tweaked it and now it pops perfectly even for my beat up tailgate. You are the man

At 5:42 that’s where I figured out my issue! The nut on the far right was tightened too far and wouldn’t allow the J-plate underneath it to slide left so the handle could push on the rotating plate with the rods attached. Effectively it was stuck in the locked position (as shown). Thanks for letting me see how it worked!

Mine doesn't have the Emblem piece --instead had name "Nissan" embossed, so if part comes needing one will have to order one. Also, I had the Bed Extender locked in place and wondered if that would be a challenge. Turned out, my tailgate cover tabs were also broke off. Funny, I bought the truck Brand New and had never messed with the bedliner before ;)

I just did this on my 2004 Frontier XE crewcab. My tailgate was closed also. Take the two rod clips off and take the rods out of there holes. Then pull them towards the center to release tailgate.

Once I took it off, it really wasn’t broken. The one lever somehow was stuck over the other one. I did replace it anyway because all the tabs broke when pulling black piece off.

Yes, it it always happen at the worst time when you actually need to open your tailgate to load. One person I know had a heavy couch-bed loaded crammed in and the handle broke.

The little plastic clips are called angel wing clips and they have a left and right. Just in case you break one.

At 5:25...the screw that holds the lock in just spins and won't come out. Help!

Hello, glad it’s the one that’s supposed to come out and it’s not stripped putting it back in. Try wedging a screwdriver, putty knife, butter knife, ect. Right between the screw. Pry up on the screw lightly with some pressure while unscrewing the screw. That had to be aggravating. Please let me know if that helped. Make sure you don’t over torque it putting it in your new handle. I wish KZbin would let us exchange pictures. Take care and don’t take a baseball bat to it yet. Sometimes cussing it works too. lol

I have a broken handle and ordered the part however, I have a hard cover that cannot open because I have to have access to the bed but can't because the tailgate will not open. Can the cover be removed from the outside to gain access to the inside of the bed and access panel?

Not anyway I know of. You might have to break into it somehow from the outside since you have noway to get to the inside. I would think if your careful and break away from behind the handle so you can grab the bar and pull it to open. But I really can't help you there brother. I would try it with mine cause I would be getting a new one anyway. But I don't want to give you any advice that would tear it up worse and damage your truck. Good luck Brother...Tony

Thanks, I found out that I can pull it apart and the tabs will break but I can gain acess then turn the bar to open the tailgate, just have to wait until a warmer day. When I do it I'll video if it works...again thanks

If you go ta a junk yard to get the handle piece. The metal rod and spring is held in place by a clip.

I don't think there is an older Frontier with original tailgate handle. My plastic handle failed when the bed was fully loaded with heavy items.

because of this tutorial I tried to pull the panel off and broke it in half. it would have been a much better idea to show a proper way of removing it. this is $35 down the drain.

A couple of tips if someone hasn't beaten me to it: First, if the tailgate is shut with the handle broken, you can open it by finding where the latch bolt enters the hole on the body and inserting a thin piece of metal to move the latch bolt. From inside the bed. It is essentially the same as an old style doorknob that could be opened with a pocketknife or credit card. It has to be done on both sides at the same time so one side may have to be taped in place to reach the other side or a have another person to help. Or you could just have extremely long arms. Second, once you have it open, cut a couple of narrow strips of aluminum flashing and wrap around those holes on the sides where the latch enters. It will let you raise and lower the tailgate without it latching. Its just not secure so expect that it could fall. Then remove after the repair is done.
