I discuss how to check the level of your coolant on your Nissan Frontier and Xterra. This can apply to other vehicles as well but there I provide some specific details gear toward the Nissan. If you are having gurgling sounds under the riders dash or experiencing no heat at a stop or start then your coolant level is too low. Filling up your coolant to the proper level is easy. I recommend using the manufactures recommendation of coolant when refilling. This fix applies to the 4.0 L and the 3.8 L Nissan engines. On most new model vehicles the manufacture will use 100k mile coolant so that is why I recommend sticking with OEM. This fix will take you all of 5 minutes but you will want to make sure you keeping checking the level of the coolant and filling it up to the max line or no more than 1in above (this recommendation is only for the Nissan Frontier/Xterra but all other information can apply to other makes and models).

I have a 2015 Crew cab SV. Purchased June 2015. The day after I picked it up and the engine was cool I checked the radiator. The fluid was below the top of the fins. I went to the service center inquiring and was told, as you stated these trucks have the closed loop system. We looked at another new truck and the fluid was at the same level as was mine. this week my heater wouldn't work while idling. Did a few searches and found several posts and videos on this topic. Including your other video. I tried the suggestions regarding raising the front end up to remove air from my heater core but that did not work. I then purchased the correct coolant added it to the tank above the max line as you've stated. So far I have heat while the truck is idling on level ground. I did this yesterday likely while you were posting this video. I'm sure others will find this helpful, thank you.

If you are doing a full drain and fill then its faster to remove the air any of the traditional ways. However, if you hear gurgling or no heat at a stop you just need to add coolant to the max line or 1 in above max line. As i said in the video i think the labels are too low on the resivour. Also there is no need to open the cap at the radiator. I'm glad to hear your sides as it seems very problematic with this setup

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. I think most folks are used to an open coolant system in which you check and fill at the radiator. Also as stated in the video I believe the Full and Low markings are too low and Ned to be free raised as filling between those lines, which is a standard practice doesn't fill the coolant system far enough causing gurgling and no heat.

@autoxadvice4159
@autoxadvice4159 Жыл бұрын
For the milkshake issue all that has been fixed in the new radiators. I don't recommend bypassing radiator and just have external especially if you are in colder region. All new radiators should work good for you. Your 2015 should be just fine. I recommend all OEM parts for chains guides. The new guides are good and these engines are getting 200k miles. Some issues do pop-up but all OEM as you know how long you will be getting (guides, chains, water pump, thermostats, ...). The only item that I've found not to buy OEM is the rear axle breather, do replace that one.

Can the pressure cap be used on the radiator if you manage to break the overflow port on the radiator cap? I broke mine when doing a radiator flush. I don't know if supergluing the piece back on would withstand the pressures. I plan to replace the radiator when the weather gets better.
@autoxadvice4159
@autoxadvice4159 Жыл бұрын
No. Pressure cap needs to go into the reservoir else it's like having no relief valve. Your vehicle will overheat as there is no where for the pressure to escape. You will not be able to super glue it back on as there will be too much heat and pressure for that to stay affixed. You will need to get a new radiator.
@genericdude6551

@@autoxadvice4159 I was under the impression that the pressure cap is suppose to release pressure when things got too hot. Isn't that what happens in the overflow tank? I have a pressure cap on my 02 Mustang but it fits directly on the radiator.
@autoxadvice4159
@autoxadvice4159 Жыл бұрын
Yes pressure cap is suppose to release pressure to the outside. The 2nd gen Nissan has a closed coolant system which includes the reservoir. On older cars it's and open system where the reservoir isn't included and it's open to the air. So the pressure cap needs to stay on the reservoir on the the 2nd gen. My 1st Gen had the older open system.

First make sure the pressure cap is on the reservoir and the regular cap is on the radiator. Then fill to the full line or 1in above. Drive it around till it gets hot and just to make sure it cycles the thermostat. Park it, let it cool and make sure it stays at full line. If all your parts are working correctly It should make the gurgling go away and you will have good heat.

I was at full then I added an inch cuz I had this problem. Now heater just blows ambient air temp all the time. So this made it worse. Or it could be something else. I used Nissan blue 50/50. Edit: I'm gonna try cold cranking it, waiting 20 seconds for it to pull and stabilize the reservoir then go 1" over.
@autoxadvice4159
@autoxadvice4159 2 жыл бұрын
Adding coolant will not make it worse. Let's step back and make sure you have the spring cap on the reservoir and not the radiator. If that checks out then can I assume that after you filled it above the full line you have taken it for a ride. Also, make sure the heat is turned to max as that will help purge any air in the line. Lastly, when you bring it back set it on a level surface and check the coolant level again (don't open the reservoir when it is hot).

I can only assume your Pathfinder has blue coolant in it. If it is get a similar brand for Asian cars & trucks. Make sure it's a quality brand that will give you 160k or 100k miles coverage. Also, look at your owners manual as well sometimes they provide details on what coolant is acceptable. As stated I don't mix colors and follow manufacturer recommendations. Also, Nissan doesn't make their coolant and it's bought by one of the larger coolant manufacturers. Similar to Nissan branded oils, belts, etc.

@autoxadvice4159
@autoxadvice4159 7 ай бұрын
If you add distilled water you dilute the coolant properties. If it's just to top off the coolant reservoir then adding a bit isn't going to hurt. If you add too much water your coolant will not be able to reach lower temperatures and your engine coolant system will start to corrode. Hope that helps. What country are you located in?

Since so many people are trained to fill between the lines it's just too low on the Frontier.

I found that i was low on coolant and have been adding some slowly every time the engine is cold til it seems to stay at the max line. I hope I understand this correctly. Your engine coolant is for keeping the engine from overheating and that's its main purpose. When you turn on the heater you are using that heated coolant to heat the interior of the vehicle. Adding coolant to the required level is what will keep the engine running optimally and not overheat. The AC is a totally separated system that the only real connection to the engine is the AC clutch that is ran off the engine belt (fan belt). If you are wanting cold AC air and only getting cold air during driving. I'd suspect you could be low on refrigerant or have leak and it's low on refrigerant. Though important to continue to get enough coolant in the engine and as in the meaning of the Frontier is to keep it at Max or 1in above, but it's not going to fix your AC cooling in the summer. Again, I hope I understood your question and answered it appropriately.

Thanks, I appreciate you responding! I read on some xterra forums that checking coolant first would be a good way to start as the price of coolant vs a can of refrigerant with the gage and hose is considerably cheaper. With the oil extractor I reviewed, it's less messy I just let the air compressor and extractor suck out the oil for 20 min and I go do something else. Then return to very little oil to drain from the pan and change the filter.

Hey there, so question about the caps… only the resevoir has a springloaded cap or does the radiator need a springloaded as well?

Thanks for answering. I tried burping my 08 xterra a couple days ago because of no heat on idle, and I ended mixing up the caps not knowing anything about which cap goes where. I placed the caps on wrong and ended with my coolant getting spilled out the resevoir. I was thinking I messed something up. Fixed the caps but my temperature needle seems to have some play. Any idea what it might be??

Your temp gauge should stay below 1/2 way at gauge. The movement of the gauge could be a failing thermostat, have you had it changed recently? If you had a plug in the system the temp would continue to rise so my thought is if you are seeing fluctuation the thermostat is eventually opening.

When was the last time you replaced your cabin filters? That is the first area I'd check. If they isn't it then you will need to take it in as there could multiple causes, but first they would check the high pressure and low pressure while the truck is running.

The other item to check is to make sure the ventilation doors are working. For instance if you set them to allow outside air into the cabin with the AC off are are they opening as they should. Then if you click on the AC do the doors close. Under the driver's side you can see the controls operate for all settings. Over on the passenger side you can hear the opening and closing of the inside/outside ventilation door.

I bought a 2015 nissan fronteir sv and it's got 90k milage on it. I had it a week and had no heat while driving and I could smell antifreeze, so I parked it and put antifreeze in it. I drove it back home from work and it overheated on me. So I changed the thermostat on it but it still gets hot. I took it to a mechanic and he changed the alternator on it and said it was fixed. It costs me 700 bucks for the matinence on it, I madrove it half a mile and it overheated. Now it's been sitting for a year and it's costing me 430 bucks a month because I still owe 14k on it. Idk what to do besides take it to nissan and ask them if they can fix it. The truck is sharp, but its not drivable.
@autoxadvice4159

What you should have your mechanic check is the interior head gaskets for a leak in the valley. Have them use a borescope and not take anything apart. I just recently found a leak on mine and "it" could be the cause on yours. Mine doesn't overheat, and I haven't found coolant in the oil and no drops on the ground. I talked to a Nissan mechanic and they claim the cause is from factory not torqueing the bolts tight enough. If you find no leak then no expensive head fix, but if a leak is found then you can move to the next steps of deciding to fix the head. Did you use a Nissan thermostat? If not then I would consider replacing it with OEM but first check on that leak in the valley. I have no idea why your mechanic changed your alternator that makes no sense. I think I may find another mechanic.

Why is it that cold temps result in a drop in coolant levels? TY
@autoxadvice4159
@autoxadvice4159 8 ай бұрын
That shouldn't be the case. There really isn't any expanding and contraction in which cold weather would cause a drop. As long as you keep it filled to the full line and or above by 1in you should be good. Of course if you have a slow leak that's a different story. Do check for a leak at the bottom of the inlet on the reservoir or any crusty buildup or liquid under the battery. I had a small leak at the inlet of the reservoir. Also make sure your spring cap is on the reservoir and not the radiator.

What year is your truck? ReasonI ask I have been taking to a Nissan mechanic about this issue of low coolant. He informed me that probably more than people realize that their head gasket is leaking due to back bolts not being tightened enough at the time of assembly. Drivers side. Mine is a 2012 and sure as he said I've noticed there is dry crusted coolant in my serves side inside the valley. Now I don't notice any overheating, no coolant mix, no loss of power and no loss of mpg. With that said it's one thing to check is using a scope or removing the intake to check. To answer your question, keep observing when the engine is cold. Fill as needed and hopefully it stabilizes and you aren't losing it like I mentioned above.

Which antifreeze should I put in Nissan Xterra 2013 Pro 4x? 11 or G 12
@autoxadvice4159
@autoxadvice4159 7 ай бұрын
My preference is not to mix coolant. For example, don't mix GM Dexcool with Asian. If you are doing a flush go with 50/50 Asian blue (g11), as that is what came from Nissan. If you are topping it off go with whatever is in there. If you have no idea what's in there I'd get a sample and check the color. Personally, I used Nissan 50/50 blue.

Thanks for the timely reply. At the moment there is only water in my car. In my country I was advised that I would use a G12 because the Xterra block is aluminum and for this type of engine the 2013 Xterra requires a G12, not a G11. But I don't know which fluid is recommended by the Nissan company (I didn't know that 50 50 was G11) If you advise me that G11 is necessary, I will take your advice.

How much fluid are you losing? With pressurized system you will lose some through steam when the spring cap opens. However if you aren't getting coolant build up by the reservoir or dropping on the ground then you aren't losing enough to blink at.
